I feel like procrastination is just the result, it’s not what we need to deal with. Instead, what we need to fix is the reason WHY we procrastinate. Just like you don’t want to fix your insomnia, you want to fix your anxiety(that causes your insomnia)! You have to ask yourself layers of questions to know the root causes. And then you can finally come up with/use specific methods to release them!

A little over a week ago I watched your video where you recommended the Artist's Way book. After reading it and starting the tasks, in addition to some other stuff, I have noticed my anxiety not having such a grip on my day. My struggle for a long time has been fear, and lately, the fear of the fear itself has taken its toll. Something the author talks about is also allowing yourself to be led. Somehow I ended up watching this video in the exact moment I needed it - hearing you say the thing about how staying in the fear is scarier than doing the thing you're afraid of gave me tears of hope! If you read this, thank you so much Ingrid!

Often, I also take baby steps, but really tiny baby steps. As in, ok next I’ll get up, next I’ll open the door, etc. etc. because sometimes I get so overwhelmed with anxiety that I freeze and don’t even know what to do. So if I can just focus on the next couple of seconds even, that helps me because eventually I’ll reach the point I was afraid of and it won’t seem so far away and daunting anymore since I did all this other stuff to get there. I know it might seem like a no brainer to most people “just get up” and “just do it”, but when your mind is in chaos, being logical is very difficult.

This spoke to my soul and I’m 33! For me, procrastinating comes from fear. Working very very hard on it. A year ago finally left the job I hated and went back to school. Great video and thoughtful topic as always. For me, procrastination has always been about fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear that i'm not capable of the thing I'm trying to do. Fear I'm inadequate. Fear that I won't be able to handle whats on the other side, or I don't deserve it. I know this is not the case for all, but for me, it is. I also noticed that procrastinating has a snowball effect - I start procrastinating on the big life projects, and then soon I am procrastinating the little things too - even the tiniest thing like sending a text, or putting away laundry, or moving something from one room to another. When I felt like this was getting out of hand, I put myself on a "procrastination challenge" where I made a huge list of every single thing i'm procrastinating on - big and small. And for 30 days I made myself do just one thing every single day. After the month was over, my sense of strength and self worth had increased exponentially. I got into the habit of DOING and living in the zone of discomfort and growth. It changed my life. Now I do 2-3 things from my list almost every day, and it's not nearly as scary as it used to be.

I love this Ingrid! I saw someone else request this in another one of your comments section and I thought it was interesting. The request was, "How to accept and not seek approval from parents or family members." You've shared you only have a close relationship with certain family members. With one particular family member my relationship has been very rocky and tumultuous. How do you come to accept that not every relationship with your family is perfect? To me, this expands beyond friendship in the sense that you choose your friends. You can't choose your family, and there is this pressure sometimes to make it work, but in reality, the relationship isn't good for your own well being. How do you come to accept that? Thank you, Ingrid! Watching your videos for years and I love seeing your maturity and wisdom shine through each video!

I think some of my procrastination comes from lack of setting intentions for the day, not estimating my time properly, and not including tasks or time for myself to do things I want to do. Also I found it has helped me to remember to not be so hard on myself if I don’t get everything done that I wanted to. I think mindfulness has also helped by not letting thoughts of fear and failure not get in the way from the present moment. It makes the days clearer.

100% relate to this. I "prcrastinate" (I hate that word actually) all the time. Literally about everything...things that I know if I don't do now will be worse off later....like not paying parking fines or bills to little things like not sending a quick email or not going to the gym. Then I get to a day where I try to get all those things done and I obviously cannot because it's a mountain so then I feel worse and end up procrastinating more. It is a never ending horrible cycle and sometimes I feel very alone in it and people are just confused as to why I wouldn't just do this easy task. I am working on solutions but I do not feel i have found one that works for me quite yet so thanks for this video !

