Video footage taken on July 26 in Nose, Osaka Prefecture, shows a local troupe rehearsing a “joruri” puppet theater featuring two anime-inspired puppets ahead of its first performance outside the town. The town, where the performance by a narrator accompanied by a samisen player was staged more than 200 years ago, created two female mascots in 2014. The puppets modeled after the high school girl characters made their debut on the joruri stage last year. It was only in 1998 that puppets and musicians joined the traditional performing arts, now known as Nose Ningyo Joruri. (The Asahi Shimbun)
