Hornby? Bachman? You taking notes? A Class A locomotive that doesn't cost a fortune to be good. A stunning example of you get what you pay for minus the coupling issues. The crawl could be better but to me is dismissible as it is an express loco for main line passenger service. An excellent model that blows to shame the lemons from Hornby, Bachman, Dapol, and Heljan.

As a Midland and Western transition era modeller the Manor was the first Accurascale locomotive I ordered. Having seen the deltic features I had to order Brush type two 5544. When Accurascale get round to producing the centre headcode "Welsh" locos I will be ordering a couple of green ones. However, should Accurascale choose to produce a Landore allocated blue 37 with the "car headlight bracket" for the Central Wales line, then I will not be able to resist !!!!

I think this is one of those models that signals a changing of standards, and goes so far above and beyond in level of detail that previous 5 star level of detail models would no longer make 5 stars in comparison. Other models now have to measure up to this to get 5 stars.

@@SamsTrains definitely room for improvement on quality, but the level of detail felt head and shoulders over many of the models that got 5 stars from you over the years. The only detail features I think I've ever seen of heard of that this model didn't execute excellently were pre installed crew and rotating fans, and both of those are things I can only remember seeing a few times ever. There are a few things they included that I've only seen in reviews you've done in the past year or so, like the etched metal steps and the real dangling chains, plus some other rare and well executed detail features like the etched metal builder's plate accessories and the internal lighting. You've mentioned a couple times in the past that what you count as 5 stars has shifted a bit, and I think the requirements for 5 stars might have to shift up a bit further now that we have models like this to compare to.

Sam, further to my previous comments about the Deltic, mine has arrived and it looks and runs fabulously (it's DCC and the crawl is awesome). I had a small problem, in that some of the absolutely tiny steps at the corner of the body became detached and went missing when I first ran it. I emailed Accurascale last night (Saturday) at around 22.30 asking about the problem, fully expecting the same reply I had from Hornby - namely that they don't carry small spares and can't help. Two hours later at 00.30 on a SUNDAY morning I received a reply telling me that they would be dispatching the parts and I would receive them shortly. I'm flabbergasted by this, and truly hope that Accurascale thrive - fabulous products, great prices and excellent service. They've offered to exchange locos with less defects that yours had in terms of paint. I get the impression the email support is similarly prompt. I think they've learnt a fair few lessons by this for the subsequent releases. At £160 it's a heck of a lot of loco! To be fair to them the subsequent loco's are increasing in price but none have gone through the £200 mark. Only the 92 approaches that but it has two working pantographs so two extra motors!

Oh btw, as for a crawl. We’ve put quite some study into starting and stopping motion dynamics of real locomotives for our modelling matching in the future. We’ve observed that the biggest, gigantic wheels of steamers almost immediately perform a full 1st rotation somewhere between 4 to 5 seconds. Smaller wheels in the post-steam era somewhere around 3 seconds. Consequently, a 'crazy' super slow crawl taking a lot of seconds for a full 1st wheel rotation at departure or small movement isn’t actually very much needed for being prototypical. This is our observation of course, and others may have different expectations.

Hugely impressive effort and result from Accurascale. I have seen a few videos of the DCC version and the sounds are very authentic. I would have no objection to parting with £260 for that version given that other companies are asking as much as that or more for locos that are not built nearly as well. Everything about this, from the packaging, finish, detail, loco information and performance talks volumes about a company that is clearly determined to produce top quality, top performing products at top value prices. The only downsides weee the coupling issue which probably means this was tested on Accurascale wagons and coaches but not other makers and not supplying instructions on taking off the body- bet that will lead to a few ruined bodies needing replacing. I have every confidence Accurascale will address these issues very soon. In conclusion, the other manufacturers in the industry need to up their game and take this very seriously. Great news for the enthusiasts!

I got my 9016 Gordon Highlander on monday, is absolutely fantastic. One of the bogie chain mounts had come loose in the box and a second disappeared during running in, but the loco is amazing and is even more powerful than the renowned hornby class 60. It can haul all 16 IIA biomass wagons and 14 bachmann mk1s on my relatively tight corners and slight gradients. I also really appreciate how the headcode digits are mostly misaligned, because they would never have been perfect in day to day operations. I didn't have any issues with my couplings, as they seemed to couple perfectly every time and only popped out once when some mk1s derailed on a corner and fell over. Agreed re torque at low speed, on test in my bedroom it took a bit to get going (although that was before I ran it in in the loft). Still awaiting my sound fitted D9009 Alycidon from Rails though. And now I'm excited for the 92 and the 3 37s I've preordered.

