Thank you so much for this video. I had maintenance done on my AC system in April and they said I needed to replace the CAP. I never checked their work. I noticed my electric costs skyrocketed and I noticed a funny noise coming out of the compressor unit. I called a different AC repair shop and they said I needed a new fan motor because it was spinning in the wrong direction. I watched your video and immediately did a face palm! The first company hooked up the CAP wrong and the second company misdiagnosed. I reversed the wires as suggested in your video and the fan immediately started spinning in the right direction. I wish I could give you a 1,000 likes!!! Thanks again!

I actually had the same situation. Had a bad cap, but I installed it wrong after buying a new one myself. After looking at the wiring diagram I realized I mixed up hermetic and common. I already paid a professional more than $120 to come out and tell me the fan was spinning the wrong way. He didn’t even open up the control panel, just outright quoted me almost $600 for a new fan and asked me what I wanted to do. Thank goodness I kept searching for an answer and found this video! Otherwise I would be financing what some people consider small change.

Thanks for these videos! Clear, concise and straightforward presentation. I just watched a bunch to help me figure out why my condenser fan won't run. Quick question: When my AC turns on, the outdoor unit tries to come on and I hear a hum/buzz for a few seconds, but then it stops. The fan never comes on. Maybe the Start/Run capacitor is blown? From watching your videos, it seems like blown capacitor should cause a constant hum (not start and then immediate stop). What do you think might be going on? Do you think maybe the motor is broken? (possibly from a neglected return-air filter change?) Thanks again for your awesome videos and channel.

You got your outdoor unit fan problem solved? would like to hear your update info. I will check the motor itself first, just try to spin it with a screwdriver when power off and see if it can turn freely, and then check the dule capacitor with a multimeter to see the capacitance. Third, I will check the fan motor with a multimeter to see if the 2 winds are ok. These should be enough to solve the problem as usual, but really like to know what you got finally.

@@ND-fy3wu Yup, it was pretty much what WoAT responded. The capacitor needed replacement. One leg of the capacitor was still good, measuring at 5uF. But the other leg was nearly zero instead of 45uF. Got it replaced and it worked right away For the couple days before it got fixed, i was using a stick to start the fan manually. I would turn the thermostat off, then wait a few mins. Then go outside in front of the fan, and turn thermostat on. As soon as i heard the sound of the compressor trying to turn on, i would give the fan kick with the stick. Then it ran for a couple hours at least.

@@Dhrumeel Great to know that you solved it, good job. Usually the capicitor can be bad when its life span just expired, or it is caused by another/upstream problem like bad wire connections etc., so you might want to check those wire connections inside the outside unit and also the air handler/furnace/inside unit, just a simple visual check can help, look for those loose connections, burn signs. Make ure you turn power off before you do anything to the system, safety is always No.1.

I recently replaced the capacitor on my ac unit and it worked for a month before tripping the breaker. I noticed the fan blades were spinning in the opposite direction they were before I replaced the capacitor (previously spinning clockwise, sucking air INTO the unit). I assumed I had overheated the compressor but connecting the wires incorrectly and causing the blades to spin in the wrong direction so I remedied this, making them spin clockwise once again. The unit is running fine but the air coming out of the vents is now minimal and not very cold. So... is it possible that the fan was spinning the wrong way for the past 10 years, I accidentally installed the wires the CORRECT way only to experience a separate issue with the unit tripping the breaker??

Interestingly many HVAC internet sites mentioning that the fan should spin clockwise which mine does and blows out the hot air to the top. Maybe the York AC fan blades are designed differently. The left side of fan blade is higher than the right and therefore when it turns clockwise, it will scoop out the hot air to the top. I see the AC that you're showing has the right side of the fan blade is higher than the left side.

About a year later had a HVAC tech here for some reason, who realized my (self-installed) fan was spinning backwards and switched the wires for me. I never noticed any huge difference either way, but was glad to have it 'proper'. What are the repercussions if it runs backwards long-term? Just reduced efficiency or something worse than that?

@SandySez I have actually seen air conditioners run with fans spinning backwards for years and they survived... I would agree with Big C that long term it can't be good for the compressor but from what I have seen it seems like it effects the efficiency more than it actually damages anything. Short term at least. I have seen some crazy stuff in the field that made me question the validity of the "facts" I know. 😄 Some things I understood wrong, some things I was taught wrong, and others were not supposed to be possible but I would come to some oddball air conditioner that reminds me that there is a lot that I don't know. Nowadays I am wary of claiming things as absolute. There are so many variations and special circumstances out there. 🤷♂️

@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you and well-said. I admit, I was contemplating how this may effect various units differently. I have an old, fairly inefficient single-stage ... but it may be more robust when it comes to issues like this (or vice-versa??). The more modern multi-stage etc, units may be more susceptible to damage from this. I doubt if it's a one-size fits all conclusion regarding anything beyond the compromised efficiency issue. Would make a good tip if you were to show a video of what happens to fan and compressor when someone hooks up capacitor connections to wrong terminals.. Also, if you had a locked up scroll compressor, that didnt free up from a hard start kit, have you ever reversed the herm and common to unstick it instead of rapping on the compressor head with a rubber mallet?

