A couple more days until the Olympic relay! I really hope he doesn't start out on the first lap , he has proven in earlier races that he can't hurt another runner with his blades. He does best in exchanges where he doesn't start off. Fingers crossed for August 9th!

" "We got to Europe and I wanted to run well," said Pistorius. "But I fell asleep on one of the flights to Europe on the belt buckle of the plane, and it inflamed my hip. "It was the stupidest thing but I struggled for two weeks to get it back to where it was. "I couldn't stand straight or even lift my leg and it just kind of killed my confidence in the first couple of races of the season." " ^Minor inconvenience for an able bodied runner^

oh and did ya know he suffered a knee injury during his wrestling days at school? I mean for all those who say he can't be hurt . .or have an unfair advantage! Runners do have knees, do they not? as you were. . .

So if a normal runner gets a mild inflammation of the hip the resulting effect on his/her training regime is what exactly?

The prostehtic is not designed for speed, it is designed to replicate/approximate the bodies own natural capacity for speed. By all accounts and on the strength of empirical data it does not even match the natural appendage, never improve on it. On what basis do you think it is BETTER than a real leg? It may be slightly more efficient in a very narrow context (no wind resistance, steady speed, no turns), but that is a long way off from showing that it compensates for muscle loss.

Certainly the risk PROFILE is different, but no two people have the same risk profiles to begin with. What you are arguing (without a shred of evidence) is that the ABSOLUTE risk is higher for a normal runner. Not only is your position not borne out by the facts in this particular case, but a little "putting yourself in someone else' shoes" would almost certainly cure you of any of the grand illusions you have about how much of advantage not having lower limbs is in general.

That is a pretty specious argument you have there. Are you aware that Pistorius fell asleep on a airline seat belt earlier this year and got his leg-stump inflamed? A minor inconvenience for "normal" athlete was a major issue for him because it made it very difficult to even put on the prosthesis. Different people are physiologically prone to different injuries, and thus your argument is invalid: there are some injuries which will uniquely affect him as much or more.

The way you argue one would have to conclude that being born without a fibula is like being born with an abnormally strong immune system or an unusual capacity to overcome jet-lag. If you can't generalize the argument beyond the narrow point you want to prove it is by definition invalid. If he had been born without an arm would you disqualify him because he can't get gangrene in his arm too, or because he has a weight advantage? What if he was born with large feet and needed bespoke shoes?
@chanin12

That would be Who's or Who is! Not Whose...proving the point! Please go look at a picture of hamstrings and see how far they extend up the leg. Also, I hope you never lose any limbs because it would probably pretty hard for you to accomplish anything....This guy had to overcome way more than a pulled hamstring! Yeah! he has a huge advantage! It is sad that you are so ignorant!

You mean like the way that swimmers can just go into competition with any old beach wear and hope to compete? Think about what you are saying here. Because someone has no predisposition to a specific class of injury they shouldn't compete? That's insane! It would take very little to prove the same for every athlete. The question of whether the prosthetic offers a technological advantage has been answered in the negative, so you have no basis to claim it is an enhancement of any kind.

I hope none of u ever have amputee'd children who come home one day & say "Mom/Dad I want to be an Olympian" I'd love to see the video of you telling him/her that they can't be one because of the unfair advantage of having no legs, having to learn to use "fake" legs to run & being disabled by societies standards. WOW, disgusting behavior!! wow. . .
@chanin12

He can still get injuries. Lower leg injuries are not the only injuries and he could pull an hamstring. Do you know where the hamstrings are? Also, what about a hip injury. First, it was that the carbon fiber provided more speed and spring...when that didn't work now it is all about injuries. Seriously, pick an excuse and quit hatin!

'Health and Safety' ... He has spikes on the bottom of his blades just the same way all the runners have spikes on their shoes ... That's a a stupid excuse, at least in London he was allowed to run a different leg.
