We actually had a seminar in high school where we had to figure out what we wanted to do in life. We had to put together a portfolio that included action steps to get there and every research we could find on that topic. At the end of the seminar each student hat a 1 hour one on one talk with the teacher to talk about everything. When it was my turn I thought I had failed the seminar (we got graded on the portfolio) because after doing the research and finishing the portfolio I had realised that was in fact not what I wanted to do, so the portfolio didnt march with my choice of career anymore. When I had the talk to my teacher he said I did not fail, in fact, I aced it because I realised that I just made the best decision in my life to not persue a career that wouldnt make me happy in the long run. When I told him I realised all I wanted was to be a mom and have many kids, he told me that that was a valid choice of career if I had the roght partner to accomplish that with. Which I did and still do. The best advice I ever got in my life from anyone. Now 10 years larer I coulndt be happier with my choice.

I agree with this statement so much. One of my big wishes in life if I ever became rich would be to found an organization that would help kids develop an idea of what they want in life (career and life wise) and help them to go about achieving it. To view where you want to be from a multitude of angles and really help them out. It would entail job shadowing and other experiences that would really help them find there way. I guess I've always wanted to do something like this because I my self have felt so very lost for many years. Sorry for my rant but what Jordan Peterson says here really strikes home. If anyone is listening and needing some advice I would say find some people who can help you bounce ideas off of for careers and then the hard part find someone who is truly willing to help you out by puahing and driving you in your path. Let them know when you seem lazy to kick your butt. Not having a career you enjoy in life is miserable, but its far worse when you dont have a career at all.

I think that’s a parental task … Education is (supposed) for teaching you to read, write (comprehension), mathematics, and the sciences, From there you should be able to decipher your own path with parental guidance. The experts continually shy away from parental accountability. We constantly insist that parents don’t need to be accountable for their children.

I don’t think this is a parents’ role at all because many parents are limited by their own exposure when they were growing up. They often don’t understand what the options are, and what the characteristics that make for a good match in a career. Most people drift along, just doing something that they fall into. I had one high school friend who took a job in a law office before she graduated, and she actually never moved on from office work. I’m not saying that’s always going to happen, but it just really looked like she didn’t know how to see beyond those possibilities.

In the late 1960's, I was a kid and both boys and girls were taught that everyone is different, find what you like to do and focus on it. If your good with your hands be a mechanic or secretary. If you are smart be a doctor or nurse or lawyer. Do what you enjoy. In 1972, the opposite was taught, everybody is the same, nobody is different, we are all equal.

Was a vacation last month at a bar on the beach, met this lovely couple from Canada. They had a automotive repair shop and they were telling me how hard it is to find anyone who wants to work in that field. They can't hire Canadians, instead they have largely immigrants working at their shop. The funny thing though is that growing up I recall parents who were mechanics all telling their kids that they needed to go to college so that they could aspire to a life better than what their parents provided them. And now those same people can't find skilled workers to work the very jobs they steered their kids away from.

I'm 46 and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up - so that 'vision' wouldn't work for everyone. i believe primary and secondary schools give kids the broadest education to allow them to specialise later on, if a kid has a specific focus it's up to them and the parents to work on it. You're only in school for a limited time per day, you're out of it more than you're in it.

because all teachers care about these days is the following: 1.) How does my reputation fair between the other staff members of the school, such as my principal/assistant principal, secretary, school nurse, and other teachers? 2.) How will I do on my audit/evaluation? Will it cause a shift in my pay? These are just two or three of the things that cross a teachers mind on a daily basis. Each and every school has at least one or two fantastic and/or outstanding and well-accredited scholars of whom teach for every school and every grade level within/throughout each and every school district in America, the USA specifically.

I did the obligatory 12 years in school (USA) and graduated in 1967. The only purpose was so I would earn a high school diploma. At no time did anyone, including my parents, give me training on what it would be like in the real world. No teaching how to handle money, write checks, balance a check book, how to navigate the myriad activities of adulthood, nor aim me towards an occupation that I would excel at enough to support myself. No teaching about how to interact with other people, or obtain a higher education or even tech school. I could diagram a sentence, perform in our high school band, and eventually obtain a drivers license, but that that was taught to me by a driving school after I graduated. School teachers were only interested in proper behavior, do the homework, be respectful in class and get decent passing grades. Once you were moved up to a higher grade, the previous teachers lost interest in you because they had new students to do the same thing to. After that, I was pretty much tossed into the sea of adulthood without knowing how to swim in it. Muddling through life in civilian and military time, I found a career in the fire service, and later on in life (37) married a wonderful woman who knew how to do the budgeting, checkbook, and the other adult necessities of life. My life would have been a lot easier if any one of those teachers and my parents had taken the time to teach me and my siblings some of that stuff. I could read and write, but not once ever needed algebra, but it would’ve been nice to teach how to change the oil in a car. And I’ve never diagrammed a sentence since graduation!
