I did suffer a really big jellyfish sting when I was 15 and since then I always carry just a really small bottle of 20% vinegar acid in my backpack when I go to the beach. 20% vinegar acid destroys the jellyfish nettle that got into your skin. I still got a scar on my wrist because I haven’t treated that spot with that acid, and that was 16years ago. It reminds me of the oceans but if I hadn’t treated the rest, my whole arm would have been a big jellyfish nettle scar.

Fun story: when I was maybe 4 or 5, my family and I went to a beach in Charleston South Carolina. We noticed that there was a purple flag near the life gaurd, but we didn't mind to much about it because we didn't kniw what it ment. Turns out it means that there are potentially dangerous animals in the water like sharks and jellyfish. Fast forward a bit to where a jellyfish tentacle that had detached from the jellyfish had found its way up my swim trunks, landed in that spot where the inner part of the left leg attaches to the rest of my body (so in between my left leg and my penis), and stung me. I got kind of paralyzed for a moment and fell into the water. Once I regained the ability to move shot myself back up to the surface and tried to open my eyes to see what had just happened, but when I did, it stung me again. This happened about ten times until my dad eventually found me and took me to shore.

Experiments have revealed that all stages of the medusae, from newly released to fully mature individuals, can transform back into polyps under the conditions of starvation, sudden temperature change, reduction of salinity, and artificial damage of the bell with forceps or scissors.[3] The transforming medusa is characterized first by deterioration of the bell, mesoglea, and tentacles. All immature medusa (with 12 tentacles at most) then turned into a cyst-like stage and then transformed into stolons and polyps. However, about 20%-40% of mature medusa went into the stolons and polyps stage without passing the cyst-like stage. Polyps were formed after 2 days since stolons had developed and fed on food. Polyps further multiply by growing additional stolons, branches, and then polyps to form colonial hydroids. In the experiment, they would eventually transform into stolons and polyps and begin their lives once again, even without environmental changes or injury.[3] This ability to reverse the biotic cycle (in response to adverse conditions) is unique in the animal kingdom. It allows the jellyfish to bypass death, rendering Turritopsis dohrnii potentially biologically immortal. The process has not been observed in their natural habitat, in part because the process is quite rapid and because field observations at the right moment are unlikely.[3] Regardless, most individual medusae are likely to fall victim to the general hazards of life as mesoplankton, including being eaten by predators or succumbing to disease. The species' cell development method of transdifferentiation has inspired scientists to find a way to make stem cells using this process for renewing damaged or dead tissue in humans.[10] Ecology Genomic analysis Culturing See also References Further reading External links Last edited 14 days ago by GreenC bot RELATED ARTICLES Turritopsis Genus of hydrozoans Turritopsis nutricula Species of hydrozoan Turritopsis rubra Species of small South Pacific hydrozoan

I mean this is a lions mane, not an immortal jelly, but that said ive always hated that they say its biologically immortal as the polyp cant ever become a medusa again. It just produces more in the same way other polyps do- via budding.

I have a pet hypothesis that different people experience jelly stings differently. Some people claim jelly stings like sea nettles are extremely painful, compsring it to getting stabbed, but i used to use bare hands to pick their loose tentacles out of a tank i used to help maintain. Other jelly experts i know also generally say nettles are not bad. Thrn there are thecpeople who say moon jellys are painful, which are entirely painless to me.

STORYTIMEEEEE ok so when i was abt 7 years old my whole moms side of the family went on a family vacation for the summer in north carolina (there were abt 20 of us in total) and the house we rented had a beach near by and we went there at dusk to make a bonfire and fly kites. well there were a couple small dead jellyfish washed up on the shore, but we kinda ignored them bc we weren’t even going in the water anyway. at one point my brother had to use the bathroom and asked me to hold his kite while he was gone, and i was holding on the that kite as if it was my only hope. anyway, my oldest cousin mariah, who was abt 14 at the time, grabbed one of the jellyfish and put it on my shoulder when i wasn’t looking. she didn’t know they could still sting after they died. i screamed bc i felt a rlly hard pinch on my shoulder and watched the jellyfish slide off. i let go of the kite without even realizing it and started crying uncontrollably bc i was only 7. i was ok in the end, mariah felt rlly bad and my brother was mad i let go of his kite
