There is no doubt you guys experienced some serious cold. We just posted our freeze report video for the three freezes we experienced here in Lakeland and it looks like you guys got hit harder than we did. I'd be surprised if you guys got a rebloom on most of your mangoes. I'm pretty sure it's true about leaves falling off is a good sign. If the branch dies the leaves will not fall off but there maybe lower thicker branches with life still. Very surprised that this level of cold hit you guys.

@@SulcataGrove we were still hit hard enough. The night you guys got hit was the easiest on us as we had a strange warm pocket settle over our area that night that was above freezing. Our worst nights was a freeze a week before that was a surprise and the night after the freeze you got hit by. Next year I will have overhead irrigation for freeze protection on all my tropicals.

@@SulcataGrove I think one of the differences is we had more cold than you did previous to these events. Trees will toughen up if exposed to some cold but if they get hit with a sudden cold they are not used to they aren't ready for it.

I see Chris from Truly Tropical posted a video 10 days ago on What to Do After the Mango Cold Damage. Interesting. Here in the warmer Downtown Metro Phx, AZ, we "usually" hit freezing at least once a yr--maybe "on average" at least 50% of the time--but not this yr ! So sorry to see !!

We should have pruned earlier. We listened to advice online instead of our own gut instinct. The trees kept looking worse and worse and borers attacked many trees. Now we are in salvage mode. Lesson learned.

@@SulcataGrove This just a suggestion and if you have place to store things! Maybe you can get big rolls of plastic, some long pieces of lumber and make a frame by stapling the pastic and wrap it around the trees to keep the freezing wind out! Let it be about 1 feet away from the trees. Maybe it sounds like a crazy idea but I saw a family in Seattle did this, the winters are milder than other states and there is hardly any snow! But they made their tents like a Tepee! So it was secured at the top is it snowed! Just my crazy thoughts and ideas😊

I think we all make the mistake of "orchard style" planting of tropical trees. The best method is to plant them just like they are found in nature "jungle style" with just enough space for air circulation. Stack them in there and they will protect each other from not only the extreme cold, but the extreme heat. A good canopy is required, because as we see in this video. All the years of beautiful trees can take a major step back with one hard cold front.
