Such a beautiful (and devastating - with a bit of hope) story. It was also queer. So glad that they got the opportunity to bring their vision to life, and didn't have it destroyed by networks/studios. Fantastic work all around. In Australia you can watch it on Binge :)

It is so sad that we all are so scared from media in general that absolutely none of us trusted or believed in what was so very clearly romantic development. I mean, they weren't subtle, like at all. Thinking about it just drives me insane. We deserve better and we finally got it

I read an interview of David Jenkins a couple of days ago who said a similar thing. He said that he literally wrote a classic romantic moment in moonlight, where one of the characters takes a step forward to kiss the other but hesitates, they walk away and turn around to look at each other, it's all so cliché rom-com behaviour, how could any of us ever doubt it? We did because we've been fooled before, too many times. Where such behaviour between characters of the same gender (especially men) is either blatantly denied (justified as affectionate friendship) or played for laughs. This show destroyed queerbaiting so easily. And don't even get me started on how perfect that non-binary rep is.

It's the most effortless, best rep I have ever seen. I cannot find the words to explain how much this show means to me. I love that the creators didn't even consider it a big deal, they wanted to make a pirate rom com and pirates where historically gay, so the show would be gay too. It means everything to me.
@UzUMaK1-Lee
2 жыл бұрын
I love that Waititi and the writers didn't even feel the need to acknowledge and point out the pirates being gay or poc in and around 1700s europe. Like, there was, never once, any type of homophobia or racism displayed by any of the pirates - even Izzy, who's practically one of the big bads, and Mary, who was MARRIED to Stede. When he told her he had fallen in love with a guy, she didn't even question it. I find that amazing. Pirates were inherently gay and very diverse ethnically, but I'm so tired of people and the media acting like they weren't. This show definitely defied that, and it didn't even feel like forced representation or pandering. And it's also the first romcom I've seen where the main couple actually has *chemistry,* and not only that, but the other couples have more than pretty much any romance in any big romance show or movie I've seen.
@pn5894
2 жыл бұрын
YES!! my heart was beating so fast when Mary said "what's her name?" because even though all the previous episodes were wonderfully accepting of sexuality, I thought _this_ would finally be the moment when homophobia reared its ugly head. Then when she decided to smile and hug him instead, I fully cried. They could have made Mary a villain, but they didn't, and it is yet another thing that made this show so fucking perfect.

okay to be fair, there were select instances of racism and possibly homophobia, but there certainly werent the focus/main idea. for example, when the crew sits down to eat with the british, they make some racist remarks against the black crew members, but they are instantly attacked with extreme prejudice by the other crew members. and on a few different instances, blackbeard gets called a donkey and some other racist terms used against Maori people (the actor is Maori so it stands to reason the character is, too) its implies that part of what made black beard feel uncivilized/looked down apon during that fancy party was him being native, as well as poor. so racism wasnt ignored, it was just used minimally and often as comedic relief and not as trauma porn.

I had complete faith in Taika. I don't think he'd ever be part of something that queerbaited in the way we have been in the past (Sherlock, Supernatural). I knew from the second Ed was watching Stede sleep that it was gonna be a romance, and I was so glad it happened. I would like to see someone do a comparative video though. Compare these genuine canon scenes to scenes of queerbaiting, just so people can understand how severe the manipulation of queer audiences was in the recent past. It really has had such a huge impact on our community that when a bunch of us saw this obvious romance, and our first reaction was fear instead of joy.
@jessicawanyan9785

5:56 I'm never going to get over the fact that it's not even only because Stede rejected him. It's because he genuinely viewed it as proof that no one wants Edward around. Like, after Ed gave up the life of piracy with the act of grace, that was truly the first time he was ever entirely free of the Blackbeard facade, like even his actual beard was gone. And he showed Stede the most vulnerable, unblackbeard-like parts of himself and then was promptly left behind. And then he was on the way to healing as Ed, back on the ship, and Izzy, one of the people he's known the longest told him in no uncertain terms that he hates Edward, that he wants Blackbeard back. I don't blame him for taking those two interactions as confirmation that no one wants who he actually is. So he dealt with it by giving the world exactly who he thinks they want to see.

