Each year, Mr. Lewis creates a simulated micro-economy in his classroom. It’s an excellent tool for teaching financial responsibility. Using classroom “currency,” students earn money for jobs, pay rent for their desk, pay income and sales taxes, and learn some other financial concepts. While saving towards the year end auction, Mr. Lewis purchases small items throughout the year for students to bid on at auction with the money they earned, such as art supplies, school supplies, small toys, and treats.
At the beginning of the year, students co-create a list of potential bonuses they can earn throughout the year, these bonuses may include things like participating in extracurricular activities, helping others, and meeting their goals. On the other hand, students who don’t meet classroom expectations will be fined some of their classroom dollars. That could happen, for example, if they don’t complete assignments or don’t listen when other students are speaking, once again these fines are created in collaboration with students at the beginning of the year.
The classroom economy helps students learn valuable life skills such as organization, the value of saving, and delayed gratification. Rather than being told about the importance of these skills, they actually experience them. In addition, our classroom economy meets many learning areas in the BC curriculum.
Students have been saving most of their money for the "Year End Auction," where we hope to have bigger and more exciting items. Mr. Lewis relies on the generosity of local businesses and individuals to make this year end event a success. We appreciate any support you can give us.
Donations can be dropped off outside the school office or given to one of our students.
