The EJ20 Forester is surely one of the unsung heroes of Australian motoring. It makes sense that it’s engine and driveline underpin this rebuild of the legendary Brumby. My first Subaru was a manual 1998 Forester bought in 2012. I was the third owner and it had travelled 210,000km at that point. Apart from needing a new clutch the interior was spotless and the body straight and everything was original. I bought it as a second car mainly to drive to and from the train station. However it quickly became the family work horse and spare car towing a trailer to and from Canberra, moving furniture, towing a boat, working on construction sites and as a daily driver commuting across Sydney. For 2 years it was the third car in my driveway because I just didn’t want to sell it. After 9 years and 120,000k the Forester moved on to another owner. It was a ridiculously good and reliable car and a simple car to work on. After that Subaru experience I bought an XV, then another Forester and then another Forester for my daughter. I’ll have to buy a ticket in that Brumby!

My dad’s first Subaru was a BRAT (I’m in the USA), and he basically only ever bought Subarus after that (and minivans, to fit the whole family of six for longer trips - for shorter trips I’d just lay down in the back of the station wagon). I loved seeing that intro. So many incredible pieces of history. I grew up with computers, not posters, and many of those cars were the wallpaper of my computer growing up. My brother still drives our grandpa’s Brat, and we have another we’d like to restore for me to drive as well. So many memories in those cars.

That story from Marty is it for me. brought in to the Subaru fold at age 5 with the family car, Uncle getting a WRX and followed by Dad getting one too. Growing up with Subaru really is the way you get hooked on their special formula, and back in 90s Australia, there wasnt much else like a WRX. Would always blow the doors off your basic Commo or Falcon and in my opinion, looked more aggressive in styling. Nobody even knew about bonnet scoops back then, they were completely unique for the time.

You can really tell how personal this journey has been. Road safety is an invaluable cause to me as a motorcyclist, bicyclist, and driver … while that cause is universally important for any person with loved ones on the road, Subarus are uniquely cherished as safe everyday practical vehicles that are fun to take into the wilderness for decades. I think the idea of not throwing something away once it’s had a certain number of miles is also valued; as at least in the United States a higher portion of Subaru vehicles remain in the road than others after ten, twenty, thirty years’ time. This build was really special not just because of what it represents and means to Marty, but because it shows really earnestly what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

MCM. Guys' you did make a remarkable and gorgeous but capable small car/truck out of that gem you discovered in a shed. They are Internationally ubiquitous workhorses of transport. A local farmer bought one near our family when the second model of the ute was released and he caned it merrily. Sometimes seen virtually paddling itself through bog with fifteen hay bails in the bin and that little engine revving as fast as possible. Iconic. Not titled Brumby here in NZ. .refered to as Subaru utes and wagons mostly. Within the scope of my Subaru ownerships I know that is a very capable and brilliant vehicle that will definitely impress the next private owner. I am passionate over Legacy turbo cars myself.
