I hope you had a dew point gauge. I'm an industrial painter red seal. Journeyman painted many Mini many ships in prep. And QC quality control and environmentals are the most important thing. And you only have a certain amount of time after spring primer for a chemical window stewtop coat. I will be buying a bit of a fixer up in the next couple of years for my retirement. And I will go through this steel hole with a fine-tooth-comb. It will last decades. You could have sprayed it with an airless spray gun with a fine finish tip and not used. Hardly any solvents at all.

The industry has been spraying 45 foot comercial fishing boats for years now. Early boats were painted with a very toxic DuPont called Centari. It was also used heavily on trucks because it was a very hard paint. Today they use automotive paints which are harder than the old enamel and acrylic finishes. Hell they cut those fishing boats into peices and add sections to make them wider or higher or longer then finish by painting them. Check out Cory Fords boat shot in PEI Canada to see examples on Facebook.

It’s crazy how much things like that have changed over the years hey? This was the paint our rep recommended that’s designed especially for spraying on steel.

@@WaywardLifeSailing makes it look good. Paints now cure and don't evaporate the solvents so it makes them bond so much better. That said paints don't have the thickness they use to. When I started doing body work you finished your work with 320 grit paper. Paints covered so much. But now its like vinyl siding just the top for looks. My son owns a boat shop here on Prince Edward Island Canada outfiting and wiring the commercial fiberglass fishing boats. Typically 18 feet wide and 45 to 49 feet long. Generally cost between 30 to 60 grand per boat to outfit. Thats all the hydraulics, steering, electronics including auto pilot and navigation. These boats are nice and have all the bells and whistles. Average cost is about 1.2 million. I will look at a few more of your videos for more information on your boat rater than ask questions and pester you. But i do wish you all the best. A fresh painted boat is almost like a blank canvas you can build the boat of your dreams.

@@jimdavison4077 30 to 60 grand doesn’t seem too bad. Our bottom job a few years ago was 25k and that was just repainting the bottom 😂 thanks for your comments! They’re always appreciated.

Hi guys. I've just found your channel. Looks like an awesome project. I also have a steel boat project so there for enjoy watching steel boat refits. Sailing melody, lahakei, odd, elbertros & hipoes to name a few. How ever. A project your size & applying high build paint by spray gun is a hard ask. Another way to spray high build is with an airless sprayer. You will be able to get it on thicker & still get a good Finnish. As for heating the boat, put some electric oil heaters inside the boat. Open all the cupboards in the boat. Sorry, i know too late now, but hay. Next time aye. Keep up the good work 💪 SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿

Welcome to the channel! We were hoping to use an airless sprayer but couldn’t find one without investing a ton of money, this one cost us nothing but paint because it was borrowed from a friend. As for the heaters, again working with limited funds and what we can borrow or put together… we don’t have any electric heaters that would have worked inside the boat or tent. Luckily this should be the last job we really needed to heat a large space for and we have a small electric heater that should be good enough inside the boat for the winter! Thanks for your comment 😌

What a mile stone guy/gal, what a milestone! She looks fantastic, my steel hard chine VdS will never look that good. Why the choice to spray instead of rolling some coat of paint? Is that paint self leveling? Cheers,
@WaywardLifeSailing

thank you! It feels great! this top coat is made to be sprayed on. That along with the huge surface area are the main reasons we chose to spray it! I just spent some time brushing it into the chain locker instead of spraying and I can fully attest no to spraying being the better choice haha
