It's only as haunting as you let it be, or rather, as much as you like Ai as a character and as much as her death affected you as a viewer. If you're like me, and were more invested in Akane's plot, then the moment feels more sad than haunting, because it shows Akane supressing and shelving her true self to be someone she isn't, someone that idol fan degenerates want her to be. It's still a strong moment, but the reaction varies a lot depending on who you care about more, Ai or Akane.

Also, Killing off Ai this way did Akasaka Aka a huge favor of simplifying the story progression - apart from having to one-up her every time a new celebrity comes into picture. From a writing perspective, Ai Hoshino gave the other characters - particularly Aqua and Ruby a motivation and purpose for their action for here on out and also gave the story of Oshi-no-ko an answer to "How would you like the story to end?". Even the some longest running shows has an answer to this question. Conan: "find a way to permanently reverse the effect of the drugs and take down the masterminds behind it, Naruto: "Naruto becomes the Hokage", One Piece: "Luffy becomes the pirate king", Inuyasha: "Shikon Jewel is reassembled". Keeping Ai alive will probably also work out, however, Akasaka Aka would have to figure out what her long-term career in the JP entertainment industry would pan-out. Remember, even in real-world, most celebrities have short bursts time-periods of high-publicity. And then they either becomes someone who would sort of "just be there" or fade away into nothing - until their next burst comes. Idols also have a very limited reach to what kind of fans they would reach out to, which is why most idols - if they stay in showbiz - would go on to transition into something else. Either solo-career with more mature music (Justin Timberlake), Acting (Ju Jingyi, Alec Su etc), and streaming/youtube (Mizumi Yuka). You have to basically work out how that transition goes, and how you would develop the character. In my oppinion, Developing Ai without some major events happening around her that impacted her - after her childbirth in Ch1 ofc - is NOT going to be easy either. Imagine having to deal with this all the way and still trying to figure out how the story should end in an organic way compared to just killing her off and then have the death impact literally every character involved up to that point, I'd say the latter is still way easier to work with

The reason is simply the story would be dictated by AI's will and everything would feels off if AI doesnt do anything or simply off screen. Thats what its mean by powerfull. AI’s death definitely serves the story well especially with how it effects Ruby, and Aqua. Don’t know if I agree that her character is too strong though. I mean she can’t even keep her kids names straight, and is so emotionally damaged she can’t even tell her kids she loves them because of how burnt out her Idol career has made her. Maybe if she lived they could have explored how Ai feels about Ruby wanting to be a Idol after everything she had to go through. Instead of dying, Ai could have become crippled through either malice or an accident, maybe make her wheelchair bound. It would effective end her career, but maintain her role as a mother. She could then help out her children in vital moments, mostly with advice but in special moments she could even make a physical effort while still in the wheel chair. Ruby would still become an idol, but with her mother's support, while Aqua might make it his goal to become a doctor again to possibly fix Ai's spinal injury or whatever in the future, or at least prevent it from happening to others, maybe he could still act on the side as a teen.

I think it is even worse: Perfection can't be permanent, she can't really grow without losing something and she can't fail without losing something. She has to remain static and therefore become boring. By taking her out, she has become something more than human. I’m not sure if the story as a whole would be as impactful if Ai didn’t die. The story a whole is about what the entertainment industry can do to a person and Ai was the example that something like that can happen as well as the issues the other characters face throughout the series. I appreciate it being done this way though because we still get Ai throughout the series in some shape or form as well as the underlying revenge plot for suspense.

For example, (potential spoiler in case anyone hasn't watched) In Akane's case, if the course of events were still to lead to her doing that "perfect Ai imitation" which a lot of people including myself went crazy over, it would still be impressive, but she would just be feeding the already dominant presence of Ai. As much as I like Ai no matter how much I think I can’t imagine the story being as good as it is now. We wouldn’t have gotten to know so many characters and the series would veer off from the mark of “the dark side of the entertainment industry” and it would become more like a rise to fame type of anime with wholesome moments much like Spy x Family. For Oshi no Ko to stand out and develop the way it did it really made sense with what he did. Even if I imagine her with characters who have problems like Akane or Arima, she would totally still outshine them. No matter what it would’ve been about Ai. The other characters wouldn’t be as compelling and especially for Aqua and Ruby, even if we still had the story we did in the current episodes, but with Ai, it would just be too messy. I’m currently reading the Manga and it is just such and amazing work!

Though I loved Ai killing her made a lit of sense. A lot of the first episode IS focused around her. She carries not only her group, but her agency, she is her childrens hero and they are bending over backwards for her, a character died just because she was near. Though an argument can be made that the show could try and focus on the seporation of Idol Life and Personal life Ai doesnt have much of a personal life at all, she is Ai the Idol at all times, a supposably unobtainable status no mere mortal can reach. And yet it took 3 days for people to forget her and move on. It was all about Ai. Until it wasn't, and now the second biggest moment is Akane knows how to lie and "become perfect" just as easilly after being exposed to the Brutality of the Industry.

