To cut down on plastic, you should avoid shopping in big supermarkets. Try buying fruit and veg from a farmer's market or use one of those services that deliver fruit and veg baskets every week. Every little helps - buying seasonally, buying local produce and buying less meat are little ways we can lessen our carbon footprint.

From what I've seen the UK is the worst for plastic. Why do you need bananas wrapped in plastic? They have a skin. It's rediculous
@Jen-dm7tl
5 жыл бұрын
You could easily make different lifestyle choices to avoid all the plastic, shop from the loose fruit and veg section or farm shops and take your own brown paper bags, get your meat from the deli counter where they wrap in paper. Order milk and juice from farmers where they arrive in glass bottles, and when your done with them they’ll take them away, clean and reuse them. Buy your bread from the bakery. May cost a little more, but if you can afford it then why not. When ordering online there should be a bag less option too (there is for Tesco and Asda) x

How did we get here with all of this pastic packaging? Jonathan asks. Well let's see hmm... over-industrialization and capitalism with the power being given to all the big multi concerns which caused small independents including small farmers grocers etc to go out of business because they couldn't keep up. So now massive mass production has taken over- not yet everwhere, but a lot. I live in Amsterdam and shop at organic supermarkets where the farmers bring daily fresh fruit and vegetable in huge crates; but still there is some plastic packaging which our supermarkets are discouraging and campaigning against .Don't you have any of that near you, at least organic butcher shops or produce places? And sorry Jonathan, I know you love Amazon, but aside from not paying any taxes and low wages to their employees, they are ;strangling out what's left of small time shops and businesses. Sooo, that's my take on what might have been a very rhetorical question from Jonathan. Thanks for the video. Everyone get well.

There are local farmers and market farmers who offer weekly deliveries of vegetables and things. I'm sure they would be fairly easy to find in your area. And the veg is likely organic too. You can also find locally sourced meats who deliver. If you do find them and like them, I'm sure people would really appreciate recommendations. Also just making the conscious effort to support eco-friendly brands and brands and stores that are making the effort to be more sustainable. On top of that making the effort to take a reusable shopping bag into the store with you whenever you go shopping. I keep a basket in my car that is overflowing with reusable bags, so I can just reach back and grab them.
@rebeccaward9365

Now to combat the plastic issue we go to the store ourselves and buy the fruits and vegetables individually and either put them in small reusable bags or not in bags at all and they are just loose. You can still buy them in packs in plastic but it’s actually cheaper to buy them individually. We can also buy dry goods in most grocery stores from bins that we put in mason jars, like rice, oats and beans. It’s pretty easy to get rid of most plastics if you think about it.
