YES! The dynamics are different between spouses. A neutral instructor is the only way to go. Best quote: "it's not as scary, when you're the one doing it." THAT'S IT exactly. I had a fear of flying in a commercial airliner. I bought Microsoft FSX and learned to fly in simulation. Now that I know what's going on the the cockpit of a 737, I'm fine with flying commercially.

Take your wife to a flight simulator and learn the basics where she will feel safe and she can focus on flying. then do what these guys are doing. As you said at the end of the video that when you develop the confidence that you are in control the fear disappears. When I got my license in early 1970 then got married in late 1970 I wanted my wife to know that she too could fly and land an airplane by herself. She agree to take lessons and completed 3 or 4 solo flights. She did great and this was an airport with 1800 foot runway. She never got her license but she did fly and land an airplane by herself.

Thanks for this! My wife has already watched the companion video to this and enjoyed it. She's had 3 in-flight and 3 or 4 Sim lessons so far, in the months leading up to and now several weeks since I got my PPL. She's not nearly as nervous about flying "out of the gate" as Poppins here, but still gets nervous when actually trying to fly the plane (we rent Diamond DA20's for now, maybe DA40's soon) herself, and has some challenges reconciling sight-picture changes to corrective stick movements without overshooting. Her in-flight instructor has been great (he also teaches a 9yo boy, I've seen them work together and he's very patient). She no longer drives - bad car accident years ago resulting in TBI and a forced retirement, still experiencing some difficulties - so activities like this are good for her anyway, in terms of getting her out of the house and trying new things, re-learning how capable she still is and can be, nevermind the advantages around being able to take over for me if I need to work some issue or worse.

Great video! As others have mentioned, my wife had similar fears about flying that were only amplified with the addition of two little ones to our family. I'm a single engine CFI and while we had a single I was letting her fly as much as possible and logging her hours. She was almost able to land and she made a darn good autopilot when I needed to look for something or needed to write something down. When we bought the 310 her fears came back due to the increased complexity. On an unofficial basis (I am not a MEI) I figured I'd show her that everything she learned in the single was applicable to twin flying except there are another set of engine controls. So far she might be better flying the twin and has about 2 almost landings on video. She is a much less nervous flyer now and I feel less stressed knowing that she could be talked down and at least crash land on the runway with everyone surviving if I was incapacitated.

Every day that goes by without part 2 of this being up is a sad day! Also, a number of people have said it, but it can't be over-emphasized enough... learning to do radio work, doing takeoffs, doing a bit of hand flying (autopilot makes it not necessary, but it's still FUN), and even just putting your hands on the yoke and "feeling" Eric do landings, ALL of these things are super helpful. I noticed Jason had you on the yoke for one of his landings in this video, too! Ask Eric to let you do it whenever he can. I've been subbed for a long time to 310Pilot (Jaime and Kevin are both ATC controllers, so she's a natural on the radios), and Baron Pilot (Kim does takeoffs and radios all the time, and is about to start her full flight training), so those are two good channels to see couples where the partner is very involved in cockpit operations even though they aren't pilots themselves (yet, in Kim's case LOL), if you want some inspiration!

I'm a fan of your videos, so thank you for doing them and thank you for being transparent. My uncle introduced me to flying. He had a plane prior to getting married and his wife felt the same way your wife seems to, so she never joined him and they were both ok with that. My wife knew flying was my dream and in the same manner gave me the OK, but she didn't want anything to do with it. As I got more serious with passing my written and planning for it, I realized that my wife was quietly stressed out as I got closer to making flying a reality. The first thing I did was to get my life insurance in place. Long story short, due to several reasons I decided to not fulfill my dream. The primary reason was that it wasn't worth putting my family through such stress every time I went up. I chose to marry her and I am good with deciding not to fly because in the end she is my best friend and I can't live with the knowledge that I am causing her to worry so much about me. Everyone has their own story, this is just mine.

That was so impressive. This video made me smile at the end. My father was in the military and we flew around all the time, then one day I became so scared of flying that it ended up consuming my life as I had to drive anywhere and going international was no longer an option. Then 9/11 happened and the fear solidified. I did not fly for over 20 years, but then I made a friend in Camarillo who owned a plane and he offered to take me around the pattern to see how it felt. This ended up getting me to take flying lessons and I have been flying ever since. International/Local/Regional/Whatever. When you learn to fly a plane and actually know what is going on it really frees you. This is awesome. Keep it up. Get your PPL :)

This is a great pinch hitter video! The Commentary that Poppins adds to the video definitely made this video even better. So very proud of you to be able to not only face your fear but to be able to put it aside and take control of the situation. I feel this would be aspiring to all those out there that do experience the anxiety of flying with their spouse. I’ve always wondered if part of the anxiety is from not understanding how a plane works and what it takes to make her fly. Congratulations on achieving so much in a short period of time, you are doing really well! Maybe even better than some of those other student pilots. Have fun flying! Blue skies

Jenny did so well flying! I hope this helped her feel more comfortable and maybe even get interested in piloting herself. Amazing job!

Ok. So totally got teary eyed during this. This is great! I’m not a pilot… yet. A friend who is 94, has been teaching me for 6 years. Seems like a long time. And yes. It is. But I’m just enjoying the learning part. Financial part just doesn’t make sense because I often thing too logical. Congrats for a great job and using those opportunities you have to experience new amazing things! Some day I might get off the ground ;)

These Anxious types... Soon, you are going to go to your hanger and find out the plane is gone! and find out the wife took two redheads shopping. Now seriously, very cool and important episode. and the instructor is ACE.

Great Great Great Video!! Poppins did awesome! I'm going to show this and Jason's video to my wife. She just went up with me for the first time last month! I think this is a critical skill that needs to be developed in the case something tragic happens to keep it from an even bigger tragedy! GREAT JOB! You are right, it's not scary once you understand it. Or at least its not as scary!

You’ve got a follower for life. At least you have had the experiences to actually control the aircraft. Amazing job!!! Cannot wait for the second part of this amazing adventure! Clear Skies and Safe Landings!!! (You should get your PPL now... 🤨)

Damn it Eric! I don't know if it's the background songs but the moment she takes off and realizes she can overcome fear, I teared up with joy going.." yeah!".. in the living room and my wife walks in to see me crying with joy. Embarrassing, she jokingly said 😂😂. Inspiring, thanks, made my weekend

I've been watching both you and Jason's channel for some time (honestly spend more time on TFP simply because one is always learning)) and this have been an amazing pair of videos. Congratulations to you Poppins for taking this on, and you guys could not have found a better instructor, Jason's in a league all his own. Really looking forward to Part II.

This is fantastic on so many levels! I’ve been a huge fan of “Stick and Rudder” for many years and have given numerous copies away to fellow pilots! It is also an amazing accomplishment to tackle something like this that obviously causes much anxiety and stay with it until it is mastered. My hat is off to all of you for tackling this endeavor!! I am looking forward to Part 2!!
