The sanctuary is named after the Bhadra River, which serves as its lifeline. Commonly referred to as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary, after the nearby village, it was designated as a Project Tiger reserve. In addition to tigers, the area is an excellent location for spotting and observing various mammals, reptiles, and over 250 bird species, many of which are unique to the Western Ghats. The state-run Jungle Lodges & Resorts operates the River Tern Lodge, situated on a hillock by the Bhadra reservoir, close to Lakkavali and just adjacent to the northern boundary of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve.