Just received a sound version of The Durham Light Infantry. As you show, the detail is incredible and far superior to that any other manufacturer has produced. The sound is impressive and the decoder allows more lighting control. I agree that the weight of the engine affects the slow speed running, however, that's not really a problem for me with an express locomotive. For £250, sound fitted, including postage, this is the best value locomotive I have bought, especially when I compare it to the £217 that Hornby are asking for their DCC ready Class 91. (I paid £200, with postage from a retailer and had to send it back for exchange due to incorrect gauge leading to derailing on points... poor quality control). Accurascale is clearly leading a change in standards that other manufacturers will have to follow.

Unboxed mine today. One or two issues, bogie chain broken, a couple of small detail parts dislodged, found floating around in the packaging. Also, the hint of a cyanoacrylate fingerprint in the paint. All now fixed. Removed one coupling to add all the scale detail supplied, and replaced the other with one of better quality and an offset to correct the height issue. With regard to bits falling off - a classic manufacturing mistake. Pre-painted parts will simply not adhere to each other well. Any movement and the paint cracks and releases the component. Paint must be removed for the plastics to bond well. The bogie chains are a nice addition, but make body removal a chore - equally some notes on this task seem to have gone astray... Runs like a Swiss watch. Just ordered the sound set on pre-order from Accurascale. Generally very impressed. Best bit? One hundred and sixty quid. Other manufacturers need to wake up and smell the coffee. With detail that matches a static model, and a mechanism that puts many in the shade, lacklustre sound fitted efforts from anyone in excess of two hundred and fifty sovs won't be tolerated...

As I’ve said before, I’m an avid viewer of all your reviews and find them invaluable. OK, I see you’ve had some issues with this Deltic - notably the couplings. (I’ll be interested to see how mine fares when it arrives). But I was shocked to see its scores beaten, albeit extremely narrowly, by the Hattons P Class. Here you’ve knocked off 20% of each of your maximum possible scores for Mechanism and Quality and 25% for your Performance rating. For the Quality rating, where it looked like you need a microscope to spot some of the very few scuffs, this feels very harsh. What exactly does a manufacturer need to do to meet your 100% 5-star rating please?

I think he also knocked the quality for the couplings.

Yeah that's right Sam - the paint splodges were noticeable to me, and there was nothing like that on the Hatton's P class. The P class was also similarly well detailed, yet its performance was leaps and bounds better than this, not to mention the fact that the couplings worked perfectly, and the loco is extremely serviceable with all components easy to access. So to answer your question directly, in order to meet the 5 star rating, this loco needed to be free of the paint splodges on the bodywork, it needed to be a better runner, functional couplings, better instructions, and easier to access for maintenance, cab and headcode fitting. Hopefully that's clear, Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I have to say - there are some cases where I think you have been generous to certain models, but in this case I think you have been a little hard on Accurascale. I think the mechanism deserved 4 1/2 - you dinged a full star for the only flaw you mentioned - accessibility - it raised the bar with doubled pickups, dual flywheels, all wheel drive, brass bearings, large 5 pole motor. Performance - again, you dinged a full star for the very slow crawl being a little jerky, and as for quality - I grant you that. I would put the coupling height under quality along with the paint splotches, and the finish and given a 4 or even 3 1/2 if it weren't for the bar raising excellence of the rest of the loco. So - overall, I probably would say 1/2 mark better than you gave.

There are a whole series of instruction kits supplied on line by Accurascale - incedible detail - including instructions on who to remove the chains - in an online world everything is provided to the level I have never seen before and they inform customers signed up to their website so accurasacle have provided another first interms of loco detail and instructions

Regarding the wrong height floppy NEM couplings. I'm thinking that as this was one of this new company's early projects, they are modeling the plastic parts on CAD but their engineers are just maybe a bit naive on manufacturing practices, especially with regard to allowing for part stacking tolerance build-up. So on the computer screen, all the parts are in the correct place, but the real moulded parts with an air gap added, to ensure parts fit not foul each other, introduces drop down slack. Heljan are terrible for this, they never seem to get it right. In my experience, only Hornby and Bachmann have reliable and correct NEM couplings. I'm surprised Sam, you didn't bring that Symoba NEM pocket height gauge into play (available from DCC Supplies) ? Update : Just as I finish writing this mine (a sound fitted Nimbus) arrived. I've placed it on some track with said Symoba NEM pocket height gauge. One coupling is within the 0.5 mm tolerance allowance and the other end is actually too high by about 1.25 mm. Both ends coupled to my Hornby Hush Hush tender, but it was the Hornby hook doing all the work, because the Accurascale one's hook was too long to actually latch. Upon removing my loco from the clamshell, two of the tiny corner steps by the buffers had parted company. I therefore recommend you unpack the loco within the very large white box lid, so bits that have broken off are easily visible and won't fall onto the carpet never to be found or even noticed.

