thanks so much for this video, Scott. I'm 70 and using the OSEE T7 with my new Lumix G9 II that arrived today. All works fine except I can't see any menu items on the camera display and they are hard to read on the OSEE. I've pressed DISP several times, all I see is what the lens sees. The display is NOT completely black. also - I use Sony batteries to power the OSEE but can't find anywhere in the manual where it shows me how to see the OSEE battery level. Thanks for your great videos. They are such a help. Jim

Excellent review as always, thank you! So how do you choose between the monitor, or the camera (I'm a fellow Z cam user) for the tools? (peaking, waveform, zebras, LUT, etc) Is it better to use the camera, or the monitor?
@ScottDumas

Thanks so much! I personally always use the monitor's tools because the camera's tools cause delay/lag on the HDMI output and it's annoying. False color and waveforms on this monitor, for example, are not affected by the monitoring LUT either so, it doesn't seem to be a problem whatsoever.

Do you mean the cheese plate for the rear of the larger monitor? Yeah, I wish it was cheaper (bought one myself as well) but in my case I couldn't find a plate that I already had which worked so I was ok with it. I think the price is likely due to the lack of demand... they don't mass produce that type of thing like Smallrig does. I think if they did just include it from the start and add an extra $20 or so onto the price of every monitor they sell it would be a better solution.

Still dealing with repair. My fault for taking my time with it, but shipping to China is a complete nightmare. They offered $300 to ship and I wanted to try FedEx myself. They quoted me $750 one way. So now I went back to OSEE for theirs and it’s up to $370 now. So I’m going to be paying $750ish for a repair on this thing. They need to get someone in the USA to handle repairs. I’m just in a bad situation where there’s no alternative without spending $2000+. EDIT: UPDATE: I've received quick responses thus far. It's currently in customs in Beijing, hoping it clears soon. I just need it back in mid-August, so not too worried yet. UPDATE 2: After being stuck in customs since the 29th, I wrote them. They said they do not expect to get the item and that they will instead sell me a B-Stock item at 50% off ($750 total). Including the $370 I already spent - it would be close to the cost of a new one. This continues to get worse. We'll see what happens next. I'm certainly not doing that.
@ScottDumas

Hey I'm so sorry to hear that. Glad to hear Osee is trying to do what they can to help but those costs are outrageous! I've shipped my actual camera back to China for repair and it cost about $30 (from Japan). I wonder if Covid is causing these prices to rocket? I'm sure that's part of the issues with getting stuck in customs as well. I guess I've lucked out with shipping costs because I've never dreamed of paying anything close to that- FedEx or otherwise. And although I'm closer to China, I'm way out in the countryside (we don't actually even have FedEx haha). Anyway, very very sorry to hear about the difficulties, but thank you for keeping this updated with honest info about your experience.

Great review Scott, thanks. It looks like a great monitor. One question that I can't seem to get a clear answer on: do you know if there's a mirror mode so it can be used in a teleprompter? I sometimes use an old SmallHD monitor in a teleprompter and you can flip the image vertically and horizontally so that it works, but many monitors don't have this option. My Shogun Inferno only flips the image horizontally, so I can't use it in the teleprompter, which is a shame. They've added mirror mode to the Shinobi, but not the Inferno...
@ScottDumas

Honestly, besides this one it's a hard choice. The T7 is a bit unique (Ok- SmallHD is similar) and the speed and usefulness of the page system combined with the quality of their assist features is why I love it... but most other monitors are extremely similar. Portkeys has a handful of great monitors that span a range of prices, Feelworld is also getting really feature packed for the price and their new UI is very good as well. Godox even came out with a pretty solid little monitor although it's not very bright. I think with other monitors it will depend what's important to you- an intuitive UI? build quality? brightness? advanced assist features? price alone? a lot of monitors have a few of those but not necessarily all of them (which definitely doesn't mean they're bad- just have to choose which matches what you need) Hope that helps! :)

Hey Scott, finally managed to get my hands on one of these. Wow, it is SO much easier to use than the Shogun Inferno! And no fan noise ;-) Love the scene/tools set up and the joystick. I often film in the freezing cold, and all too often the Atomos touch screen doesn't work with my frozen paws. Thanks for the recommendation. When you're using your Z Cam with it, can I ask which of the false colour settings you use please? Curious to know, many thanks in advance.

