Listening through some decent headphones. The mono cartridge is definitely quieter with much less surface noise. Just a more consistent sound and feels more like everything is coming through one channel. I personally prefer it with these samples.

The Ortofon 2M Blue has my Vote, It brings out the crisp vocals and instruments in the song and adds a hint of stereo to the song.

I prefer the mono because you don't hear the back reverb from Ray's voice and piano solo when playing the blue....sounds like the phasing is a little off. Also the vertical setup both cartridges look like they are not aligned correctly especially the blue.

Summing the channels to a Mono sound is what you need like dedicated a mono switch on a pre amp, this will get rid on the imbalance of the stereo channelling that is only detecting noise as there is nothing audible there. Also older records will sound better with a conical stylus and a cartridge that tracks slightly heavier this will allow the stylus to ride higher in the groove away from any damage or worn areas further down giving a more pleasing effect as it reduces the the upper frequencies where distortion is audible

Yep, however, each channel is never going to be identical, which means possible phase issues. However, summing is how I have been rolling for years now. One day I will try just using one channel sent to both left and right. I think more noise, but certaintly no phase issues

the record has a very clean groove, the stereo stylus is doing a great job of tracking, would be interesting to hear a slighly more worn record and i think the mono cartridge woukd win through, as on the second clip.

It is true that the mono cartridge offers a better focus and less surface noise. The blue is clearly misaligned, this adds more distortion and imbalance between both channels. The test is not fair.
@geolectric_universe

The misalignment - is that the tilt of the Blue cartridge that I'm seeing? The Blue is clearly tilted towards the outside of the record compared to the Mono cart.
@ROBERTODILANDRO
2 жыл бұрын
@@geolectric_universe Exactly, it is inclined and therefore the needle is not tracing the groove correctly, especially noticeable in the second sample. It is clearly heard how it distorts the left channel, in addition to the volume imbalance between both channels.

The benefit of mono cartridges will mostly be realized with mono records pressed in the 50s and early 60s that have a slightly larger grooves than standard stereo or recently pressed mono records.

The depends entirely on the stylus, not the system - but otherwise agreed. Vintage Mono generally demands a different cut than modern reissues et. al.

It‘s obvious that the Blue creates a messier sound overall. It‘s not intended for the chosen format.The Blue still sounds ok with this near mint LP, but the Mono will truely outshine it by a Supernova on older, worn vinyl. Would love to see a comparison on that! 😃👍

Mono quieter from the start! Also, has more depth. I'll go with the mono cart just due to the fact the phasing issue with the blue.

The Mono stylus does a better job definitely, less surface noise, sounds more "original", more accurate, lots of details and it adds a lot of character to these tracks. BTW, i'm listening this on Neuman monitors in my home studio with a Duet Apogee. Thanks for the test. ;)

They sound about the same, but the blue cart is the winner for stereo and mono playing. No need to mess around with mono only cartridge unless one feels compelled and has extra stereo equipment to create another mono only listening area.

Personally I don't think you should just pay money on 2M mono if you have 0M or 2M red/blue etc But if you are primarily playing monos then maybe worth it Just personal preference i guess

Is the stylus also mono? Is it the 25 micrometer standard from 1950 or the 18 micrometer standard, what was introduced in 1958 with stereo records?

If you want the best audible results playing mono vinyl, then you really should buy a true mono cartridge. From what I understand, the Ortofon 2M Mono cartridge, is not a true mono cartridge at all, but just a stereo cartridge that Ortofon has summed (bridged) the L & R channels together internally. Some other manufacturers do this as well, and lead you to believe you're buying a mono cartridge. If you're ok with this compromise for a solution, then there's no need to buy and install a new cartridge at all. Just keep using your 2m blue, or whatever stereo cart you already have installed on your tonearm, and try this: Get 1 RCA Y cord w/2 RCA female ends into 1 male RCA jack, and another RCA Y cord w/1 female RCA end into 2 male RCA jacks. Plug the RCA male output jacks from your turntable into the 2 RCA female ends of the 1st Y cord, then it's single male RCA jack into the 2nd Y cord's single female end. Finally, plug the 2nd Y cord's 2 RCA male ends into your phono stage. This will sum the L & R channels of your stereo cartridge externally, and you can always unplug the 2 Y cords when you want to play stereo records. You'll accomplish the same results, and save yourself a few hundred dollars!

The difference is just that. Pros and cons. A bit here and a bit there. The advantage of mono cartridge is often over exaggerated.

Often, yes, but not always. If chosen and done right a good true Mono-Setup on a Mono record is worlds apart and miles ahead - it certainly pays to walk the extra mile... but if you just swap cartridges - well, what you give is what you get...

The designated mono cartridge reproduces the original dedicated mono signal more truthfully and quieter than stereo-mono blue. Is it worth the extra cost for a mono cart? Now that's a video.

Epiphany at Ortofon: Let's take our entry-level stereo cartridge (you know the model we have basically flogged since the early 1970s, only changing the exterior design and a few superficial specs along the way), give it a spheric stylus and solder the Left and Right output together. We call it the 2M Mono and sell it for 400 Euros to people who are already being misled into thinking they get real mono reproduction from modern reissue records made with stereo cutting heads and narrow grooves. At the same time we keep the good old D 25 M in the catalogue for those who have a clue, along with the usual stuff for those with more money than minds.

honestly i expected to hear more difference; ok the mono is more focused and won't TRY to play back a fake stereo effect (the mono sounds to me like listening to only one channel while the stereo like listening to same the same music from the 2 channels)....but is it that -to me- small improvement worth the price of buying a dedicated mono cartridge? but sure the mono wins here.

According to Ortofon, the 2M Mono SE doesn’t require mono equipment. As per their site: Strapped output delivers the same output signal from both sets of pole pins. This effectively eliminates the need for mono-specific equipment, making it possible to enjoy true mono reproduction on any stereo playback system.

the azimuth alignment on the blue looks likes off, and you have some serious channel imbalance as a result, also some midrange vocal distortion. It's impossible to make any judgement while the setup is this poor.