This is a superior model Sam, very good indeed. As you say, it's not perfect, and the couplings appear to be a problem. That is making me hesitate as to whether I should get one or not. It would be good to have an update on how you could fix that problem, if you have a mind to do so. At least Accurascale have thrown down the gauntlet to other manufacturers in producing superior models at very reasonable prices. Hang your heads in shame, Hornby and Bachmann. Best, Pete.

Hi Sam, great review. My 55005 arrived a couple of days ago. So impressed. I know yours isn't DCC sound but don't know if anyone else has spotted this yet. Switch on all the lights, F0 markers, F11 red tails, F12 cab and F25 engine room. Then F1 engine start and you even get the lights dim battery drain effect as the engine cranks over, absolutely brilliant.

nice loco...at a "reasonable"price.....could be worth buying....🙂 ps....why not exchange the couplings with some "quality" ones, of the likes of Roco, Fleischmann or märklin style....? you get "close coupling" andthey are very reliable and sturdy.....well worth a try....all my stock has them....even the british ones...thanks to "nem".... although the southern coaches were the "wrong ones", they look very nice....Hornby or bachmann??....cheers.

I had a similar coupling issue with my Bachmann Class 4mt. Just holding in up or down would let the couplings drop out. Also, not sure if it's just me not seeing it properly, but the couplings look like they're on the correct level, but they slope upwards?

100 ton Deltic locomotives were NOT designed to crawl! Did you manage to get the chains back on? That would be a concern of mine if I could sstill get one. I would worry that if one had come off during delivery, that I would not be able to put it back on again!

Hi Sam, excellent review as always. Slightly annoyed with you as i was trying to resist these lol But wow, so it can be done, fair price and honestly brilliant models. It just shows how ripped off we have been for so long. I was loving everything about it until I saw the body work damage and the glue marks around the lamp irons and miss fitting buffer, what a crying shame! But over all amazing. Snapping the couplings was something Deltic drivers had to watch out for so the models lose ones are accurate, the chains are for the handbrake and look a little long but more than good enough.

The only slight doubt with the conclusion that other manufacturers will need to up their games on detail/quality and lower their prices to match Accurascale's is the lack of supply of Accurascale's locos. Accurascale sold out of the Deltic class 55s immediately upon release! Perhaps they will make more stock available as they grow. If they do have better availability I'm sure they will force the other manufacturer's hands. Anyway, well done Accurascale and Dapol; we need you both to help the hobby going forward.

Another fine review Sam.... I would compare this in weight to the Hornby Dublo (Green) Co-Co Diesel, which I think was ultimately turned out by them in Deltic livery.....and obviously without the dreaded yellow ends. I would reckon the Hornby Dublo model, (an all die-cast body), was heavier The Hornby Dublo was fitted with Traction Tyres and they proved their worth in every respect. As was common with Hornby Dublo, they usually ran some long distance, (hours of continuous operation), with a long train, whenever they introduced a new model. Invariably this was run in the window of a store like Gamages, with a report of the test then featuring in the following months Meccano Magazine. When my Dad bought me the Co-Co, (a locomotive was usually my main Christmas present), we were both struck by how powerful it actually sounded. D9006 was the first Deltic we both saw at Leeds Central, when it brought in The Yorkshire Pullman......obviously without the dreaded yellow ends, and long before it carried a name. Just watching it ticking-over was pretty impressive to me as a young 14 year old lad. James Hennighan Yorkshire, England

At a price of around 160 pounds, I’d say that’s a good deal - let’s hope Accurascale do a better job on the couplers next time.

Well I have just taken delivery of my D9009 Alycidon in BR Blue. Unfortunately it had a few faults. Two bits were rattling around. One was a step, which just clipped back into the bogie - if it comes out again, I'll just use a small bit of Airfix glue. Then there is another bit of bogie detail (wish I could attach an image) - which is soooo small and fiddly. I think I know how to reattach it, but I'm gonna wait till morning, rather than try and get it done now. The final thing is that one of the four bogie chains has become detached from the body work. This also looks very fiddly. @Sam, if you see this, can you tell me the easiest way of sorting this? I saw that during the review you did remove the chains.
