Orpen Rest Camp Walkthrough, Accommodation Video & The Common Wildlife In Orpen Camp
Orpen Rest Camp is so underrated for me personally, it is probably my favourite of the smaller rest camps in the Kruger National Park. It is situated in a superb game viewing area that incorporates 3 prides of African Lion, where their territories all overlap. This often includes rare white Lion adults and cubs that occur in the Timbavati and Klaserie that often find themselves in the region. White Lions in the Kruger National Park are extremely rare, and this area, towards Satara and Timbavati Picnic Spot, are hands down the best places in the Kruger National Park to see white Lions.
Orpen is a stunning rest camp, full of wildlife. We were lucky to come across a rare bird for the Kruger National Park on this specific trip, the Pied Crow. They are not often encountered in the Kruger, and there have only been a handful of sightings of this opportunistic bird species over the years. I personally have only heard about 3 sightings before we saw this beautiful specimen.
There are a lot of Lizards in Orpen rest camp, and there are also a number of Smith's Bush Squirrels (Southern Tree Squirrel). Bushbuck and Common Duiker also are resident, as well as Genet and the ever-present Honey Badger; we were visited by a mother and sub-adult as they tried to raid our bin on our last night. They are truly fearless!
The waterhole offers many opportunities for game viewing. It can be seen from most of the chalets in the camp, but there are benches along the perimeter fence, and you can count on seeing Elephants in the afternoon. Impala, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebra are also common, and if you are lucky the resident pack of Wild Dogs might come and have a drink.
Orpen rest camp is close to 2 satellite camps in Tamboti and Maroela. It is a beautiful area to make your base camp, no matter which spot you choose.
We stayed at unit 9 this trip, but I have also stayed at 7, 10 and 13 in the past. The swimming pool is delightful and very soothing after a long day in the Kruger National Park. You also have a very good view of the waterhole from the pool too.
Birdlife in the camp is prolific, and there are probably around 90-100 resident species in the summer months. Early morning wake ups will let you hear the various bird calls, but also excitedly, 9 times out of 10 Lions roaring and Hyenas whooping. If I have stayed at Orpen rest camp for 30 days, I have heard Lions on 25 mornings, let's put it that way. The sunrises in summer and winter are also spectacular.
"Orpen Rest Camp, nestled in the heart of Kruger National Park, is a tranquil haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Surrounded by the diverse ecosystems of the African bushveld, Orpen provides a comfortable retreat amidst the wilderness. Its strategic location offers easy access to prime game viewing areas, where visitors can encounter a plethora of iconic African species, from majestic elephants to elusive leopards. The camp itself boasts a range of accommodation options, from cozy bungalows to spacious family cottages, ensuring a restful stay for every traveler. With its serene atmosphere, scenic surroundings, and abundant wildlife, Orpen Rest Camp promises an authentic safari experience and an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Africa's most renowned national park."
