"Well both of you have strong claims to the crown of your kingdom so instead I will rule and take all the profits from it"- the way King Edward openly exploits and humilliates Scotland while painting himself as a friend is just astounishing. Very well written scene.

In the end, it's about what's relevant. Both Robert and John Comyn had legitimate claim by descent from the prior Dunkeld dynasty, and in purely de jure legal terms that might be relevant to a great many people. But in realistic terms, King Edward had claim to the crown by dint of personal conquest, he had the strongest army and he was the feudal overlord of both Comyn and Bruce (at least for their English lands). In the context of a feudal society, where the strong oppress those beneath them and enforce their obedience, the de facto reality of Edward's rule trumps de jure claims. Edward is simply stating a fact.

I like how this movie doesn't necessarily take a moralistic stand. Edward longshanks was a very talented king looking out for the best interests of his kingdom as Robert the Bruce was a good king to be. It shows how they accepted the practical reality of their war rather than good vs bad.

@@goodcomrade2949 Well its all about perspective. Edward completed the conquest of Wales and used a succession crisis to enforce his rule over Scotland. In his youth Edward had seen the failures and weaknesses of his father Henry III who was constantly undermined by his Barons and enemies. Edward was by contrast effective and intimidating. He was tall for the time and generally scared those around him. He also had his father's lisp and a droopy eye. He was profoundly effected by the death of his wife Eleanor of Castille. In fact that arguably made him more ruthless in his kingship. The point I'm getting at is. From the perspective of the Scots - most of the Scots - Edward was the bad guy and the enemy. Doesn't mean he was more or less evil than any other king. That was just the rules of war and life in the period. Bruce understood that and that violence and cunning was the only way to win.

Wow, Stannis is such and impressive leader that even dead, and playing a different character, he still gets everyone bending the knee to him! While watching this I fell off my chair. This movie celebrated so many real historical details it's amazing. It had its few rough edges of course, with condensing this particular Scottish uprising a lot and such. But overall impressively truthful to environment, clothing, armour etc. De Bruce mentions at one point the army of Longshanks as "the strongest army in the world", I don't know about that. You could argue strongest in Europe, as the Angevin empire under the Plantagenets (Edward's bloodline) which controlled half of France had extremely rich resources and manpower.