@414Anime i would definetely recommend reading the manga; if you actually read the manga, you can see a major difference to the anime. In the manga, it actually makes sense and is a necessary point to have Ai killed, since the revenge of Aqua gets more and more focused. You also can see, how well the Anime is actually animated, it truely is a master piece, sometimes TOO good tbh, and there im referring to the scene of Ai's death in the anime. The animation was so well done, it leaves a huge impact on the people watching the anime, it is different in the manga tho. yes, she dies there as well of course, but the impact is by far not as strong as you had it in the anime. so that being said, in the anime you still are looking for scenes with Ai and it is always a heartbreaking moment if she is shown, but that draws (kinda) the focus off of the actual plot of the anime, being aqua's revenge. this is actually really well done in the manga, where you can fully focus on aqua's revenge and you are staying hyped for everything he does. i personally didnt have that feeling in the anime, since Ai was animated and written so well there that she was still leaving everyone in her shadow anytime she was even being mentioned. i really don't want to blame the anime for that, the studio did a great job, but (imo) a bit of a too great job. from manga perspective, i was absolutely fine with Ai dying in that scene, cuz it made things after that a LOT more interesting. The anime Ai tho should have been kept alive, they made her way too perfect as you could easily forget her while watching the other characters perform. That is why i would say it would make absolutely sense and probably would be a hit as well, if the released a spin-off where Ai actually is still alive. Of course it would be more like a slice of life anime or something like that, but i still think it would be one of the most popular one's, since Ai as a character in anime is one of the most perfect characters i have seen in a long time in anime overall.

The problem that I have with Akasaka’s sentiment is that she became more popular because of her death and she’s still the most popular character in Japanese polls. If you look at character polls the most one recently done after the new volume came out the top 4 characters in order are: Ai, Ruby, Aqua, and Akane. Ruby is the character most like Ai other than Ai herself. Aqua is obviously Ai’s son, and Akane was the one who perfectly incapsulated and imitated Ai’s character based on her understanding and research of Ai. While I don’t mind a story like this it’s very clear they should of just embraced her popularity and went forward with what they wanted to, because even now not much has changed.

Ai's death is the centre of the story, which people who love her fail to realise. She was a very captivating idol, beautiful and talented. Her sudden death caused a stir both in the manga world and in reality. It shows that things can happen in an instant. She was stabbed to death, a murder planned by her ex-partner. Now that it has been revealed why Hikaru killed her, I can only say that Ai led a sad life for most part, and she made it happy by being cheerful and bubbly. She always blamed herself for lying, but if that girl didn't lie her life would be depressing for sure. Hikaru, her ex was tramatised and depended on her. He regarded her as his savior, a role Ai never thought she'd be playing. The world saw her as a beautiful entertaining doll. Her children regarded her as the perfect mother, perfect idol as well because they were her fans themselves. Everyone, everyone felt Ai was THAT. The IT item. An "item", literally. "Ai can never do that" "She'd simply laugh" "Ai is Ai" Even if people focus on Aqua and Ruby, Kana and everyone else, I can never forget Ai. The darkside of being an influence, entertainer or basically the very pure side but people don't mind it unless someone gets killed. That's what happened with Ai. Idols get death threats, but she was literally killed. I think what sucks is that even now, some people fail to understand that she was just a normal human being and still think of her as the image she put up.

Ai's Death was indirectly the most unexpected Pantera reference I could had made as the lead singer of said band met with a similar fate (Loony Fan) at a Columbus Nightclub in 2005 and lead to the creation of the song "Betrayed" by A7X (A band I listen to regularly unlike Pantera where I listen to once in a blue moon) but there were 2 key differences (Cause of Death and The Location being on Tour for the Pantera case) Even though I'm not really into the J-Pop/K-Pop Idol industry this series has made me undergo some realizations about the Rock/Metal Community (Another example is Mike Portney who was the former Drummer of Dream Theater who was dealing with an addiction during the "Metropolis 2000" tour and thus lead to the 12 Step Suite that started with "The Glass Prison" on Six Degrees Of Inner Turblence and ended successfully with "The Shattered Fortress" on Black Clouds and Silver Linings that had a Loose Prequel with "The Mirror" from Awake which gets referenced along the Suite)

Honestly i think keeping Ai alive could have worked, and still talk about how the entertainment industry affects others. I think the only way that would have worked was if, instead of killing her, it traumatized her, or even if the fans (maybe a bunch of them) tried to hurt the twins Would it be as good as what we have now? Probably not, but i think it could have worked. I would love to see a version when Aqua would become a actor to make Ai happy, or even still having the revenge story would exist as a way to bring back Ai's glory

One alternative way they could've kept her in the show, was to have her be physically crippled by the attack, but not die, forcing her out of the showbuisness, but leaving her around for us to see her again.

I can tell, Aqua with AI still alive would probably have been a disliked character. He wouldn’t have the twisted mindset we know, and love him for, he would be in love with his mom, and have a sister complex, with things getting worse if he found out who his sister actually is. He would probably just be a creep that was gifted with the great looks of his parents, getting roles without trying, and he could be emotional without the guilt, and he will have the genius mind of a doctor. I feel like fans wouldn’t know what to think about Aqua.

