Osteosarcopenia (defined as combined bone and muscle loss) affects older adults around the world, predisposing them to devastating complications that impact their well-being and quality of life. Typical features of osteosarcopenia include fat infiltration, local and systemic lipotoxicity, and a complex cross-talk between muscle and bone. Additionally, physical inactivity, vitamin D deficiency and poor nutrition accelerate the progression of this condition. In this webinar we will review the current state of knowledge about fat, bone and muscle interactions. We will also analyze preventive measures and therapeutic interventions that can prevent fat infiltration while also increasing bone and muscle mass.
KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THIS WEBINAR INCLUDE:
- To review the pathophysiology of osteosarcopenia
- To discuss the epidemiology and clinical significance of osteosarcopenia
- To review the strengths and limitations of current diagnostic methods for osteosarcopenia
- To discuss evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that pose promising opportunities for both conditions
