Why do you think it isn't out yet? David have said in an development video quite early on that he wants everything to be perfect on planets down to every single tree/rock. To release something that perfect will take a very, VERY, long time. This is exactly what David Braben said in that early development video: Now one of the questions people have been asking a lot about for example is landing on planets. Now Yes we're going to have landing on planets but there is a lot of detail that that's really important so for example if you were then to have a follow-up question what will be there when you land on the planet. That's what's being concerning a lot. If you imagine every planet when you get down to the surface is just a different colored heightmap then that would be very very disappointing. Even with lovely atmospheric effects. What I want to see down on the planet is interesting things for example; cities, scapes, even animals, life, trees etc.... The amount of work to create those things is so huge. We want to do it properly. That's really important as we do each of these things really well so that sorta thing will not be included on day one. We don't want it to be a dull experience where you just go down you get essentially exactly the same experience wherever you land.

The thing I love about outerra is that it is also being sold as an engine and they are encouraging people to make their own games using it, saw someone wanting to make a hyper realistic Kerbal Space Program type game, and it's easy to import your own models in to build cities and such. I've been playing the demo for a while but I might actually buy into it soon, I've been doing 3d modelling for a while now and I'd love to build a city or something, maybe start building my own hometown (though with far more identical houses lol)

You can drive across the USA in "The Crew". they made the major cities and then spaced them from each other the proper distance based off the scale of the whole map. It is a VERY large game and driving across the USA can take 30 minutes if you can sprint it in the fastest cars, or you can see all the different kinds of environments and cities all over the US. My personal favorite was to drift up and down the rocky mountains for hours. I have a Ferrari racing wheel for the Xbox One with pedals so that made it so enjoyable!

It's actually done well for NMS.. In case of outerra, this is not really procedurally generated. If it were really procedural, you could create an infinite amount of planets based on the same algorithms. It's based on real world hightmaps with some procedural stuff on top of it. Still cool, but a big difference.

@CShawnSmith
8 жыл бұрын
Not *quite* true. Outerra can use any dataset to create any number of procedurally generated worlds, it just has to be in a compatible format (which isn't easy). There are folks who have used it to create a real-world scale of Middle Earth, for example (I can't recall if it's in the current paid-demo release or not ... the last computer I had that could run Outerra died a few months ago). As the dataset for Mars grows (as well as the Moon), they'll be able to accurately model those bodies as well, and they've been looking into that. All it needs is the terrain information. Once you have that in a compatible format, the engine itself refines it using the algorithms (more or less) to create realistic terrain. I've been following the development since almost it's inception (maybe a year or two after it's start), and have communicated extensively with the developers, because I want to create a real-world scale model of my fictional fantasy landscape (think Game of Thrones kind of stuff). It will be possible with the engine, but it's probably a few more years off.

It's still procedurally generated, just not _randomly_ procedurally generated. There's a distinction, and procedural != random.
@francouz2339
8 жыл бұрын
That means absolutely nothing ;) Random is just another 'procedure'. Procedural planets are still 'random' just using the same seed everytime they are rendered. It they weren't random, you'd only get one planet ;)... However, Outerra by all means is a fully handcrafted planet, that's why it is Earth ;)
@Quazzi
8 жыл бұрын
Completely wrong. Procedural means that the planet is generated based on a set of parameters. Randomness would mean there are no set parameters and each one would be a random value or state causing a different planet each time. Outerra IS procedural generated because the whole planet isn't stored in memory in the same way as a normal game world. It is instead generated by a code that draws the landscape based off what the engine is told by the set parameters. In other words, the engine is told what should be in view based on the position on the planet, for example. Then as you move closer, altitude would determine vegetation, snow etc and also the ecology. Desert, grassland and such. This data is the only thing stored and is able to generate landscapes without the need of developers designing much because it is impossible to map the entire planet and render it in such detail from close up.
@francouz2339
8 жыл бұрын
Quazzimodo Productions A lot of completely wrong stuff in there. But don't know how you would altitude would determine desert, grassland or whatever. You should take a programming course. Or look up the Outerra blog, they actually explain how they do it there, before making up completely false assumptions. They use Blue Marble do determine where desert are for example. I cannot at all imagine how you would create a procedural Earth from altitude determining everything, sorry.

+Marcus Aseth This reminds me of Stargate and Stargate atlantis If we could use this to make planets, ships and use Stargates, open world pvp between humans, wraith, goauld.. Ie would be outstanding way of bringing it back :) Or immense campaign after Stargate Universe ending 1000/10

This has potential, if you add towns, big cities, and a character that can talk around, weapons, animals, and maybe a way to create towns, houses this game would be an awesome open world/sandbox type game. I'm sure there are other people who agree and would love to see such a game be created.

What does it mean exactly? Flat Earth recommendation? And to tell you the ultimate truth, All these Flat Earth BS became widely known not cause of FlatEarthers themselvs but because of people trying to convince these guys otherwise and if you ask me, What tf do i know, I have not been high enough to see the Earth’s curvature, I really want to send a recording device though, that wwould be pretty cool visual.

Its accurate but not very accurate I will say I live on the side of mountain in WV and it has my mountain and the neighboring mountains but I know for a fact that the top of my mountain is not as wide as it shows it is cause its very narrow. Also the hill leading up to my house is not as steep as it shows, but i'm still very impressed.
@iancarter2947

TheGreatWarrior123 Its procedurally generated, meaning it's not going to be exactly 1:1. You could expect it to be different, as that's the nature of procedurally generated games or models.

@francouz2339
8 жыл бұрын
TheGreatWarrior123 Yeah, that's to be expected, the scans have 'only' a resolution of 30m, so you don't get accurate mountain ranges, however, the improvement they have now in the mountain ranges is quite good compared to the older 90m scans.
@francouz2339
8 жыл бұрын
Deadmannow That is not true, they terrain is not procedural. It is 1:1 accurate is much as possible. Once NASA's SRTM has more accurate scans and they release them it is going to get better. In the link they show the improvement especially in the mountain ranges when going from 90m to 30m Earth scans. outerra.blogspot.cz/2015/05/evaluation-of-30m-elevation-data-in.html

I envision that in the future of video games, we will have a platform that we can use, in order to walk from game to game. So that you can put all of your favorite games onto one planet. Imagine walking from Skyrim, into battlefield. Would be pretty amazing, especially if there was a way to make it fit seamlessly.
