Hula looks similar but is quite different. In hula, feet are together and planted firmly on floor. @@bunnydimples1283 Huh, I didn’t think she was very rude with her correction. I do think you and another commenter might be confusing hula with ori Tahiti though. Look up videos of that dance, then look at hula videos, and compare both to the 2 shimmies that are wonderfully shown in this video. I promise you’ll immediately see a BIG obvious difference. 😂 Also, considering Hawaii’s history and the near-loss (at one point) of hula altogether, I completely understand why anyone who does hula-especially hula kahiko-would want to correct and educate others who confuse hula with anything else.

@@purpleiciclesPlease don't tell someone correcting a common misconception about their culture to "chill". That's like if I corrected someone mispronouncing my name on how to say it correctly and then a bystander told me to "chill". Cultural identity can be incredibly personal, especially if it is from a culture which has been historically oppressed by colonization. This channel is dedicated to educating on decolonizing and the diversity of dance. Please don't disrespect the creator by trying to silence others doing the same in comments.

I like practicing both shimmies. The knee shimmy is the one that feels more natural to me because i can do it without thinking. But the tanzania/congo shimmy from the obliques..... that shimmy is the challenging one for me. When i do it i think I'm doing it right when my obliques feel fatigued and i see the shimmy comes from my middle rather than my knees. I feel fluid with the knee shimmy. I feel like I'm working out with the oblique shimmy. It's no joke but i keep practicing! I will get my shimmies down!