I think they should do like a "what if" series similarly to what Re:Zero had done with it's different paths (especially Subaru and Rem) that could focus on more of a slice of life concept with Ai learning how to deal with her feelings and the growth of Aqua and Ruby if they had their mother's support

I only started watching "Oshi No Ko" because of a Tweet I read that basically said "Watch "Oshi No Ko," and don't look anything up about "Oshi No Ko." I highly doubt that they would've tweeted that if Ai didn't die, and I wouldn't have kept watching if it weren't for this detective "who's my daddy" plot that killing Ai made. I kind of expected that from the start knowing what I know about how fucked up idol life is especially in Asia. I'm more surprised that they *weren't* going to kill her off since the anime focuses so much on how fucked up being famous in Japan is. And yeah, it's fucked up everywhere, but in America for example you usually know when a celebrity is dating somebody, or has kids, and they're always surrounded by security. In Japan they're encouraged to stay single so they'd have to keep their significant other a secret. Usually if they're caught they get kicked out of the group. One idol got replaced by a fucking robot. And celebrity violence doesn't seem to happen as often in any other first world country at the very least. Of course there are things that happen, but law enforcement in the US cares about rich people at the very least. The police isn't going to ignore it if Taylor Swift is saying that she feels like she's being stalked until she's finally stabbed because the stalker's find out where she was from the reflection of a building in her fucking eyes. (What's extra fucked up is that I don't remember if that was only one case, or if I'm mixing up several cases into one.)

I know he said he didn't read the manga, but it's kind of foreshadowed/ explained upon in a scene. It's where Ai is a background character in a tv show and her part ends up being cut down because she unintentionally outshined the mc for the show. Kind of brilliant in a way thinking about it.

Atleast akane studying to ai hoshinos backstory, and oike aqua feels like she saw ai, its just the shadow of her, atleast ruby started in the stage like her mother, kanas eyes glows |explained that the same moves like ai| and its real, ai hoshino does has a dark secret, a life living with aqua, ruby. Also i feel bad to ai hoshinos final decision of the end making it mostly sad series to netflix ever had.

Another idea I have of she lived, not to make the viewer distracted and still have her alive. What if she was in America or overseas for a movie or a tour for half of the story?

Even though i cried my soul out when she died, I still believe that was a good decision. She was way too great character and, as you say in the video, would take all the attention from everyone else. It's extremely depressing since she was young and had twins, but her death gave story a very strong twist which changed it completely.

Oshi No Ko accomplished the same thing with Ai that Demon Slayer did with Rengoku. Both of them prove that you don't need to establish episodes upon episodes of screentime to connect your character with the audience and make their death hurt like Hell. To me at least, Ai's death is right up there with the saddest anime deaths of all time, along with Rengoku, Jiraya, and so on

I would honestly love whole anime on ai when we are done with Aqua and Ruby's saga then we can get anime on ai with her back story in more depth and could connect to her death in later in series like with bardock goku's father i would root it for it with all my heart 💜✨ to see ai become an idol what's better than that... To see her alive just once more...🥺

You see with the dates and ages by the time the kids get to highschool. Ai would be 32. At this point, Ai would be too old to even be an idol. Just have the time skip with Ai still keeping her life a secret because why not. Ai would be out of the industry with Ruby still trying to follow in her mother's footsteps. Sure, Ai can be used on the sidelines and if she makes a recommendation. Everyone would latch onto it or if shes in the room. Than you'll still have people focus on her because that is how great she is too them. It would still have the current impacts in the story where Ai is killed off. Anytime someone mentions her, everyone pays rapt attention because its Ai. Boom problem fixed. Ai is 32 and by 25 many J-pop idols would have retired. It can show Ai struggling to find an actual job and show that people who were successful in the industry and get out of said industry. It shows them struggle to find actual jobs, have fans still seek them out, etc and etc.

I think after Oshi no ko is done like the manga they should make a entirely different manga about Ai’s rise to stardom giving us more background on her relationship

I would keep her alive if I was the writer and write the series alone. But by writing her off is a benefit since her character is that strong and has effected every character in her reach. With writing how even after her death, she’s still has the influence to other characters and to the story is a very good way to really show how she IS an important part and IS impacting to the series. For me personally it’s always been a headache to have such strong character. Not like that she doesn’t have any flaws, but if she’s kept alive her character has a chance to spun out of control and can become a Mary Sue of the story. Even with how talented the writer is, dealing with too strong character like her is a heavy task.😅 I really admire the author for doing an incredible job with writing her character.

Her death might not have been conceived to be this early, but was definitely planned. It would just be a question of when not if. I really want to see Oshi no Ko get a proper ending for a "revenge tragedy" as Aqua described at the very beginning.

Ai s death really shocked me,but so hard, that I thought about not watching further, and I really think it would be better if she were still living, you could write it like ruby wants to be an idol and AI is giving her tips or with aqua like the one job he had as a child,or AI will love her fans truly in the future, there were so much potential, but her death ruined it,(just my opinion)
