@@AbiSaysThings Ha ha, yes true! The traditional style of Egyptian shimmy is tiny, delicate, and thigh-generated, but the newer Egyptian style is large and exuberant using the knees to propel it. Then you have other African countries, where there are infinite shimmy variations- feet wide apart, feet together, knees bent, knees straight, and they're all beautiful!

Hula looks similar but is quite different. In hula, feet are together and planted firmly on floor. Upper body does NOT move, knees are bent for bigger hip motions but it is supposed to be driven from the hips which is how they can swing on the floor without their legs apart like the lady on the right side.

Look up videos of that dance, then look at hula videos, and compare both to the 2 shimmies that are wonderfully shown in this video. I promise you’ll immediately see a BIG obvious difference. 😂 Also, considering Hawaii’s history and the near-loss (at one point) of hula altogether, I completely understand why anyone who does hula-especially hula kahiko-would want to correct and educate others who confuse hula with anything else.

@@purpleiciclesPlease don't tell someone correcting a common misconception about their culture to "chill". That's like if I corrected someone mispronouncing my name on how to say it correctly and then a bystander told me to "chill". Cultural identity can be incredibly personal, especially if it is from a culture which has been historically oppressed by colonization.
