Thank you for this enlightening video. Perhaps you can clear up something I'm still confused about... if an Orthodox Christian keeps the Wednesday and Friday fasts as well as the longer fasts throughout the year and receives Holy Communion every Sunday, what foods are permitted on a regular Saturday that is not a designated fast day on the calendar? In my ignorance, I believed it was OK to eat non-vegan foods on Saturdays and still receive Holy Communion on Sunday. I mentioned this to an older woman and she was horrified. I won't be able to see my priest until next Sunday and I feel anxious about this so perhaps you can offer some information which may help other Orthodox Christians as well? Thank you Father. P.S. I generally avoid talking about fasting with other people because it seems that a lot of them follow their own rules. I just go by the calendar and try not to be a glutton as well.

Thank you for your question. If you fast regularly (just like you described in your question) there is no extra rules for you to follow! And, yes, you can eat regular food on Saturdays prior to receiving Holy Communion. Your conversation with the elderly woman uncovered nothing but the so-called “pious” tradition that by some Orthodox christians was elevated to the rank of a”rule”. However, it is still just a tradition. It means, it is up to you to follow it or not.

God bless you Cathy. You are doing your best, don't worry about what others think, especially if it makes you anxious. You are hardworking and God loves all

Is simply not eating on a fast day as good or is it not considered fasting?

It is considered fasting, yes. But not everyone is capable of doing that.

But what does the fast do? How does it balance? What’s it’s effect on the spirit? Is it just the time diversion you mention? Why is it meat and dairy? What is the origin? The 40 days?

The fast helps us to spend more time thinking about the needs of our souls. It is called sometimes spring for the souls. We abstain from meat and dairy simply because it takes more time to prepare. In addition, this kind of food gives more “energy” for bodily sins. But the main aim of fasting is to revitalize our soul through repentance, prayer and good deeds. Over the history, christianity had different fasts, the ones web have today are in memory of the 40 days fasting of the Lord.

@@OrthodoxTalks I’m not trying to be combative. I truly wish to understand. When I fast all I can think of is the food I can’t have. That’s a huge distraction away from focused time on the needs of the soul. I never thought about the time to prepare food as a factor so that would make sense. Thanks for mentioning that.

You’re right! Food preoccupies our minds but we need to have our soul in mind as well. Fast is a training camp for that if you will.

However a grilled chicken breast takes you 5 minutes to cook; a pot of beans: hours. Moreover, the God given fast is **no food at all**. This is also the fast of Moses, Elijah, David, Jesus and many others. Also, this is the fast that is known to cure epilepsy and other diseases (_Matthew 17:21_). On the contrary, the christian "fast" where you don't eat meat, eggs and dairy is full of carbs and can only harm an epileptic.

Not gonna lie. The Great Lent fast is HARD. Just saying. I know Fr. Paul read the beautiful works not to state it but we are human.

I agree. It is a struggle, especially if we are trying to eliminate our sinful desires and thoughts. They come so fast we can hardly notice them until we realize we’re contemplating on them.