Honestly it felt like one of the most genuine depictions of romance I've seen put to screen in a while, gay or straight. I was spoiled about how there was a romantic arc between Stede and Ed before I watched, but I honestly expected the show to primarily play it up for comedy, like in a "isn't it so weird and funny how we got these two middle-aged men to perform scenes that only straight romantic leads in romcoms would typically do" sort of way, like a lot of other comedies starring two men in a close relationship. I was completely swept away by how much thought seemed to be put into forming a genuine bond from the very beginning on both the writers' and the actors' sides. It works brilliantly on both a macro (i.e. tying into themes and character arcs) and micro (i.e. the small moments or interactions that often feel improvised or decided by Rhys and/or Taika) level, and I often find that a lot of fictional romance only really nails one or the other, if either at all.

I know if I'd have watched the show without knowing I'd have gotten really anxious and upset and yes I would be very relieved and ecstatic by episode 9 I still think knowing helped me enjoy the show so much more. My eldest who just identifies as queer was reluctant to even let go and enjoy it the first time we watched it, because she initially assumed the Ed/Stede relationship was queerbaiting, and was beyond done with that whole thing, I too assumed they were going to veer off into bromance territory. The chemistry is INSANE! You can tell so clearly that taika and rhys are good friends and honestly their dynamic is what sold the romance. It's always a double edged sword, isn't it? When a series or film just knocks it out of the park with great writing, mature intelligent inclusion of diversity, and a relevant critique of current societal problems. It's amazing and exciting. But then it makes everything else just seems dull by comparison. The raising of standards is a good thing in the long term. But in the meantime we sit waiting for such quality to appear again.

I have so many emotions about this show because for the first time I have not only NOT been queerbaited, but also (and you phrased it perfectly) their personalities/identities and character arcs don’t revolve around their queerness, they just “happen to be” queer. Like, Ed and Stede’s relationship is intrinsic to the show, but (like you said) it is not being used for the plot as in they struggle with their identities. They just are. Everyone is accepted. The discord is sewn for reasons other than two men loving each other, or a person using they/them pronouns. And it’s amazing, and it’s something that I didn’t think I would ever see in media but now that I have I can’t live without it. Pretty much just repeated what you said just in a less eloquent manner, but I hope I got my point across without horribly misrepresenting my thoughts!

I've grown up loving Taika and Rhys's work. Since flight of the concords show first began I have loved these kiwis to the moon and back, some of my most favourite memories with my father were binge watching Taikas movies. Boy being a heart-wrenching classic, so I was absolutely thrilled to see a comedy drama between the two as blackbeard and stede bonnet. And then blown out of my mind when I realised it was actually going to go for the romance, no queerbaiting in sight. Their serious acting at times blew me away, and it was unfiltered adoration sent between the two that I was not expecting to see acted on screen. These guys are fucking fantastic. The writers too. Its so heart-warming seeing people I've looked up to since I was a kid act such a queer romance with no hesitation, truly embracing it.

Agree 100% with absolutely everything you said. I feel like I've been waiting my whole queer life for a show like this. The only, ONLY concern I have is that HBO Max hasn't actually announced a second season (as of right now, middle of April, 2022), so we don't know for sure we're actually getting one. I mean, it's certainly set up to lead into another season. That ending was obviously a cliffhanger, a conflict waiting to be resolved, and it's a good conflict, a necessary one even: Stede needed closure with his family and renewed conviction in himself and his choices, while Ed needs to contend with how much of his life he really wants to spend/waste on playing a part that he's admitted he resents. Plus...they'll have to deal with what they've done to each other, Stede abandoning Ed at the worst possible moment, and Ed leaving Stede's found family to die on a tiny island. If we don't get a second season and the show ends without any resolution, gotta be honest, I'll be crushed. I'll still be forever thankful that such a beautiful queer story is allowed to exist in this world, but ending it there would be a huge letdown.

