I guarantee you, the the db reading was faulty, because this speaker is notorious for having too much port noise. If you don't know what port noise is, it is basically when the port is pushing air at such a high velocity, that you mostly hear air coming from it. Same is the case for all bass ports, not just this one. My point is, the Mic was mainly picking up the port noise, which is why the dbs were do high. If it was a proper db test, the Mic should've been 0.5 meters to 1 meter away from the port for the most accurate results. 150 dbs is about as loud, or louder than an jet taking off. That just isn't possible from a 3 inch speaker, no matter how many watts, and how well built it is. At least at this point in time. Maybe in the future.
@dfcw

@chuckySK81

Yes its true. Problem is when air speed in port reach MACH number,than you hear strange noise. There are many SW where this velocity and other parametres can by simulate before you make real box. That why i use so big ports on my HiFi sub. Is also reason to put 2 or 3 port etc....Also measure SPL in port is something stupid. SPL must be measure at 1m from box to make the measure relative to somebody other measurment. Also the sensitivity of speakers is measured from 1m at rate 1W and than you have some numbers like 87db. Is logarithmic taht means if you have 90db sensitivity is 2 time louder at same wats than 87db....Every 3 db is twice as loud. Whan you have sub with 90db sensitivity at 1000W you have twive as SPL that with 87db at 1000W or it also means that 90db sub at 500W have tha same SPL that 87db at 1000W.....Many people doesn´t know this....A im not native speaker/from EU/. No hate i like EXOs videos....Nice hobby

@MrAtrandom

It's not measuring the port noise. It's taking the high pressure that the port is producing. The number is high because the port is too small. Look up "port wars spl". He's not trying to measure the actual output of the driver, just the port pressure. There are people out there doing a 140dB at the dashboard but do 175dB in the port. Also, the 150dB of a jet taking off is a full frequency response and perceived as MUCH louder to the ear because it includes much higher frequencies.
@MrAtrandom
6 жыл бұрын
Every 3dB is considered either doubled electrical power or in this case, doubled acoustical power. Not twice as loud. A variance of 10dB is considered twice as loud.

port velocity doesn't directly correspond with SPL as a heads up... i mean, i know you know that, but using it to tell the output is a bit wrong. you could have a real high port tune with the sub having a lower fs, which would drop in port velocity while still having more low end.

130 dB is the noise level of a jet engine at 10m distance and also that of the siren of a transatlantic. From 130 dB it is considered that the pain threshold has been exceeded. 140 dB is the noise level of an airplane taking off. 150 dB is the noise level of a firecracker.
@MarkTillotson
6 жыл бұрын
"Noise level" meaning SPL or loudness? Its the same SPL, but 70Hz is extremely different in loudness from a full frequency signal like jet wash. The pain threshold at sub-bass frequencies is not in the ears, its in the torso, and its way higher that 130dB.
@rodillo
6 жыл бұрын
Mark Tillotson it is fuking impossible this speakers can play 150db. the max volume you can play in this speaker is arround 80-90 db. A normal person’s threshold of noise is around 125 dB. A full blast rock metal concert can go up to 130 dB, which is the same level as if you were standing right beside a full-running jet engine. At 135 dB, one can actually feel a slight cooling sensation in the air. At 140 dB, the throat and the vocal chords start to vibrate involuntarily. At 142 dB, even the chest starts to pound. Once it reaches 148 dB, the sound level becomes extremely uncomfortable and even painful. At 150 dB, one can feel a sensation similar to drowning. If it gets to 155 dB, even the body’s core starts to shake. Three notches later at 158, you can feel intense nausea because of the violent vibration. Eardrums will probably rupture at 190 dB. At 198 dB, the sound gets so intense that it can actually cause death.
@rodillo

It's not. 3 99db/1w JBL cinema 18s with a KW each of bridged Crown in 192 square feet only hit 125db or so at 40hz before running out of steam. No 3" sub on the market is better than 80db/1w at 45-50hz with a few watts of power handling to hit xmax or xmech depending on design. A 3" ported subwoofer exceeding 90db at 45hz doesn't exist yet. Maybe some horn loaded design optimized for a tight bandpass in that region. A 10db difference between levels represents 10x the acoustical energy in the higher output driver (3db difference is 2x the energy). 133db is about 20,000 times the energy output of the 90db this thing might achieve. Which makes sense, at best it can move 1/100th the air the JBLS can within xmax To put it in perspective, this thing claims more than 10x the sound pressure output of a 15" Peerless subwoofer that can sweep a 15" diameter disc 3.5" peak to peak. Putting the mic right next to it instead of 3 feet away helps a ton, but still not enough for these numbers.
