The Throbbing Gristle album cover was shot on the top of Beachy Head which is/was a famous suicide spot and gives it a whole other layer of irony and resonance.

A few self-corrections: Wire wasn't produced by Mike Hedges, but Mike Thorne. David Byrne left Scotland aged 2; his family moved first to Canada, and then the US when David was 8. And the Frampton Comes Alive album sold 20 million copies worldwide, approximately double the sales of Let's Dance, Bowie's most successful album.

Wonderful tour down memory lane... for me, the only thing you missed was Ultravox's early stuff and particularly Systems in 79... the Magazine covers are wonderful and I don't think I've ever heard that much loving empathy for Mr Devoto

Hey Momus, just saw you today near Karl-Marx Strasse in Berlin. I'm the guy on the bike that screamed "Momus" and you replied while in the scooter 😅 I'm a cinema director from Brazil and also appreciate your music for decades. Let's shoot something together here. I've got lots of cinema equipment with me. Would be great to collaborate with you in a film. Best, Daniel

i grew up in the santa clara valley (silicon valley) and we had college radio stations that played all this music. the best of the bunch (KFJC) even played The Happy Family. i miss the days when semi-professionals and dedicated amateurs could breathe new life into youth and music culture.

I actually did talk about Sulk, and Alan Rankine coming backstage at the first Happy Family gig, in the original draft of this but ended up cutting out the 1982 stuff because it was running a bit long. But yes, what an amazing group! kzitem.info/news/bejne/qaquqG2Nj4yiho4si=8eh9YssJwAn1j_1Q

@@momasu certainly a story worth hearing, Alan and Billy were a magic combination at that point. The beautiful and unholy racket of their Situation Two singles collected in Fourth Drawer Down have stood as one of my all time favorites. May they both RIP

Totally agree about XTC. The only album of theirs I had as 'The Big Express'. Some very interesting arrangements, quirkiness, and energy. But the problem is the vocal and the production - there's just too much of each. It's a very wearing listen and you have to be in the right mood.

Did you pick up Human League's first two LPs (Reproduction and Travelogue)? Think they came out in the time frame you're referring to.
@momasu
Жыл бұрын
No, Dare was my first Human League purchase, and I bought that for my sister because I was a bit embarrassed. But I did see a very early HL concert at The Astoria in Edinburgh. June 14th 1979: "I walked to the Astoria. Sat, drink in hand, watching the crowd until the Human League came on - a very impressive audio-visual presentation, also depressing - cataclysmic world-view." Good slide show!

Never bought them, but I saw Roddy live quite a bit, got to know him personally (charming), and was passed a cassette of the Knife album when it was being recorded, because Malcolm Ross had joined. While I can see that Roddy was precociously talented, songs like Oblivious and We Could Send Letters didn't engage me the way, say, Paul Haig and Davy Henderson's stuff did.

Nick, I would absolutely love you to do a modern version of 'Cities' by Talking Heads. One that maybe reinterprets it from the eastern rather than a western perspective, bringing in Japanese or Korean musicians. No one is doing this at the moment, and we need a cultural geo-reorientation. I feel that if humanity has a future, the answers will be from places like S. Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

I read a great tidbit that Morrissey failed an audition to be lead singer of The Passage…. Dick Witts stating something to the effect of ‘too pouncy’….. Loved the ‘enflame ’ album; especially the track ‘Horseplay’. Witts & Devoto, the masters.
