To me, the best and most important thing about Echoes of the Eye is the fact that they did it again. Outer Wilds was a once in a lifetime experience. Never would I be able to feel this way again. Nothing could do what this game did. You experienced something incredible and you have to accept the fact that you won't experience anything on this level ever again. That's what I thought... Then the DLC got announced. I got worried. After all, they couldn't possibly do it again, could they? But then they did. And now, even after having finished this game, this time for good, I know that this isn't the last time. I know it *CAN* be done again. And I know that sometime something will make me feel the way that Outer Wilds did on my first playthrough. Everything must end someday, but that doesn't mean that even better things aren't waiting out there for you.

I know you said the ending was a downer but hear me out... spoilers obviously! I've had a lot of time to dwell on the Prisoner and everytime I think about the end, I get emotional. The Prisoner rebelled against his own kind, while he was sad about his homeworld he was also smart enough to realise that eventually, everything dies. It's the whole message of the Outer Wilds main game but in a 'what if?' What if the nomai knew the true intentions of the eye? The Strangers saw the eye as the end of the universe but the Prisoner or *Kaepora* as he's referenced in the game's files saw it as the birth of a new universe. He knew without his intervention, his kind would bring not just an end to themselves but to everything. When Kaepora frees the eye, he does so selflessly. He doesn't care about the consequences, he simply knows it is the right thing to do. So then, imagine his feelings when after at least *280,000* years in the simulation alone, he receives a visitor. One that's not even his own race! This is why he acts so aggressively at first when you find him, he thinks "why are they back? What do they want from me now after all this time?" In telling Kaepora your story, not only do you tell him about the inevitable death of his people, you also tell him that his plan worked. All those years he was locked away doubting himself, possibly wondering whether it was worth it? In that moment that you tell him your story, he is totally validated. Without his sacrifice, finding the eye would never have been possible. He is the true hero of Outer Wilds. That's why I like to imagine he howls when he wakes, he expressing years and years of pain, knowing that it was worth it. You gave him the greatest gift he could ever ask for. When you free him, while it's sad he goes to the water, I couldn't think of any other way for the DLC to end. The Prisoner knows that life is fleeting and I'm sure he was very ready to welcome the sweet release of death by the time you found him. Think about it, you give him so many things. A chance to grieve lost loved ones, a bittersweet sense of happiness and a most importantly of all, a friend. When he extinguishes his flame, you've allowed him to die happy and I think that's beautiful. 10/10 fucking amazing DLC.
@maxnchief
2 жыл бұрын
The ending is completely emotional, and I only say it's a downer because it is depressing to think that after hundreds of thousands of years where he's had ample opportunity to extinguish his flame he decides to do so only after hearing not only was he right. But then able to walk free. I know he understands there is nothing left for him but the fact he goes for it so quickly like a dog running out a front door that's left even an inch open is mortifying. Agree 10/10 DLC . Also thank you for leaving an essay in my comment section I love reading comments and the fact you would bother to type this out on MY video keeps me going and making more

The message he leaves comes across to me as him offering to go with you to see what’s next after this life. It’s only cheapened a little by the fact that you will just reset the loop and do something else. Though the you that exists in that loop will have to make peace with being dead, anyway…

Outerwilds was truly an experience unlike any other. A game that instills such a wondrous sense of curiosity only to be rewarded with the satisfaction of piecing the puzzle together and exploring possibilities or theories that you had just come up with before flying yourself into that big ol' sun. Now, I had beaten outerwilds in 2019 and had went back to it several times to test a few theories that had sprung up out of no where. I just didn't want it to be over because I didn't think I would get a chance to experience such a wonderful game again. Years later they announce the echoes of the eye and my imagination runs WILD! I'm thinking to myself , "Are they gunna be able to pull off that same feeling again? Are they just going to build off the story we've already come to know and love?" They... NAILED that feeling, recreated it, AND made it all make sense. Cheers to Mobius for hand-crafting the single most amazing game experience I've ever had the blessing to play. I sincerely hope they, or some other developer, can create something so beautiful in the future because by god it'll be a sad day if I don't get to experience such a thing a THIRD time. Either that or if someone could figure out how to scoop a specific part of my memories outta my head, specifically me playing this game for this first time, that'd be great too!

The true genius of Echoes of the Eye is that its main purpose is to answer a question that existed in the base game, but which wasn't a _demanding_ mystery. Playing the base game and learning that the Nomai followed a brief signal from the Eye that then stopped was a cool bit of lore, and one _could_ wonder why exactly the signal was so brief, but it wasn't a frustratingly dangling loose end because the Eye is so strange that it could just be chalked up to its odd properties. And then the DLC comes along and goes, actually, there's a really specific and extremely compelling reason for that lore point. A good DLC, like a good sequel, is one that is not required to make the original thing good, but by existing, enriches the world and lore. And they absolutely nailed it.

