A few words about the company producing these trains: Stadler started very small in 1942 producing small rail tractors and special products for small private Swiss railway companies, like cogwheel trains. They remained very small with about two dozen employees in the 1990-ies! It was then that they started growing, gradually buying up competitors. In 1995 with the GTW they found a new niche, producing a light, low capacity articulated railcar that was slightly bigger, lighter and easier accessible than the old fashioned railcars they were replacing. The local small railroad company BTI with their meter-gauge single track railway line from Biel to Ins was the first one ordering this product, and they are still operating it today. The GTW was Stadler's first really successful export product. There were more than 600 units produced until 2018. Stadler managed to expand the GTW concept into a Multiple Unit with the bigger and more versatile Flirt platform, managing to create a new standard for commuter trains based on light, fast accelerating MUs, replacing much heavier and harder to maneuver locomotive driven units. And from the start, they were looking at the export market, as Swiss railway companies didn't really order from them in large numbers at first, being loyal to their old suppliers. Stadler was there with the right products at the right time, plus they managed to deliver them almost always on time and almost without teething problems. Now they've grown into a global player running factories worldwide with 10'000-s of employees and positioning themselves in various markets with a wide range of products from trams to high speed MUs to high capacity commuter MUs to cogwheel trains to large freight train locomotives.

Always enjoy your video on Line 2 given how it started and how it's grown. It's a great case study for how we can bring back rail services in North America for at a relatively low cost. I'm going to have to do a Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal trip in the near future to experience all the new transit :D

The new trains look amazing, but I can't help but think... Why Line 2? Why couldn't they get it right like this on Line 1? I rode Line 2 very regularly, going all the way back to when it was just "the O-Train" (i.e. before Line 1 existed). I can think of less than a handful of times that I had to stand on the old train, and now it's getting double the space and 4x the doors, on TOP of the increase in service frequency? This upgrade is way ahead of schedule, which is honestly not even a bad thing! BUT: Meanwhile, Line 1 trains have this weird prioritization of seating over standing room, which results in way less capacity than you could get if it was the other way around, and some of the train cars aren't even interconnected (despite initial promises of being able to walk from one end of the train to the other), which means even less capacity there, low floors, low operating speeds, terrible soundproofing, and this is the MAIN line of the city, the one that 80% of the system's riders will be riding on! It just feels weird that the less traveled, shorter and less expensive Line 2 is going to be so much better than the longer, *much* more used and *much* more expensive Line 1. It almost even feels like the 80km/h operational speed limit was put in place to make sure Line 2 doesn't eclipse Line 1 in every way possible (Line 1's operational speed is also 80km/h, but the Line 1 trains are not rated for more than that anyway) Like, why get this line so right, and then get the other one so wrong? God, Ottawa is so close to having good transit, but they keep dropping the ball hard right when it counts.

You should check out Newag's Impuls trains that are common in Poland. My regional operator ŁKA (in Łódź aglomeration) has both them and Flirt III trains and I actually prefer the Impuls trains. This kind of system (apart from not being electrified) is really the home ground for FLIRTs. While they are quite well built I've found the ride quality on all the FLIRTs I've tried around Europe (from the traditional round front regional sets to the intercity style SOB and Anglia sets) to be pretty poor. It has relatively high vibrations and the suspension is far too hard for a long distance train.

I respect the accomplishments of Stadler and their FLIRT line but they are not my favourite trains. I love the variation of rail equipment in Europe. Each country has its own unique variations of the equipment that becomes a part of its distinctiveness. I'm more familiar with the Netherlands. The trains there seem unique to the country. Even the new ICNG, part of the Coradia family, looks very distinct. This is both the design and the livery applied. When I see FLIRT though, they look far too similar to each other for my liking. All that said, I would love to live in a city that was actively working on improving its infrastructure and what equipment they use is less important than its effectiveness. Stadler absolutely has experience with equipment in environments similar to what Ottawa has.

This is free market economy... Once countries started lifting trade barriers, the most economic designs gained prevalence. I'm only surprised how well Stadler actually competes with the European giants Siemens and Alstom. Stadler was a very small company 25 years ago and wages are very high in Switzerland. It's only recently that Stadler started outsourcing production into countries with a cheaper labour force.

Stadler Flirt is probably the most flexible train platform ever built . It can be adapted to customer needs with a few modifications , power can be diesel , electric , hybrid , and hydrogen . Maybe this is the product that allowed Stadler to step up and compete aggressively with other manufacturers like Alstom and Siemens . Over 2500 unit has been sold , running in every corner of the world , from the freezed areas of Norway and Finland to very hot spots as Texas is . Italy is one of the nations where these trains are well appreciated , many companies bought them including state owned operator Trenitalia . Filrts and High speed trains SMILE ( GIRUNO ) are also used for international connections between Italy , Switzerland and Austria . Allegra narrow gauge trains runs from Italy to Switzerland on one of the most brethtaking railways , the Bernina line . And ( coming soon ) new narrow gauge Stadler trains will appear on another international scenic railway , the Centovalli railway , connecting Italy to Switzerland .So ... let me say ... GO STADLER GO !!!!

I believe NJ Transit was the first transit agency in North American to use the FLIRT DEMU when service on the RiverLine Light Rail started in 2004. Nearly 20 years later, those first generation FLIRTs are still carrying commuters between Trenton and Camden, NJ. I can envisioned FLIRT DEMUs operating on the non-electrified section of the LIRR one day. I just hope the folks at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority can travel to Ottawa and see the latest generation FLIRT DEMU in action once the new line opens there. I can also envisioned FLIRTs operating on Wassaic extension of Metro-North's Harlem Line as well as a on Waterbury and Danbury Branches of the MNR's New Haven Line. I also hope Stadler have an electric version of the FLIRTs for the New Canaan Branch of the MNR's New Haven Line and the proposed Interborough Express for NYC.

The problem I have with wanting SEPTA, or the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, to get at the very least Stadler trains, is that, the only electrified train in the US is a double decker, the KISS, but SEPTA does not use double deckers, in my opinion, because the overhead lines are not tall enough for something like a KISS, though don’t quote me on that. They may have a single deck overhead wire train, though that might have to come from making a custom FLIRT, which I wouldn’t mind. Also, I remember that in the Philadelphia Transit Plan, published in February 2021, that there was a picture of a British Rail Class 710, which to me suggests they would like to replace their Silverliner V trains with Aventras
@PhilliesNostalgia

This is not to say that I wouldn’t love to see FLIRTs in more places in the US, but to me at least, it seems like SEPTA is going with Aventras, but until they announce they are ordering those trainsets, that would only be what I am assuming they will be ordering
@MarioFanGamer659

From my short research, the KISS is hardly higher than the Silverliner V, they certainly would fit below the catanary (there are KISS trains which are over five metres high but there also are trains around 4.5 metres which is closer to the height of the Silverliner).
@PhilliesNostalgia
2 жыл бұрын
@@MarioFanGamer659 They are only about 5 inches taller on most models compared with the Silverliners, but I think for maintenance reasons (more used to maintaining single deck trains) and SEPTA wanting to create some metro-like Regional Rail lines, I think the Aventra would be a better fit than the KISS
