It’s an amazing character detail with how Otto’s arrogance and ego is explained with that one line: “The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand”. Otto’s not just doing this for the good of mankind, as also evidenced by his refusal to shut down the machine. He’s subconsciously doing it to prove how great his genius is. It’s this very ego that leads him to be corrupted by the arms in the first place. They’re just enhancing this darker side within him. They were programmed by him to solely complete this experiment, and because Otto wanted to complete it at all costs, now they’re gonna force him to in order to fulfill their own purpose.

I think what it is, outside the context of the movie, is women tend to be rather sheltered from men's experiences, our hardships and struggles, only ever seeing the fruit of our labor, seldom the toil, and so there is a pretty big disconnect there that leads women to not understand what an accomplishment of this magnitude represents, much less the blood, sweat, tears that went into building it, or worse, assume it was easy or not that great.
