Nice review. I'm a carpenter and have a little home studio set up at my place. I'm on holidays right now so I started making a desk today myself using their design. Adjusted the size and made it a little smaller by about 3/4 because I agree that it's too deep/tall when I saw the specs. Considering my material cost $250 CAD, it is a hefty price tag, but they had someone design, engineer, and manufacture it, and also have lots of employees/overhead to cover so I can understand the price.

I'm in the process of getting a simliar desk built by a custom furniture maker - not much more expensive but it addresses the four biggest gripes I have with this one: first, the top shelf should only cover the left and right racks so you can put your monitor on the main surface. Of course, that means you need to widen the desk a bit for the screens most people use these days. Second, the keyboard tray didn't extend far enough back in the stowed positoin. I wanted mine completely out of the way, so it extends way back from the front and your knees can't hit it regardless of how high it is. That works well for me because I only pull out the MIDI keyboard maybe 15% of the time I spend at the desk, so I don't have to sacrifice ergonomics for the 85% of the time I'm not using it. Third, there's no finished veneer surface with rounded edges like on a "nice" piece of furniture, so it doesn't look like a "nice" piece of furniture. And fourth, those darn screw caps that show on the sides. Nothing says "cheap furniture" like those things. Output's desk is maybe worth the price but for just a bit more you can get something custom built that's both more functional and a "nice" piece of furniture.

Only half way through i had to pause and write a comment when you mention the price, initially i thought you were talking about thousands but then i realized when you said the total price was 1000$, for a high quality desk (or any piece of quality furniture for that matter) this is NOT expensive. Professional woodworkers and furniture makers price their creations for thousands of dollars and love it or hate it, its the price you paid for a quality hand made piece of furniture. Ikea and the like have brought down significantly the price perspective of furniture but along with it comes the quality. I dont know what the quality of this desk is but imo a piece of furniture is something that should outlast your own lifetime rather than be replaced after 5 or 10 years.

@@AGVersace100 Laminated wood is still very expensive though. They use AA or A quality cabinet grade birch; you're looking at ~$100/sheet.. and this desk is probably about 4 sheets alone. This isn't some shit quality home depot/lowe's laminated wood. Baltic Birch plywood is stronger than most hardwoods, including maple, white oak, and even regular birch hardwood. The layering process of this plywood also ensures 0 warp (unless you soak this thing underwater). This is very high quality wood.

I agree, If you ever take a look at beautifully designed hand crafted furniture (chairs for example) it can get into the several thousands of dollars. To me, under $1000 for something this intricately designed, compact, and sleek and sexy is not too much to ask for.

So glad you adjusted your chair, it's so much bigger than I thought and I've been measuring out specs in my space... And it's so deep... As for price, it's not inexpensive, but in comparison to other pro audio work desks, it's on the cheaper-side, sometimes by as much as half or third. Plus I think the design more than makes up for it - it looks like a rugged piece of furniture, and not something so highly specialized for music that you couldn't still use it for normal desk activities.

I have both, the Output desk is in my music studio and the Uplift desk is my home office desk. I really do wish I could stand in the studio, but you can't beat the amount of surface area the Output desk provides (with the keyboard tray). Three tiers of surface just really lets me create a centralized command center with all my devices within reach. If you don't have a bunch of synths, drum machines, effects, midi controllers etc... the Output might be overkill and having the ability to stand would be more important, but if you've got a lot of boxes the Output is pretty sweet.

I insisted on having a rack bridge with my monitor and all rack gear right in front of me on my desk for a few years. I recently got sick enough of straining my neck or having to elevate my chair in order to comfortably sit at my desk and use the computer, I couldn't help but remember before I got into music when I could sit way back in my chair and lounge while browsing the web. I moved the racks to the side. There are tons of other rack unit storage options, it may look pro having racks right up front, but it isn't necessarily any more efficient. Get a rack stand or two, or three, cabinet, whatever, but no one should have to fight to be close enough to see their monitor, doing that made my huge widescreen monitor ineffective because I had to magnify everything! Now I sit level with my monitor and it's a million times better. I dealt with that nonsense for too long because I wanted it so bad to look like a pro studio desk... not important.

I recently added a monitor extension to it to sit my mega big Samsung widescreen monitor with it's mega big base.... the monitor arm I originally was using broke... due to the weight of this monitor.... I like the Argosy 15L it is more in line with what I really need. The ability to have that longer middle section for the monitor from a desk perspective. I like the look of the wood with the Output desks... if they change the design to be longer and without the high shelf for the monitor it would be nice.

Ricky Tinez Yes, like @mattb said below, it comes apart in big sections that will fit through a door/down a hall, but they are massive/unwieldy and leave the surfaces open to scratching. Also, be very careful not to over torque the bolts, easy to strip them. This is probably my main complaint with the desk: It’s huge and heavy, they designed it to ship easily and go together easily with absolutely no thought on moving it in/out of a home project studio, which is what it’s designed for. Granted, I’ve moved it more than most people probably have to, but you only have to move it once to realize this is an epic fail on Output’s part.

Ricky Tinez i knew when i saw the Amazon tape but wanted to believe. TBH it will probably be delivered in a briefcase handcuffed to someone’s hand.

There has been a huge rise in this so called “studio furniture”, but people tend to overlook the most important feature ; resonance. A lot of these budget desk`s and other racks are made of plywood and other cheap materials, to keep overhead and profits maximized for the vendor. But they do absolutely nothing for the acoustics in your workspace, most of them vibrating and cluttering your audio image. Take my advise (or don`t) and search for a carpenter who can build something to spec, in a woodsort that is dense and solid (like oak) Please don`t go with the first offer, but do some homework and find one you trust. The extra cash you spend, will pay dividends in the end, owning a piece of furniture that will stay with you for a decade and beyond. And if you prefer a certain colour, then stain that bitch yourself, it`s easy. Oh, and pro tip ; A smaller desk have fewer reflecting surfaces.

I’m pretty much deskless. It’s pretty fun moving around a bunch while making music. Get physical with it!

Does anyone have a good alternative to this (maybe less awesome but still good) in a similar style/build quality? I would love to get this desk but a) I can’t wait 14-16 week current lead time and b) I REALLY want to try and avoid paying that much for a desk (even though I know relatively speaking it’s not a bad price for a desk like this). Any ideas would be most appreciated! 😉

There are so many, lets say "hobbies" that could benefit from well designed intentional work stations. I don't know what is available right now as I've been out doing music for a minute but many years ago my roommate and I built a desk from other desks and swing arms. We sat and sort of doodled up an imaginary "perfect" set up then set about thrift store shopping. If something fit the bill we'd get it, rip it apart and mount various bits on swing arms or casters or screw it onto the back as shelves. It "worked" great...until our lack of craftsmanship came due, then it fell apart. Of course it was built with "fvck it good enough" and screws stuck through here and there. I guess that is a long way of saying the market seems to always be a bit lacking, but you can cobble something together.
