Many years ago I worked in a TV recording studio. We contracted out our staff, equipment and editing services to ad agencies etc. One company we worked with trained business people and politicians in media speak, interview techniques and how to communicate with media. It's a very complex thing to learn, and even today I can watch interviews of politicians & business folk and can tell who has been trained and who hasn't. One of the most important part of the training was to teach how to never give a 'yes' or 'no' answer...

At 21:00 looks like RCC. It doesn't have any slump to it. Looks like they're using portable compactors to compact it. The RCC is being used like crushed gravel to fill the void. Crushed gravel will settle over time and that is a disaster for a spillway. RCC will be a solid block that won't settle. Looks like they've cut across the top and bottom of where they're going to build new, so it looks like the diffuser blocks stay Thanks Juan...........PS Is that the "new look" ?

Hi Juan. Thanks a lot for all this great job. We have seen your videos and 'updates', you have show an objective view of this interesting natural-man made event. The images, comments, questions, answers are very valuable information that allow us to understand the magnitud of the risk and the almost heroic efforts of many workers and technitians bringning under control the river, keeping the dam and structures safe enough during the critical moments. Oroville is a great project that has brough many benefits to the whole region. After 50 years of service and technological development, it will be again a defining moment for keeping safe and in working conditions our hydraulic infrastructure. American engineers will come again with creative solutions for today challenges.We are watching them through your videos and the DWR releases. We acknowledge all the hard work and we believe this is the way to make America great again! Thanks for all your coverage. Javier

Awesome video, great information. Kiewit Co. is "known as a class act" in the construction industry, I'm glad to see them receive the reconstruction contract......and they are fast and the 'behind the scenes engineers/managers' are experts! Now, if ALL of the other KZitem channels and other news media covering this disaster/reconstruction would just put up positive comments as you have (rather than negative/disrespectful commentary) the area's population would have something to be grateful for as well as being proud of everyone working at their fast pace to make the project come together! Thanks for the flyover and the update! ....13 P.S. To everyone reading this; if you can't say something good/positive about the project, say nothing! Help the Oroville and California citizens recover! Btw, I've never met nor know a person that has/is working for Kiewit, I've just seen them do great quality, fast paced work.

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC)- At 21:00 you show a video of normal concrete being pumped into a somewhat remote site. Normal concrete has the consistency of liquid mud, called mud by the men that work in it, and can be pumped into difficult to reach areas because it is so liquid. As the mud is pumped in, men with large vibrators move the mud around to even the pour. RCC is a very dry mix, different from normal concrete as it looks like damp sand and gravel rather than mud. Dump Trucks pick up the RCC at the Batch Plant and haul it to the site and dump it. A Road Grader evens out the RCC and a very large Roller Compactor compacts it into about 6in layers. RCC is relatively low strength concrete, but good for this project's foundation. Normally RCC is used in large, easy to get to projects, such as river embankments, which results in a 9 ft. wide concrete river bank extending for miles. This is economical in the US as very little, very expensive Union hand labor is needed. and the embankment is so large it could last for thousands of years, with very little maintenance. Oroville Dam Spillway reconstruction is not a large, or easy to work to site, typical of RCC projects, but this is a quasi-emergency so some of the normal rules are no doubt modified. Probably a good decision.

Hi Juan! You said in the video that DWR wants to keep the water level around 800 feet level. Last year the water level dropped from 890 feet in May to 725 in December. I think that they should try to release as much water as possible in order to keep a larger security margin, in case they run out of time during the reconstruction of the spillway. By the way, your videos are the best by far talking about Oroville! Fantastic job!

Awesome work Juan. I watch the live feed, and the DWR videos, but none give as good an overall view as your flyby. Now I can see where that ramp goes. This has to be one of the greatest engineering and construction feats of all time. Those excavator operators are masters - I watched one fight with a wall at the bottom, finally pulled on it hard enough that it exploded when it failed. It would be cool to get an interview with one of the drill operators and an explanation of how those machines work, they seem to leave a clean hole. Thanks for keeping us up-to date!

@TheUserid82

What they used in the video was normal concrete as it was way to wet for RCC and it would be hard to get a compactor into that hole that could do more then an inch lift at a time. They will have a cure time chart to say when they can do the next lift for it to be cured enough to support the weight but fresh enough for the lifts to bond. A fun question for the next Q&A call would be how long the mass of concrete they are building to fill the canyon will be hot from the chemical reaction and how hot will it get.

Juan at 15:55 the layout of the plant is as follows: The crushing and cement plants are together on the middle large pad. The rock crushing starts at the top right and proceeds down and across to the cement plant that has the vertical silos. There is 1 central cone crusher that feeds two primary screeds that continue to more screens and washers until they reach the two radial stackers, in the middle between the two plants will be the stockpiles of rocks.

The traffic/safety pole laying down between the "u pick up, yard art" blocks at 22:10 suddenly changed the metal image of scale I had quite radically.