HBO put almost no money into marketing and promotion, yet this show is their most watched show for the past month. Because season 1 was also relatively low budget compared to other HBO shows, the profits they are receiving from OFMD must be HUGE. Therefore, it would be stupid for them to not renew a second season. I think the only reason news hasn't come out about it yet is because they need to update contracts, raise wages, create schedules, etc. Also, getting the audience riled up for a couple months before releasing the news would be good for them as well, marketing-wise. Hopefully, this eases some of your anxieties about this!

One of my favorite things about the show is that we get to see this beautiful love story between two middle aged queer men. A lot of people are highlighting the queer representation (as they should!) but one thing that struck me was the representation of the people of color. They were never viewed as "lesser" by the crew, but at the same time it isn't a completely utopian society. Racism exists. We see the British Navy viewing the people of color as "slaves" and that one guy calling Roach "darkie", but those people are held accountable, and ultimately killed/maimed/etc. Additionally, there is the subconscious bias of Stede viewing the natives as "savages" at first and the commentary on how white people have ruined the lives of natives. We also see the French people in ep5 exoticize and view Oluwande and Frenchie as the "exception" to other Black people as they are well-spoken. Basically, racism exists in this world (albeit in a much milder way than it actually was in 1717) but the people of color _always_ have the upper hand. In the first episode, Frenchie and Roach and the other POC on the ship have weapons and turn on the British Navy as soon as they are threatened, ultimately keeping two of the British people as hostages. In the second episode, we see the natives have the power over the white people of Stede's crew, and their release was completely on the natives' terms. In episode 5, Olu and Frenchie con the frenchmen and get their money, releasing the African servants in the process. There are several more examples which I won't get into, but ultimately, the representation of the people of color in this show is magnificent and showcases how a show can include realistic themes of racism while simultaneously allowing these characters to be dynamic, strong, and equal (or more powerful in some cases!) to their white counterparts.

So I was thinking about the way they play out the metaphor of piracy being toxic masculinity. They don't really focus so much on the gay thing. It's more about the perception that gay = emasculation = female = weak. It's focusing on the inextricable nature of the sexism inherent in homophobia and transphobia. Izzy is clearly a case of internalized homophobia because he links it with being soft and vulnerable. He idolizes the queer Blackbeard, but he targets Lucius for harassment because Lucius' gender expression doesn't conform to society's idea of a proper man. Calico Jack is similar, but slightly different in that he also puts a lot of stock in being a proper pirate/man, but has come to the conclusion that being gay is fine as long as you maintain that aggressive masculinity. Even the concerns about Jim not being cis male revolve around ridiculous sexist ideas about women, but that's quickly resolved because they all agree that they're experience with Jim disproves that nonsense. I love that the queer characters are just written/acted well as characters, not making queerness their defining trait. But I also love that a main theme of the show is showing how damaging societal pressure to conform to gender rolls is.

This show is fantastic in all facets. It never points a finger at the audience, it just tells a story. It never felt preachy about what was happening, it was just matter of fact, and it never felt forced. And I say this as someone who is really tired of identity politics. It's a beautiful story about, ultimately, two people who fall in love. It's not even about sexual attraction, it's about love between two people, full stop. Sex and gender simply don't matter here, which I think is important. We're all just people and we love who we love. What bits are between your legs are far less important. I've never bothered to quantify what I am by any label because my romantic and sexual preferences just aren't that big of a part of who I am, and I felt that attitude very much reflected in this show, but never while actually watching, only in retrospect. I think too often love and intimacy are conflated with sex. Intimacy can be something as simple as feeling ok to cry in front of a friend. It's vulnerability. And you can love your family and your pets and hopefully sex is never involved... lol... as two examples of the nuance of the two terms. 8/10 because the show has some flaws, but those flaws are entirely forgettable. Mostly ludicrous plot points but it's a goofball pirate comedy 90% of the time, so nothing to really dig into.
