You and Michelle are a really good example of how two people can live a pretty nice lifestyle in the Philippines for less than a $1000. It certainly can be done. One thing you pointed out that I really like is that it can be MORE expensive to live a western lifestyle here in the Philippines. But I have never understood why someone would totally want to do that.

Nice co-sponsored video. I've become familiar with the Philippines over the last 5 years and visited twice. I really love it. I think your video is realistic, it was good for itemizing things to help people get an idea. The only thing I would bring up is it also depends on where you live. A big city like Manila will def cost more even living a filipino lifestyle compared to a more rural "Province." $1,000 a month is real and people budget, but may spend more initially as a Westerner feels the place out, learns where to find deals and gets acclimated from a Western lifestyle to a Philippines lifestyle. It REALLY helps to already know someone there you can trust. Thanks again for the great video.

living on a budget is good but within the budget, you must allow yourself to have the flexibility to enjoy, endulge yourself with a good meal and vacation trip beyond your local area, not a trip to local parks or beaches. living here or anywhere in the world is no different, make your life well rounded and the ability to do and enjoy life to the fullness. if not then you are just transforming from one rat box to another. anything is possible , careful and mindful budgeting will get you there

My uncle lives in Darwin Australia. The weather is almost the same as in the Phils. He noticed that having his a/c on whenever he was in his office seemed to prolong the life of his computers. No a/c and his computers would pack it in after about 12-16 months. Gone through 3 computers in the last 4 years. His current computer is about 6 years old and still running strong. The heat really kills your computer... So try to keep them cool. Now as for smoking, I started vaping 21 months ago and NEVER looked back. I mix my own juice which brings my cost down to about AUD$30... And that's for me and the wife. But one thing I noticed when in the Phills earlier this year was that vaping in the Phils is rather expensive.... SO if you're trying to save money, as crazy as it is. It's cheaper to smoke ciggies than vape in the Phils.

Based on what you have just revealed expenses for two people living in the PHILIPPINE particularly in Dumaguete City is averaging to $1,000 to 1,200 a month. My wife and I are retired working in the USA for 40 years. We received a US social security pension both totals to $5,000 after Federal and state taxes. We both have our 401k retirement savings from our previous employers and are invested on US Stock Market stock growth and dividends annually gross at $100,000 if we lived in the PHILIPPINES we are well off. We are both FILIPINO ancestry but are Naturaiized US Citizens and hold US Passports

That's really a good price on total cost of food (groceries + eating out). I only eating out 2-3 times a month and I'm spending $250-300/monthly on just myself in San Jose, Ca. (I'm only $130lbs)

When I first moved here or to Dipolog city I air conditioned the whole house the first month. And it was 4000 more than the rent which was 16,000. It was a big nice two story house though. And numerous family members come into town and stayed with us, due the engagement I guess lol! The electric costs went down to averaging 10,000 to 12,000 after everyone finally found there way home.

Ned there was a time in the oil field in the Gulf of Mexico that they would required people working to have these reflective spots on the clothing to be spotted easier from the air. When people had to evacuate a platforms the barracuda's would all go crazy thinking the "reflective patches" were game fish and the result was not pretty. I have personally caught cuda over 8 foot long offshore, now imagine that latching onto your arm :(

Thanks for your update - Interesting breakdown of your expenses. I thought Cebu broadband was expensive; guess not. Went with 5Mbps Globe DSL Broadband and it's 1299.p a month, including a "free" landline phone. Plenty fast for emails, Facebook, KZitem, etc. Had Smart 4G LTE pocket wifi and it was a total joke from 7am to about 10pm - nothing would load. I spend almost double in USD a month than you do (Cebu vs Dumaguete), but $200 of that is rent and the rest is eating out and groceries, plus a budget of about $100-150/month to help various family members (lots of hospital visits recently; her dad is now in his 70's). I want to check out Dumaguete, as I've read and seen some nice things about the area. Thanks again for you updates.

+Philippine Dreams you would have to set up a none invasive system. like a portable system that you can plug into an outlet with a back flow preventer. I make use of a small portable system mostly to low my bill. my bill before was P5,100. now its P3,600. I have 2 apartments. a downstairs and an upstairs. P3,000 each. the downstairs is my store and the upstairs is my home. as for your smoking, if you want to quit or reduce, then try a vaporizer. a good vape pen will run you about P2,500 - P3,500. the e-liquid is around P150 - P300 a bottle. pay close attention to how much nicotine is in it. moderate the heavy smoker I suggest 18mg - 24mg. I'm a smoker myself. if you want to save money on food, laundry, house cleaning products, and personal care products I suggest going to your local wholesale before going anywhere else. its not like the u.s. you can go to the wholesale as a regular customer. just get at least 5 or more of each item.

