Hi, Kate an Nate! "No Abibas" sign means no tracking-running clothing. "No shopping bags sign" looks weird though. And all of these "rules" could actually be illegal.
@nickymoloney4218

I am not sure if you were scammed, but miscommunication of rules and prices FEELS the same as if you were. Whenever restaurants in any country want good publicity, than prices and weight-portion size info laid out should be VERY clear. And there is a problem of a "menu for a foreigner" in some countries. Even if You feel scammed than the service was bad. We are sorry, some of us here...

We did the TransSib journey and Ulan Ude is definitely a worthy stop. We enjoyed our time there. These people made only two stops. We did about 8 stops including Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Khabarovsk and Vladivostok. It is a complete waste of time if you travel this route and not stop at the important places which have plenty to offer. Ulan Ude is not our most favorite stop but we would recommend anyone to stop there for at least 3 days.

Guys, don't feel bad about the extra charge. With meat dishes a lot of the times the price is listed for a unit of 100g to make math easier. Sometimes you may order more than you thought or sometimes it states below that the minimum order is 200 grams or something like that. It usually will show up as an extra item so I can see it being confusing. I am pretty sure it was the ribs. Hope it hasn't soured your experience too much.

1:21 not for Gopniks - it such type of rude people that came from 1990th. They are not sportsmen, but like wear Adidas closes (not original - China's replications - that's why it's aBiBas). They ready to fight (or to be beaten for some reasons) all time (and ready to run fast - when loose fight or if somebody want catch them) - they can specially find reasons for rude from nothing. In 1990th they were just small bandits (thief, junkie, illimitable people) right now it just rude people and some kind of closes filter - not welcome for people in dirty closes. But by Russian law it's ("adidas") not strong restrictions. If somebody came in clear Adidas and have welcome face - it's OK for visit, they will be happy.

2:55 As I can understand - you pay more then it was in price list. That happened because (possibly) cost was for 100 gramm or 1 kilogramm of food, but your portion was bigger then this - they just calculated it proportionally. Very often this system used in food like ribs or something like this that can't be divided by gramms. It's not so right from service quality side, but right from taxes paying after. It's more or less OK.

I wouldn't assume you were taken advantage of just because there was an extra charge...it could be a seating charge, a service or gratuity, or anything! A language barrier will make you automatically think that you've been ripped off, but I don't think that's fair to the locals. Give them the benefit of the doubt..not many people will rip you off like that.
@IrinNovy
7 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I'm Russian and we don't have any automatic extra-charges. So the waiter probably just saw that they couldn't speak Russian and thought they were rich and it was ok to trick them like that. That's disgusting, but unfortunately there are people like that.

Nate didn't understand that meat is sold in weight in many places throughout Europe guess this was his first experience with it or because of the language and Cyrillic writing he feels very unsure about everything and with his natural distrustful nature (no offense but he does) it just adds up to think he got ripped off, was still little high for pork rips but nothing compared to France or Germany. Either way it just sucks that everyone will think that waiter or that restaurant rips people off, not really fair there sir.

That’s why you should always learn how to read the Cyrillic script or at least some basic Russian. I travelled to Ukraine last year and I didn’t face the problem of being ripped off or anything, no mysterious charges on our receipts or on taxi rides, and Ukraine is an Eastern European / former Soviet country just like Russia. Getting ripped off is actually a lot more common in countries such as China, Vietnam etc.; I’m of Chinese descent, I can speak Mandarin Chinese and I’ve been ripped off in China before multiple times because in China they will even try to rip off locals. There is another place in Russia called Kalmykia and its capital Elista, wedged in Kuban between Ukraine and Kazakhstan. It is the only place in geographical Europe that has Tibetan Buddhism as its main religion, and there are many ethnic Oirat Mongols living there, a legacy of the Mongol Empire, basically Mongolians who stayed behind in Europe after the Mongol Empire disintegrated.

Buddhist church «Rinpoche Bagsha» is located in Lysaya Gora, one of the highest and picturesque place in Ulan-Ude. It was set up in 2000 by a venerable Eshe Lodoi Rinpoche and his supporters with the blessing of Dalai Lama IV as a Buryat republican public institution «Tibetan cultural center «Rinpoche Bagsha». In 2002 году it was renamed as Buddhist center Rinpoche Bagsha. Besides religious office services the center delivers training to everybody who would like to learn more about Buddhism. In February 2004 statue of Buddha the largest in Russia and probably in Europe was brought from China and placed in the church. The Russian Squirrels conversation in the outakes cracked me up. My boyfriend was born in Ukraine and one of his first gifts to me was a box of hazlenut chocolates called "bilochka" I believe (my cyrillic keyboard is not working) and it had a squirrel on the box top and he made up this whole crazy story about how Ukranian squirrels are made of chocolate 🤣.

How did that squirrel not make it into the main video? How many hundreds of thousands of people have watched this video and missed the adorable squirrel because they thought the video was over! Tragedy!

In fact they were not taken advantage of. They just did not have a clue... Sometimes it is better to stay humble and give them the benefit of the doubt than crying for no reason. Very inpolite being in the wrong and start a discussion when dining out.

I’m sympathetic! I hate pigeons after Venice... My sister thought it was funny to walk in front of me in those tight alleys and scare the pigeons so they flew up in my face! I’m now terrified of pigeons...