The brilliant design of the two ship hangers is even better than you mentioned! The sun side hanger has a secret elevator that takes you to the top of the dam, but thorough players will check this spot when they first enter the far side hanger and find nothing, thus learning not to check there when they enter sun side. The devs use a curious player's own systematic exploration against them!

Sadly, Outer Wilds has reached the end of its life. Mobius Games announced that the most recent update, patch 1.1.13, will be the final major update. This is it, it's as polished as it's ever going to get. And despite the game's message of not being afraid to let go, I am. It will take a long time for a new game to dethrone Outer Wilds as my most beloved game, which dethroned VA-11 Hall-A before it. N1-RV Ann-A has a shot at the throne, but given the difference in style and theme from VA-11 Hall-A, it's not likely. Perhaps Mobius's next game, whatever and whenever it may be.

The thing I love the most about this DLC is that it fixes a plot hole I didn't realize the main game even had. I mean think about it, why the hell couldn't the Nomai find the eye of the universe!? They could accurately track the location of the quantum moon, but couldn't track the thing it was orbiting? Not to mention that the eye is found using a probe and somehow coordinates can be input to warp directly to its location despite it not being directly observed at the time tou warp to it. I knew something was up the moment that first slide reel showed the Strangers arriving in the eye system and IMMEDIATELY finding the eye. Then the actual reveal of what's going on (as well as why the DLC is named what it is) was just so mind blowing, emotionally moving, and ties everything together so, so well. Especially after the recent update where they added a single extra clue you can find that informs you why the prisoner did what he did. My god this is actual perfection.

*spoiler-ish* Fun fact: You can reach all of the hidden libraries without having to do the stealth When I first played I had a massive misconception about how the stealth mechanics worked so I ended up solving each library without using the stealth *Big spoilers* It was a while ago but here is what I can remember: Cabin one was easy thats the base solution anyways Hotel was a bit more interesting, I believe I activated the bridge, activated the elevator, went back to the start and activated the hotel, went out the simulation and entered back into it through the diving bell bonfire area, used the rafts in the simulation to get back to the hotel and went up through the elevator. From there you can just walk down to the library (you have to outrun the one owlk below but even then I think I just dropped the lantern, walked away, he investigated it, left, and I picked it back up and went to the library. The village was by far the hardest, I actually went and grabbed the warp core from the ash twin core to give myself more time. I entered the bonfire in the tower and activated the raft area, went and activated the village then jumped off into the water. I then went to the bell area and took the raft back to the village. You can then either take a gamble and just walk straight on, turn left, and go to the elevator, which normally works (All but one time I made it through without seeing an owlk) or wait there but lose time. Once you get down the elevator wait for the tower on the stranger to collapse, making all the owlks in the village disappear. Then run through and get to the library, you wont have long. Works but you have to listen to the music you get from picking up the warp core for the whole damn cycle

Outer wilds is my favourite game of all time. The dlc is great aswell but I think in some areas it falls a bit short of the base game. Namely - I liked how the base game had many different interconnected stories and you pick up these threads at random points and have to piece everything together. Dlc had 1 story, and was in a rather linear fashion. I prefer text based clues to image reels but thats more personal preference. I did feel however the timeloop mechanic didnt work as well as, in the base game, it was core to the story, and acted as a reset point to go explore another planet, each time taking of from timber hearth you had a different objective, a different place to fly to and explore, in the dlc it was always, get in, suit up, fly to the stranger, pick up lantern, then you can start, every time and it felt a bit repetitive. That being said the stranger was an amazing area, breathtaking the first time I saw it.
@maxnchief

I do agree with this. The time loop is very underutilized in the dlc. It's more annoying and you don't really get the same feeling as discovering something cool then realizing you are out of time

12:49 They changed this in a later patch. First, you also see his footsteps into the water. Second, if you walk into the water you get to see the text "echoes of the eye", before going back to your campspawn. It makes it a bit clearer that the thread is done.

In the newest patch for the game, they added a final slide to the story of the Strangers finding the Eye of the Universe. It's the same genius subtle game design the game uses throughout to guide you where the devs want you even though it's as always completelh open. It's likely the 1 time in the game you'll be approaching from that side, with every other time using the HUD markers. Unlike the sunward side this side is completely covered in shadow, not letting you fully understand what you're seeing. All you see is the giant glowing hole, so naturally that's where you're drawn.
