Another blast from the past bringing great memories... I was always pleasantly surprised by their quality... I built as a kid the corsair and the Tojo... both excellent kits (lacking on the cockpit for today standards) but great on the outside... I can even remember the place where I bought them from with my mother (I was about 9yo... so, about 40 years ago), a department store, not a hobby shop... I even bought their Tony a couple of years ago from a local model shop for a few pennies! their panel lines still surprise me considering the age of this kits... since then I have added a couple of ARII reboxing to my Amazon wishing list :) They are great options for kids starting in the hobby... cheap, easy to build, and looking great... Thank you again for taking the time to research all of this...!

The Lockheed F-94C had an array of 24 Mighty Mouse missiles in four internal launch racks in the nose where the 20 mm cannon had been located on earlier models. This caused the pilot to be blinded not only by the exhaust plume but the heat damaged the windshield and potentially could cause an engine flameout. Probably Kelly Johnson's most obvious screwup. Seems like Pontiacs in the fifties had things which resembled missile ports on the hood. In school, I shared an apartment almost just across the street from the Aero Spacelines hangar at the Goleta airport where the surviving Super Guppy was normally parked. It didn't fly much but was very impressive when it did. Would make a great 1/48 scale model.

I built their 1:400 scale Nagato way, WAY back in the day. It was an oddball as everything else I was building was 1:700. I found it marked way down in a hobby shop. Battleships, carriers, heavy cruisers and destroyers were my bag. Nagato was a big, beautiful build but as an 8th grader my skills weren't that awesome. Nagato figured prominently in a display of the Japanese ships that participated in the battle of Midway when the original movie premiered at Jackson Mall cinema in 1976. I had Kongo, Akagi, Kaga and Soryu to round out the display. On the US side I had Yorktown, Enterprise, Pensacola and Atlanta. A picture of the display ended up in our local paper.

In the 70-80’s styrene was controlled by a former Shell executive who bought Shell’s business to make styrene and styrene copolymers. His credit was McDonalds calm she’ll contrite for hamburgers. Styrene was a byproduct of another process which made a monomer used in polyesters. Oil prices go up petroleum based monomers (styrene) go up. The opposite is also true. However all these model companies will never return from the grave. The styrene available today is higher quality. Just look at the polystyrene forks and knives you can get in the grocery store. Styrene prices not going down? I'm a complete layman about overall model kit prices, but to me it seems as if prices have always gone up. I started building model kits in the 1970s (prices in Dutch Guilders). Okay prices went up because of inflation. Then the Euro was introduced. It had a fixed conversation value to the Guilder which I still know :-) When I try to remember prices of kits from 40 years ago and try to compare them with present day prices, it doesn't make sense. Inflation happens to the Euro too of course. My best guess is that prices have gone up with about 600% since the 1970s, not corrected for inflation. I wish I had kept some record of the prices over the years. Oh well. I still love building them.
@MartintheTinman
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, prices have increased exponentially. I don't think that the price of the raw materials makes much difference, it's the amount of work that goes into the dies. The Arii reboxings of the Otaki kits are very cheap and so they should be because they're really old dies. In fact I'm certain that the price of an Arii Spitfire isn't that of the Otaki Spitfire plus inflation

Oh TAHK -ee is the correct pronunciation. ie, the British long A sound for the second syllable. Japanese syllable split in words is closer to British splits rather than US English and syllable lengths closer too than the American habit of placing equal stress on all syllables. You're the first (and only) person I've ever heard pronounce it the way you do.