Hey, glad to hear you're happy with it! Never thought of the cold hands issue with a touch screen, but it's very true. This would even work with gloves, which is great... and everything will already be set up in pages for different uses so you don't have to spend time turning all kinds of functions on and off, just swap between the pages. As for settings with the Z Cam, I actually haven't been using that camera for a while so can't remember for sure, but I think it was one of the RED settings. I tested which worked best for me (targeting skin tones and middle grey) just by cycling through the options after I had my camera exposed on a scene how I knew I want to expose my footage. If that makes sense. Hope that helps!

There's been mixed feelings on that. The safest is definitely a separate battery. If you always connect power before HDMI, and remove HDMI before disconnecting power... it should be safer though.

The portkeys is still a great monitor but, the Osee is -silent -larger -(a little) brighter -better/faster UI, by a long shot for me personally Portkeys does still have a full metal build but the OSEE feels incredibly solid anyway, and Portkeys has SDI, while the G7 would be necessary for SDI on the OSEE side of things. Portkeys does also have camera control, but I never use it. It's annoying on the smaller 5" screen and the physical camera controls are easier for me. Not sure if that helps, but if you're ok with a 7" monitor, the OSEE is the way to go. If you need something more compact, they do have other great options with the same user interface, but less bright (I think).

You're right that it maxes out at 4k30, but most (if not all) cameras can output a lower frame rate and/or resolution even when recording in 60+fps or 6/8k... since it's not recording, only monitoring, there's generally no major problems with that anyway and it's pretty standard for any non-recording monitor at the moment.

How does it compare with the portkeys bm5, especially on the Z Cam E2?
@ScottDumas

The T7 is quieter (silent), bigger, brighter (a little), better user interface by quite a lot in my opinion. Takes a number of clicks and 5-10 seconds to turn on/off anything that's not set to one of the 4 preset buttons... takes 1-2 seconds on the OSEE. Switching back and forth between a "shooting page" and "exposure page" is sooooo nice. The only thing you're really loosing is a full metal build and camera control ...I honestly don't use camera control much, I have a few functions like ISO and aperture mapped to the clutch handle and I have gotten SO used to the physical buttons on the camera that it's just as fast if not faster that way anyway. The BM5 is still a great monitor, and probably what I'd call 2nd best after the OSEE, but there's a lot that make the OSEE a better choice for me at least. I will still use the BM5 when on something like the Crane 3S though, just because I need a bit of a lower profile rig to clear the motors.

Can this control your camera on screen

Unfortunately not. I think portkeys monitors are dole off the only which can do that

Scott Dumas I need some help bro which one of these monitors can flip the screen sideways to take portraits like if I turn my camera to get portraits?
@ScottDumas
4 жыл бұрын
@@five18audio I'm not 100% sure what you mean... when you turn the camera sideways (portrait orientation) to take a photo, the monitor mounted on top would also be physically sideways, right? So you wouldn't need the image on the monitor to flip... sorry if I'm misunderstanding!

@@ScottDumas I can tell that you like it and it looks impressive. The killer function for me is actually to customize that pages. It seems like, that you blinded with this 3000 Nits. 21 people, otherwise I have no idea why they smashed the wrong thumb.... I you sure, that this amount of nits is not against the geneva convention? 😂😂😂

they pretty much copied the SmallHD interface..

I've used SmallHD before and it's similar but not the same. They've also used this interface for a while in other monitors ...not saying one was not inspired by the other, but it's the same as saying any monitor with 4 function buttons on the top copied each other. Plus this isn't touch screen, which makes a big difference
