I own a Snugpak Ionosphere and I think it's the best bivy ever. Completely waterproof and plenty of room for me and 65L pack inside. The low profile and olive drab green color, make it a very effective, stealth-camping tent. The Outdoor Research Alpine AscentShell Bivy is also nice but much smaller inside than the Ionosphere, yet much easier to get in and out of. I'd like to see a rain test on an Outdoor Research bivys to see if i's actually waterproof, how well it ventilates and what it's like in windy storm conditions. There's many 1-person tent alternatives that might make more sense, depending on your needs.

the ioonosphere is pretty big. if you ask me, id call it a bivy tent, on the same level as the eureka solitare. ive heard that it is a great tent though. The main advantage of the outdoor research helium over the snugpak ionosphere is that the or helium is 1/3 the weight of the ionosphere.

I have had the earlier model and I cannot work out how to keep the outer secure if you just want to use the bug mesh. Does anyone have any ideas?

not exactly sure what you mean, but you should be able to secure the head down with stake. This will create tension that holds the bivy up.

If you are taking about keeping the waterproof “lid” off of your face…the built in “togs” are very in-effective. A couple clothes pins are the best solution I’ve found. Still hoping for a better one….

@@Enwild thank you. I slept outside with a or bivy for some time. 8 really enjoyed it. I would not go back to tents. 😁

Just under 1 pound. Between 14 and 16 ounces depending on whether or not you take the pole.

Bought this and returned. All the pictures show it looking taught. It is a pain in the butt very poorly designed. The opening toggles to keep the fabric up are a joke. The fabric hangs loosely at the back. I was looking for a light bike packing set-up. I ended up with a mountain hardware bivy sack and a small tarp. Works much better. I also use head netting if buggy.
