Orthodontics is about changing the positions of teeth. Usually to get them straighter. Expanders change the size a shape of the jaws. Usually to get the jaws to be larger so all the teeth have more room to fit. Expanders also create more tongue space and improve nasal breathing.
Holistic Orthodontics is the use of orthodontic expanders and myofunctional therapy to create beautiful smiles, healthy breathing patterns and facial balance. Crooked teeth and cross bites are not in our DNA. Our teeth should be straight. Our jaw structures should be balanced and well developed. Tongues should fit perfectly into our mouths and palates. Our airways should be healthy. No pediatric sleep apnea, snoring or mouth breathing. The above are the goals of “holistic orthodontics.”
Holistic Expanders Used By Dr. Adams
In holistic orthodontics Dr Adams uses expanders he designs and the assistance of biological forces including tongue pressure, chewing forces and neutral bite positions to promote anterior facial growth. There is no one-size fits all appliance. Depending on the size and shape of your child’s face and jaw profile and they’re specific dental challenges, Dr. Adams will select and design the best appliance for the situation. We will ask that your child do three things:
Wear the removable appliance at night time
perform four easy tongue exercises 3x per day. It will take a total of 5 minutes
Meet appointments to see Dr. Adams every 4-6 weeks
Most treatments will take 6-12 months
Orthodontic Expanders Compared to Braces Video
More growth and development means more space for teeth to fit, be straight and balanced. The goal of holistic orthodontics is to create beautiful and balanced smiles as well as a healthier life and optimal breathing patterns. Optimal space in the mouth for tongue function and unobstructed breathing and airway is important. Critical to proper sleep and prevention of sleep apnea and teeth clenching during sleep. When orthodontic treatment is not completed properly the consequence is TMJ, sleep apnea and UARS. UARS stands for upper airway resistance syndrome. We love straight teeth, but cosmetics is not our only goal.
What Age should Kids get Braces and Expanders?
Braces and expanders should be done between the ages of 5 and 14. 80% of jaw and facial development occurs by the age of 12. Dr. Adams prefers to see kids between the ages of 5-6 to determine what they need. Some kids will need early palatal expansion and others may need nothing more than a tongue tie release.
