I dont know what brand outboard motor you have but according to my knowledge all cylinder must fire regardless at idle or high RPM.

Thanks, Tony. I have Mercury Force 120hp. They all will spark only during staring, then the switch will keep 2 off on idle or low rpm to make the boad able to move slow, then will turn on again when rpm reaches 2000 or above. I believe all Mercury 2 strokes with carburators do that. Lot of discussions on Mercury group about this issue. Thank you for your comment. Appreciate it.

@@NorCalOutdoor did you ever confirm this? i have a 2 stroke merc 3 cylinder and having some problems. noticed when i pulled the middle and bottom spark plug while idling, nothing happens, as soon as i pull the top plug, motor dies. so not sure if i have 2 cylinders not firing or its just 2 of them arent activated until a certain rpm

@@kirkkohd4883 hi Kirkkoh. Yes, mine does that and saw other people having same problem, but looks like it is normal.

Is that the way your motor works from the factory with only 2 cyl. until a certain rpm? I know they tried that with a car years ago. I have a 4 cyl force I don't think mine is like that..

Not sure if it is for 2 stroke engine only or for specific model only. I read that before, it is to give low rpm. I think I need to test it again.

NEVER run your engine above idle with water muffs on
