Yo Charles, It was sent to me some time back with a note, "I saw you at an event starting engines when modellers were having problems and you started every engine with one or two flicks - don't know how you do it but you deserve the hat". I do not know who sent it but I love it and it is now my trademark. Thank you for your interest. Brian Oily

I ran mine for 45 minutes yesterday, for the first time. 1.75 turns open, for both screws, as recommended. 10W30 synthetic, al dente (to get a little smoke, on low power). About 1000m elevation. It took 2 tanks of gas, until it would idle. (I ran it about 3850 rpms, with an 18x12" prop.) It will kick back, with a chicken stick. I used a large electric starter. Not a particularly impressive sound. It needed positive throttle, to keep running. Manual says to run 2-3 liters of fuel through it, before trying to go to high speed for any amount of time. I ran it about 17 minutes on a 12 ounce tank, at about 1/3 throttle. Carb and fuel pull seem to be much better than the GGT15, which I found unusable after it heated up a bit. Nice machining! But grandma sound. Butterflies like the sweet smell of the synthetic oil. 102F

Yo Oudeis, Sorry for the delay in answering - my wife has been very sick and I have had to arrange for her to go to a hospital and it all uses up a lot of time. I am pleased to hear you finally got around to running that beautiful engine. It will always kick when you use a chicken stick (don't like them myself) and I find a hand start (for me) is always best but...you need to set the propeller in the best position in regards to the Hall effect sensor and the magnet. As to the 'Grandma" sound, yes...I like a good engine gurgle but it is a problem at so many fields and many modellers are trying to reduce the sound. If you want a really nice sound, purchase a Turbo Header muffler (Google it) and these are of extremely high quality and do not fall off. I am a bit concerned about the oil you are using - let me know what type and brand it is, please. Contact on oilyhand@bigpond.net.au and we can discuss it in full. Keep in touch. Regards Brian Oily (aka Brian Winch)

Yo Brobolio, Nice to catch up. Yes, I also miss the magazine - certainly was nice to chat with my eastern neighbours (Canada, USA, México etc.) I do write for other magazines, have been for about 40 years. In Australia is Airborne magazine and RCMN and for the UK in RCM&E under the logo 'The Wizard of Oz' and this magazine is available on your side of the water. Keep in touch, always nice to hear from you. Brian Oily Hand.

BTW, I ran 2 x 1500mAh 2s Lipos on the ignition. And I used standoffs to get the carb clear of the test firewall. I think that the guys who cut a hole in the firewall and run the carb from behind the firewall (without an air intake extension from the outside), are crazy.

Yo Cunnio, I'm sorry - I did carry out a consumption test on this engine but I can tell you it is very frugal. I carried out the run in process and tested quite a number of propellers plus running it for the video and there was still fuel left in the 1 litre tank. AS a guess I would say somewhere between 40 and 60cc per minute at full RPM. I hope that helps - sorry I cannot be more precise. Thank you for your interest. Brian (aka OILYHAND)

Hello Brian , Thank you for all the engine test , I have a question about the OS 40 GF engine. He must adjust the valve clearance . Thank you in advance for your answer. Patrick
@BrianOilyEngines
8 жыл бұрын
Yo Patrick , I am pleased you enjoyed that test - a very nice engine. To adjust the tappets the engine has to be cold, remove the plug and bring the piston up to Top Dead Centre (TDC) - top of the stroke which you can test with a wood dowel or similar (not a metal probe) and both valves are closed - tappets parallel and straight. The gap is 0.004mm or 0.0015" if you use imperial measure. When set a 0.1mm gauge will not fit in the gap.Nip up the lock nuts but do not strain (lock too tightly) so you don't damage the adjusters or the thread. A couple of drops of oil and the job is done . Regards Brian Oily

Hi I love your hat.. I am looking to buy a GF40 locally and I know this is an older video. My question is does your engine still run good and have you had any problems with it. I am doing research before I purchase this engine. I am going to stick one in a Spitfire with four bladed propeller, it should be fun. Thank you GFB

Yo Greeny, That hat is now my trademark - well known far afield. When you say 'locally - where are you? As to the engine running still, well, what would you expect from an O.S. engine? They keep running longer than your interest. I have had a number of reports from readers to say how much they like the engine as it is so reliable and performs very well. It will be good in a Spitfire as it will run inverted perfectly. Thank you for your interest in my reviews. Regards Brian Oily

Brian Winch Thanks for the fast reply, I hope to have it flying by July. I will be flying here in Oregon near North Plains. It will be fun. I will have a Keleo Pitts exhaust made for it and possibly a Biela 4 blade propeller if they ever com back in stock. I may look else where for a prop. Happy flying GFB

I was reading that this engine actually has a PVC valve for emission control LOL. I know in the US small engines lawn equipment have to have emission controls. I wonder how it would sound without the muffler?

Yo Fariasda, Thank you for your interest in my testing. I am sorry, I don't know your language - I speak only Australian English but, as an attempt, are you asking about the performance? If so, I recorded 8,766 RPM on an APC 18 x 8 propeller. You can email me at oilyhand@bigpond.net.au if you would like further information but...only English, please. Regards Brian Oily

With sump oil?
@BrianOilyEngines
6 жыл бұрын
Yo Camera etc etc. None of our model engines use sump oil - regarding fuel they are all to be considerate to be two stroke as they all use a 'petroil' mixture - the required oil mixed with the petrol and this works extremely well. Buy yourself one of these engines - you will like it. Regards, Brian Oily

Yo Camera, Nice to meet you. I think you are my first contact from Indonesia so welcome to our little fraternity. You said you liked the sound of the Turbo Header mufflers and I certainly agree as they can put out a very good sound. I fitted two to a Saito 57 cc horizontal twin and the sound was like music - I listened to it for about 30 minutes up and down the musical scale. You can contact me by Email at :oilyhand@bigpond.net.au any time you want to discuss engine topics or modelling matters. Regards Brian Oily

Yo Kyle, I am sorry, I cannot understand what you mean by the 'one way berring or bump only' . I am thinking you mean 'bearing' but that still does not let me know what you are asking. +Brian Winch does it have a plate on back or can you only start it from the prop
@BrianOilyEngines
8 жыл бұрын
Yo Kyle, This is not a converted hand tool engine - it is specifically designed for model aircraft use. The crankshaft is overhung - nothing out the back at all. All starting is done by rotating the propeller by flicking it or spinning it with an electric starter. Regards Brian Oily
