Excellent review and comparison on packs that that I love. I’m still using my Gregory’s from 1997 along with my Dana Designs packs. They just keep going and going. But it’s time to update. Thanks for the reviews. I just subscribed. 👍

In regards to your observation that there is too much fabric in the lid making it "untidy" that is because it is empty. As you yourself said a rain jacket or in my case since I use this pack in the winter snowshoeing / hiking it is the perfect pocket for a puffy jacket. This is the only external secure pocket on this pack and that means I put all kinds of stuff in there I can keep handy without having to open the main body of the pack all day long.

That is a valid point, but with my pack full and gear in the lid It was always a struggle to close over the top.

I think you could compare Zulu vs Stratos - they both have ventilated back system so such comparison would be more interesting because you'd compare similar competitors

Yes I was going to change to the Stratos so went to the shop and weighed it. I don’t think many of the Osprey pack weights are correct. My Atmos 50 was the only one which was correct.

Brilliant video. The Kestrel looked like it had more spare space than the Zulu though. You’ve convinced me not to get the Kestrel unfortunately but I’m glad you did. I’ve got the 58, love the pack, loathe the brain. It just doesn’t work. It’s huge, and is just all over the place. I was hoping that as they went smaller that wouldn’t still be an issue, you’re the only one I’ve seen mention it. Is the back different to the 58. I would have described it as a trampoline style back on the 58. I would be interested now to see the Zulu but I am after more attachable than what the pack is

I had three kestrel 38,48 & 58, none are trampoline back and make you sweaty. For me none of the brains are neat and tidy like the Zulu. I think the Zulu 40 has same capacity as the Kestrel 38. Really enjoying the Zulu 40. I posted another review if you want to look. Thanks

I have that Kestrel, I like that top lid because I can fit my first aid kit and Steripen to sterilize water within easy reach. Also on the bottom/internal part, I can put my passport or wallet, medication, etc. that I don't want to fall out or get stolen, or wet. That will fill up that nicely the lid and give you quick access. Also, the pad strap at the bottom is a must for even an overnighter to leave more room inside these smallish backpacks. But you can't go wrong with that Gregory pack. I am a fan of them, they tend to be a little lighter.

@@evacoutdoors5867 yeah the weight counts. Would be interesting if gergory or deuter includes the attached raincover to the total bag weight. Right now i am looking for the best "weekend warrior" bag that works for single day or 2-3 day trips. I need to test the deuter to see wheter some of its features like those hidden extendable side pouches are worth the weigh difference for me....else i will get the zulu.

I started watching and got as far as you saying you were reviewing the Gregory "which came yesterday". I stopped there and then. I prefer a review by someone who has tried and tested the kit in the field. I'm not wasting my time watching someone give a rundown on features and benefits of a product without them being able to talk about the comfort, the longevity, how robust the kit is. After you've walked a few hundred miles in all kinds of weather I'd be interested in your opinion then. Sorry to be a tardy bum...
