Steve, your videos are typically great, and I commend you for the work you put into them. I'm not a fan of this one (or most other sfx technique videos). Photographers spend a lot of time, energy, and money to get perfect focus via camera, lenses, tripods, techniques, etc. This unnecessary filter effect ignores all of that effort for (what I consider to be) a low rent effect. Plus, I really think most Photoshop work is unnecessary. If you've captured a good photo, you typically don't need anything beyond your normal Lightroom workflow. My experience is that Photoshop is a last resort to try and fix a problem. Maybe I'm doing it wrong...or maybe I'm just lazy! Of course, for anyone intending to alter the photographic process for the sake of art, well then go right ahead.

This is great!!! Steve you are just awesome. Thanks so much! Very helpful and love your style. A question for you if i may, you are probably familiar with the work of this Russian lady photographer Elena Shumilova (since her work went viral in recent weeks), would you say that the effect she has in these photos of her kids with animals is a variation of the Orton Effect? (the work of Meg Bitton also comes to mind, now that i think of it)....of course, don't bother if you aren't familiar with the above mentioned. Best regards! A subscriber for life :)

In looking through her work, I have to say I'm not sure. I do see some traces of an orton style effect, but I also see some other effects going on as well. Really tough to say, but she does have some nice work!

Thanks! :) Pulling down the clarity in Lightroom has a similar effect, or is it just me?
@backcountrygallery
10 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's similar, but not quite the same. There's actually a pretty good variety of techniques to get a misty / soft feel to your images, and all are just a bit different. This happens to be the one I use most of the time, but there are a lot of options out there to get similar looks.

Hi At the beginning you go to "apply image" to duplicate the layer and then set it to "screen" mode. Is that any different to hitting command-J after selecting the layer to make a copy and use the blending mode menu in the layer palette as you did next when you set a layer to "multiply" mode ? I guess not... Here is a shortcut to merge down a layer. Select the layer above and hit command-E (control-E on PC)
@backcountrygallery
9 жыл бұрын
Hi - Thanks for your comment. You use Apply Image instead of changing the layer blend mode because you actually need the layer in your layers pallet to be in "normal" mode or it doesn't work right when you copy it and turn to Multiply and then merge down.

A great video, thanks . With subjects such as close ups of small birds for example, would you leave the affect just to the background, or still carefully apply it to the less sharp areas of the bird......I really like the slightly 'romantic' look it gives the images, but with smaller and detailed animals it seems a balance between that and losing detail.
@backcountrygallery
5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how I do it :) I use a layer mask and just apply it where I think it needs it and in VERY subtle amounts for wildlife (I don't use it all that often with wildlife, has to be the "right" subject).
@plinkyplanky9651
5 жыл бұрын
Yes that fits with my own experiences with it, though i do also like what it does to just backgrounds sometimes....and leave it off the 'main subject' completely........It's a great technique.....thanks for bringing it to my attention with the video, and your Photoshop 'actions' that make it so quick and easy to do...appreciated!