Check for the cupping bow of fan blades first. A flipped fan blade and reversed run-start windings on motor will blow air up but will not produce the full amount of air flow due to non-optimum blade cupping direction. Besidse just tilt of blades, they often have a cupping bow to scoop up the air, like a snow shovel. Single phase induction motors often have different winding wire gauge and number of winding turns between run and start windings, so it is not good for motor to be reversed by swapping the run and start connections.

@Sergio Solano Thanks! You would simply plug in the two wires that come from the fan motor and go to the dual capacitor, to the single capacitor. This applies if only the fan side of the dual capacitor went bad but the herm side is still good. If the herm side is bad too, you would need to put in another single capacitor for the herm/compressor as well. If you don't have a large enough capacitor, you can combine a couple of them as well. It gets a little messy so if possible, it's best to replace dual caps with dual caps. You might find this video on combining capacitors interesting though if you haven't seen it before: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0oKAtYuLbGWFeaQ

Within 10 minutes, it started squealing some as if a belt was loose or whatever. Can you point me in the right direction as to if it is a fairly easy fix or if I should just replace it? Also, on another note, my AC is down and out....it's old and needs replacing, which I'll do before selling my home in NC. With the help of your channel, maybe I can do it myself with some connections. I have been itching to try my hand at doing a mini-split, but I have duct work and it's not really an open layout with several rooms upstairs. Not only are your friends lucky to have you around, Arnold is fortunate to have you as his owner as well! 👍👍👍 Hopefully he will be energetic and in a good mood in the days to come! Good to see you too David, we appreciate and accept the blessings! May the good Lord bless you, your family, and friends as well! Aloha from Hawaii! 🌴🌴🌴👨👩👦🤙🤙😎🦎

What happens if you flip the blade on a motor with the correct polarity will it still push air up but just not as much?

What about if the technician mistakenly installed the fan blades backwards ? Better check everything!

I installed an aftermarket Dayton fan motor. It's spinning counter, but I need it to spin clockwise. Do I just swap the wires orange to orange, to orange and red that are jumpered together at the top of the new motor?

What would it mean if mine runs backwards sometimes and other times it spins normally? The motor was replaced 3 years ago can't remember if the tech replaced the capacitor at the same time.

I have a Miller Split System on my Manufactured home. My High pressure switch tripped and will not reset itself and there is no manual reset. The AC Man said it would be extremely expensive to replace. Do you have any thoughts on this?

What about my AC unit, when kicking on, randomly starting in the opposite direction? Sometimes it comes on spinning clockwise and sometimes it comes on spinning counterclockwise?

Question for you: I had my AC serviced last year and the tech told me the fan had been wired backwards and was turning the opposite direction. He also said my capacitor needed to be replaced so he swapped it with a new one and now the air blows out the top, as it’s supposed to. My question is: if my system had been running backwards for several years (it’s a new home so I can only assume it was installed incorrectly), how big of an impact do you think that might have had on my electric bill? Is it a big difference when it runs backwards or more of an incremental hit?

Can the motor spinning backwards because of polarity cause damage to the motor and anything else?
@WordofAdviceTV

From what I have seen, usually not because the unit stops cooling well and it ends up getting repaired. But if it has been going backwards for a long time.. Then yes, it would probably start to affect the capacitor and the compressor, decreasing their lifespans.

Yes.. the motor, unless reversible, is designed, or wound to run in one direction. To run in reverse is not as efficient and is an unnecessary load on the motor.

Help is needed, please. My heat pump has two cooling and heating stages, as well as an electric coil auxiliary backup (no gas or propane). Within the thermostat, there are eight wires. So far, I have changed three of the thermostats, but to no avail. The HVAC keeps running for literally hours until I lower the set point temperature, at which point it stops. The issue is that when it reaches the set point (heat or cooling), the HVAC doesn't stop. It runs nonstop for hours once the temperature reaches the set point.Never will the thermostat display a temperature that is higher than the set point. Heat works. Please provide advice.

I have an AC unit that has had its condenser motor and capacitor replaced. when it starts on, it wants to turn to the opposite direction and it has trouble starting to turn. What could be causing this to happen?

Question, not related to this video. Can you convert an R22 system into whatever is the "new" freon is now? I have a Trane 2TTB3. I'm not sure how old it is, but the house is about 16 years old. Not sure if it ever got replaced by the old owners, but just curious and sort of thinking for the future.

No. 410a pressures are too high, your best bet is 407c or r458a or something similar. They're designed as drop ins/conversion refrigerants for r22.
