After the nightmare season we've had - we could use all the help we can get. But you could visit instead and go to the Tolga Bat Hospital in far north QLD and be a volunteer for a month. That's one way to get a bat fix without actually having to move to Australia. You work really hard - but it's very satisfying. Have you been to the Tolga Bat Hospital group facebook page? That's a really good site. Or you could subscribe to my channel if you aren't already - & see the Megabattie adventures.

Less than 1% of the bat population carries the virus, which, in Australia is ABLV - Australian Bat Lyssavirus. ABLV is a totally preventable disease - don't handle bats. If you come into contact with a bat, you can be vaccinated free of charge by the health dept. Bats fulfil a very specific eco niche - they're the biodispersal vectors of the rainforest. Without them we will lose our rain forests, which are the lungs of our world.

So question: Are these little fellas friendly and sweet in the sense that they display/initiate (what you can somewhat confidently gauge to be) outward signs of affection towards you? The first bat you stroked, the one who was biting a bit, made me wonder whether he/she was simply playing or if they were a little cross. Basically, I'm asking: Do they like their human caregivers and how do they show it?
@Megabattie
10 жыл бұрын
Baby bats think of their carers as their mums. They will preferentially choose their own "mum" from a group of carers around them. The cranky lad I was stroking - he was trying to sample me and chew on me - that's something they do. Their hands don't give them a lot of info on the environment, so they sample with their mouths as well. That's fairly common. They love their caregivers and pee on them whenever possible. They'd pee on their mums. Their mums would lick them clean - I draw the line at that, and use baby wipes. Their mums are a warm body and that relaxes little bladders. See the other vids in my orphan bat list for more of an idea. And go to Battie Blue Facebook page and LIKE to get up to date posts on what's happening. In October the babies will stream in and there will be LOTS of batty baby videos and posts

They also like to grab their carer mums as they pass their airer, and hang on them. And pee on them. Peeing on their carers features largely in the carers' lives for a few months. They like to hang on us while we're doing whatever we are doing in our lives, and climb into our hair and over our faces. Their claws are very sharp. Wearing a little batty baby is part of a carer's life for a few months of every year. Getting peed on is a daily event. Sometimes they fall asleep in our pocket with their feet protruding - we call the little feet battie brooches. There's a video I posted called There's a bat in my pocket. And of course, more on Battie Blue FB

1:22 Of course the baby bats pee on the books! They can't read, so what else are books good for? :D
@Megabattie

It's predictable but annoying. So I covered the shelves with plastic then polar fleece and they climbed on it and peed from on high. Pee goes much further when you're higher up, and splashes on the carpet.

Thanks Caroline, but I make all my own wraps and rolls - I use what the babies like. They like what I make. Sometimes I use teddies or plushies and they have some favourites, but I really don't like a lot of the synthetic fleeces and they get their claws stuck in it and they get sweaty and fungal. I have a bunch of stuff I've tried but I stick to the stuff they like and which doesn't make them all fungal, and their claws don't stick into.

These are Grey-Headed Flying-Foxes. They're not pets. They're wild animals and will be released into the wild when they're old enough. You can't keep native animals as pets in Australia

How do you tell them all apart?
@Megabattie
8 жыл бұрын
They're my babies. Of course I can tell them apart. I have had them since they were tiny. I know from their size, their sex, and because they're my babies so I can figure it out. When I have a whole heap of new babies I put them in individual wraps - the same colour all the time. That way I can keep track of them.

bat fishing! that's hilarious! could you please explain if you are having to get vaccinated just to do what you do, as many of your videos show you caring for the little bats, then mention that they are then moving on to a "vaccinated carer" ? thank you
@Megabattie
10 жыл бұрын
I'm vaccinated. To do any bat handling at all, you must be vaccinated. I say they're in care with a vaccinated carer, which is me. I move them along to another vaccinated carer usually around 8 weeks. They get pretty nocturnal then and they keep me awake all night climbing the bookshelves and flapping madly and drinking (little clicks from the ball bearing valve on the dripper) and peeing (they pee a lot and you hear it cascade onto the newspaper). So in sheer self preservation I move them along to someone who doesn't have to sleep with them next to their bed.
@inbetweentics

how often do you have to get vaccinated? is it one shot or more? in the arm? would you get fined or something if you didn't get the vaccine? as they keep you awake at night, is this your full time occupation? if so, are you funded so you may care for yourself (rent/food/vehicle etc)? thanks!

inbetweentics We get 3 rabies vaccinations over a month period. Day one, day 7 and day 28. Then in a month we get our blood levels done of the antibodies to see if we're immune. We get yearly titres (blood levels) to check our immunity and if the levels drop, we get boosters (free). The initial vaccinations cost about $300, but our group subsidises them. I'm a coordinator. All members must put their titres in yearly. If they don't, I don't let them rescue or handle or take any calls. Less than 0.5% of the bat population may carry ABLV, Australian Bat Lyssa Virus which is one of the rabies family of viruses. There have only been 3 recorded deaths in Australia from ABLV, the last was 12 months ago when a child was scratched by a bat and didn't tell anyone. His sister knew but they didn't know the dangers. His family has set up a trust to educate people about the dangers. They're not anti-bat (very sensible) so it's not a witch hunt.

i understand now. is it a shot in the arm?
@Megabattie

inbetweentics Sorry. Yes it is. It's not painful. Some people get a bit of a sore arm. Most people have no reaction at all. It's just something we do because we like to work with bats.
