I started restoring pipes in the barracks when I was in the navy, I accidentally got in a bid war on ebay and wound up winning a lot of 40+ pipes that needed work, so I'd clean them up and trade them and give them away at the smoke pit to friends that wanted to learn to smoke pipe, the worst was always the first smoke on a freshly restored pipe, always had that musty ashy old tabacco flavor.

The late Herbert Bessai had a recipe for a bowl coating that used a neutral sugar solution which was used to adhere non-aromatic tobacco dust/ The smoker then loosely fills the bowl for the first five bowls, smoking it slowly. This starts the cake inside the bowl. The the bowl is lightly reamed out to a thickness of a dime. I had my pipes treated this way, and the reults were excellent.

Couple of questions regarding stem work. Can you soak a vulcanite stem "too long" in Oxyclean? Do you sand the stem by hand or have a wheel? Assume when buffing stem out you have a polishing wheel? Best way to reduce oxidation on the stem? One of the things I do after smoking is use a fluffy pipe cleaner and do a firm scrubbing around the nip and portion of the stem touched with my mouth/lips. Also, I have a couple of new pipes where the stem does not fit flush with the shank. I am very careful about removing the stem and ensure it is not "hot". Suggestions on how to get the stem fitting flush? Great job on the Orlik Captain. Wish you could have shown more of your technique for cleaning, sanding and buffing out the stem.

The Great Explorers Collection: Tom CREAN 🇮🇪🍀🇬🇧 Most photos you see of Crean show him smoking a dublin, sometimes with and sometimes without a band. If he bought his briars in Ireland (and why would he not?), then what he’s clenching between his teeth must be a Peterson. Perspective can be difficult in photographs, but we do know K&P made 3 dublin shapes during this period: the 120 (still in production) and the smaller 121 and 122. The Great Explorers homage is the largest production dublin shape Peterson has ever made, a fitting homage to the man. DUBLIN FILTER 120, PETERSON-LIP The 120 is arguably one of the most recognisable Peterson bowl shapes and one that’s been in existence for over a century. With a thick shank and generous bowl, the 120 has remained ever popular in our collection. Finished here in a semi-matt brown and with an added nickel band. As the name suggests, this pipes comes with a nine millimetre filter and a black acrylic Peterson-Lip mouthpiece.