Yes, you can get very good apartments here anywhere in the Philippines for low cost. Low cost means to me 10,000 to 15,000 pesos or $215 to $320....even in an expensive area like Makati. Although doing that in Makati is not as easy. As far as Davao City, you will have no problems finding good inexpensive apartments in areas that you would probably like.

Hi Ned, nice vid, thanks for sharing. I am thinking moving with my family (2 toddlers included) for like 12-18 months, before they start school. Any recommendation on where to go? We are looking for something quiet, but not isolated and safe for the kids. Love, Luis

Hi Ned. Are you still tracking about 1,000-1100 USD this year as well? I am making my plans to move over this summer and I am trying to gather as much information as I can. Right now I am trying to decide between Davao, Cebu, or Dumaguete.... Love your videos......

Nathaniel Kidd You can try both Cebu and Dumaguete because it's just one island hop. It will only take you 2000.00 pesos for the land fare. Also those two have beautiful places. If you need some help or you have questions, maybe I can help you.

Jilien Adanza thank u. It's good to know Dumaguete and Cebu are so close. My plan is to move there from California in November. Are you familiar with a typical budget needed for those areas? Thanks for responding

In Dumaguete I'm familiar because that's the city of my province where I grew up, I've been in Cebu also because I took up my exam last year and I think I will compare all the expenses it's quite similar.

I really enjoy your off the cuff style personally I would freeze up. in Canada I have a roommate. he pretty much takes care of all the bills plus $500 months. find the living 6 months out of the year in Southeast Asia. I don't need much I used to live on a sailboat. all I really need is a room in a window. this sounds bad but I'd like to find some expats. who set up the house and a couple of rooms. and be their roommates. something very simple just as long as it's my secure while I was in the Philippines I met people coming through my window trying to borrow my laptop. there's a strength in having someone watch your back. an AC unit in a tiny room with a throwaway scooter. I'm very much a minimalist my big one is the internet's my fingers twitching really bad without I could probably live in Jipne I have livedin them before there's lots of room for all my junk now that I think about it that's actually a good idea. thank you very much for your book it's great to see your perspective oh yeah and your composition the photos fantastic cheers Nick

Hey Kids! Ned I have a question... I switched to vaping on my 60th birthday... Do they have vape stores their? Can I get my juice there or online? Is there a Filipino Amazon or a good online store there? How is the mail there as far as getting packages when ordering online? Thanks! I hope to spend the whole month of March checking out a few places to retire like Tagaytay and Baguio... I am like you... I want to stay COOL! ;)

I'd love to see a photo of you... I have never seen a big hairy asshole with legs and arms... and if it's any of your business why I am moving to the PI is because of economics. I am a disabled VN Vet and live off of 1,100.00 usd a month and I truly believe I could do better over there then barely squeaking out an existence here in the USA. So go crawl back into the Troll Hole you came out of and let us carry on a civil conversation. BTW Ned I am glad you got off the cigs like I did. I can truly feel the difference and I actually enjoy it a lot more then those nasty things... No more stinky breath, clothes, hair, well at least for me... ;) Cheaper too... Over here it is at least. Probably cost more to vape over there then to smoke huh? When yours go for a buck a pack and ours go for 7 to 10 bucks depending on where ya live...

jetinfectors.com/ the VA is bucking this just like they did Agent Orange... But slowly they are starting to fucking start to take some responsibility for this crap... Many have died waiting just like AO... :( I was lucky... I got a liver and it's still working... :)

Yes I joined in 74. It was all but done... I didn't even go in country so actually I should have said VN Era Vet. Now the stink is from cigs that I was referring to. Peace... Oh BTW I have an appeal to get 100% disability (for the Hep-C I got in boot camp from the air injections which caused me to get a liver transplant 3 years ago hcvets.com/data/occupational/munji/toc.htm ) which would make me a rich man! 3Gs a month! I could go buck wild in the PI on that Huh? Plus the 3 year wait I have been doing to get an answer is a nice retro bank account if I win... May the Gods be with me...

So how much money can you put away for your emergency fund, medical, flights, or any unplanned circumstance ?
@PhilippineDreams

Never enough. If someone is moving here, they should have tens of thousands of USD stashed away for emergencies. Just my opinion, though as some guys come here with not a heck of a lot.
