For anyone looking at this old video I figured out why tapping it works. As mentioned in comments below the brushes are not contacting the armature. My merc 90hp has 4. 2 were all the way back not touching anything. Stuck bad. Third was stuck but touching shaft. 4th was good. Tapping made 3rd one touch enough to make it go with the 4th so 2/4 touching. Always slow and not reactive. I cleaned brushes and freed them up with wd40 and wire brush. Greased top washer on motor shaft and reassembled. Not only was it free it’s really fixed for a long duration now. Should last years and if sputters again I know 4 bolts and 30min time it’ll be fixed again.

I had the Wife Unit work the switch and I tapped the motor 2 times and it went down. Just got back from 2 wonderful hours on the lake. Thanks so much for your help and video. YIPPEE

Mine stopped working a couple weeks ago while on the water. When I got home, I took the trim motor off of the boat, took it apart and found that the brushes were clogged with dust debris which was keeping the brush springs from working properly as intended and therefore the brushes were not making contact with the commutator. So, I cleaned it out really well, reinstalled and it is back working properly.

Hey I want to thank you for this simple fix, just like a old starter and solenoid on a car. Smack it and it works. I bought a new relay and it worked 5 times and stopped. I was asked by Amazon to rate the product and I gave it a poor rating. Ordered 2 new ones. Installed new one and same click noise. I watched your video and within 2 hammer taps it started working. Now I feel bad for slamming the seller of the previous solenoid… 😓 Thanks again for helping newbies like me!

Yo, me and my wife went into shallow waters without any notice and when I went to lift the moter we were already in too deep 😂. We managed to slowly make our way out and the motor got stuck up. We started going through our phones and I was the only one with 1 bar of reception out there. I managed to get this video up and mam you fng saved us out there. Later on our way back to the dock about 45 min out we ran out of gas with no reserve 😂 my wife started freaking out 😅 so I called the us boating tow company, they wanted $700.00 to go out there and bring me gas. We started flagging every one down but only 1 actually stopped and helped us. Carlos, God bless this man. He went out of his way to help us, brought us gas about 2 hours later and we went on about our business but wait... we still have to get this boat off the water 😂. We get to the dock and the trailer was in too deep that it started to float so it wouldn't line up with the boat 😂. Me and my wife are at the 😂 dock looking so stupid but we had each other's back. We finally get the boat on but the motor is stuck again so we have to drag it off that way 😔 scraping the road and park away from everyone to bang on that part until finally getting the motor up 😂. What an adventure. Wife's first time on the water with me 😂, I may be fishing alone for a while 😂.

So when it started clicking and you did not get any trim, did you just loosen your hydraulic screw and then lift the motor up by hand and put it on the kickstand? Because that just happened to me the other night putting it on the trailer it would not trim up, so I had to loosen the hydraulic screw to release the pressure and then me and a buddy had to pick the motor up by hand and put it down on the kickstands, and then I tighten the hydraulic screw back down! And mine is doing the same thing when I hit the trim, it's just clicking, and I've already done the test on the relay by trying to bypass it by taking the wires off and touching them both to the red wire on the relay and it's not going down or up. But you can hit the trim button on the side of the motor or my blinker trim or the trim that's on my throttle and the only thing it does is click, I haven't tried tapping on the motor yet. Because I was hoping to God that it was just a bad relay / solenoid.. but I was just wondering if you did the same trick by loosening the hydraulic screw so that you could pick it up by hand and put it on the kickstands? And if you did, when you replace or trim motor make sure to put more hydraulic fluid back in the hydraulic fluid housing. So it doesn't burn up your new motor!
@boatvibes
2 жыл бұрын
Yes it was just clicking,yes I loosened up the screw release pressure, picked up the engine on the kick stand, tightened the screw up back up, tapped the trim motor like you saw on video and it started working 🤙🏼
@bamadondon0495
2 жыл бұрын
@@boatvibes that's exactly what mine's doing, I've got blinker trim right next to my steering wheel and then I've got the trim button on my motor and then I've got the trim button on the throttle and it doesn't matter which one I hit you can just hear it clicking, but I haven't tried tapping on the actual trim motor itself. So I'm glad I saw your video, because I was about to order a new solenoid thinking that the solenoid went out, but in my mind if the solenoid went out you wouldn't hear any clicking at all.. don't you think? I mean I am not about mechanic whatsoever, but everybody kept telling me that my relay / solenoid head went out but I've already tried the trick where you take the cover off and you take the green wire and the blue wire and you touch both of them to the red wire to see if it goes up or down and the motor is not moving whenever I touch either one of those wires to the red wire. So I think that the trim motor itself is having issues.. I'm serious man I've been on KZitem for days trying to figure it out and that helped me a lot so I appreciate it because it probably saved me from spending money that I didn't need to spend. And I guess I'm just going to get a trim motor. But I'm going to do the tap on the motor here in a few minutes and see if it budges at all. But even if it doesn't move maybe the motor went completely out, but surely if it's clicking like that then the relay or the solenoid whichever when you want to call it hasn't gone out? Or would it still be clicking if the relay still annoyed has gone out or not? I'm sorry to hit you with all the question marks... I just really haven't trying to figure out a way to fix this the cheapest as possible because my boat was running like a dream all the way to the point where I went to put it on the trailer and I went to trim the motor up and it just wouldn't budge. And it's still sitting on the kickstands right now. So I'm going to tap on the motor and see if it trims up or down no let me know which part I need to buy. I appreciate it

This video, even though it’s not a “fix”, it works like a charm. I’ve had to do this on starters, selinoid and motors like this. Works great to get you out of a jam BUT it’s not the fix. Will need a new one eventually as the hammer trick won’t work down the road. Works for a few years though.