One way I have procrastinated in my life in the last few years is also in avoiding regular doctors visits. At first I began avoiding going to the doctors because I didn't have insurance or a lot of money, and it didn't feel wise to rack up any possible debt when there was no pressing need to go the doctor. But then I did get insurance and a better job, and I started feeling anxious about using the insurance I had because of the fear of the doctor telling me something I didn't want to hear about my health after being out of the loop so long. I have been so proud of myself in the last few months that I have had a physical, three dentist visits to straighten out some dental issues, and an eye appt to get an updated glasses/contacts prescription. At some point, burying my head in the sand started to feel scarier than just confronting any possible issues.

*i’m a peace corps volunteer currently residing in a rural area of west africa my counselor told me that whenever i feel stuck, i should start by doing one small thing, like sweeping my house (i live in a one room hut) or fetching water from the communal pump. then i can move onto another small task. then another. and before i know it i’ve accomplished everything that i set out to do. it’s become an invaluable tool that i’ve leaned on when struggling during my peace corps service and i know it is a lesson that i will carry with me for years to come.

I find myself going down spirals of negative, hopeless thoughts that my anxiety builds on because a lot of those fears are realities (such as housing crisis, low wages, high education fees, climate change, etc etc). I find that the main reason why we have a hard time doing the «adult things » is for two reasons: anxiety and the need to do more and more faster. Anxiety: like you said, we have so much more information now and it gets our brain in a constant state of stress and stimulation and advertisement know that they use that to keep us alert and focused on what they wanna sell... but at the end of the day, it only make us more mentally tired and anxious for no apparent reason. We also have so muuuch more pressure to succeed and more eyes on us than ever before... we are constantly taking to someone, we need to be reachable all the time, we need to be perfect like we see in the media. That’s what we are thought from a young age... compare to how my mother was raised, it’s just crazy insane the amount of pressure that we have that she didn’t... I’m not saying they were stress free I’m just saying that having the world open up to us through media and the internet is a magical thing but also is not easy to get a hang of and use in a balanced way. We will get there but we have fallen victim to the trap of every new invention: doing it too much or using it too much. Having to do more and more: The other thing is what I discovered recently. Why was I too lazy to do the laundry or the dishes? I wasn’t. I was willing to work none stop on other things that made me feel like I was accomplishing something. But the damn dishes? There is no shortcut... the laundry either.. you just have to do it and it takes a bit of time. But I realized that these task were annoying to me because I wanted to do them more efficiently and quicker! But they couldn’t be done like that... I wasn’t appreciating the time I took to clean my space. I was watching a documentary on animal (planet earth II) and saw the bower bird. A bird who spends literally half his day cleaning his space and making it pretty for his female. He doesn’t do it to do it quickly, he does it and appreciate doing it (you know what I mean). I thought, maybe we are not supposed to do it too quickly. Maybe we are supposed to actually appreciate the cleaning of our space. I realized that it actually made me more relaxed when I took the time to clean instead of seeing it like a shore, I now see it as a moment of self love just like taking care of myself, my body, my hair... my space is a part of me. Me life and how I take care of everything is a part of me. I want to try to stop thinking of doing more and more in less time but instead, doing what needs to be done for my life to be balanced and enjoy doing it, even if it takes time.

I find I procrasitnate the most when I know the end result is not going to be exactly what I wanted. Example I'm dealing with now: we moved starting a month ago, we had been looking for a place for a couple months before that and had found a BEAUTIFUL apartment that ticked all the must have boxes (closer to fiancee's new job, a separate room for an office/sewing room/beauty room for me, space for her desk, bigger kitchen, washer and dryer in unit, storage space, outdoor space, cat friendly) AND all my would loves (dining room, high ceilings, 2 floors, bigger master bedroom, fireplaces in all the rooms, historic - built 1850s, tons of big windows, hardwood floors). At that point after putting in the application I immediately started packing and cleaning the old place and then we lost that apartment in the cruelest way (realtor ghosted us and we saw it was taken down from the website we had been looking for places on - she still has never returned a call or email). I found another place a couple weeks after that hit the requirements and has 2 floors, a dining room, more windows than the old place (but no where near as many as perfect place), hardwood floors; but it is much smaller (and more expensive) than dream place, in not as desireable a location. And I've now been struggling to unpack at all (and took almost a month to pack things up and get them out of the old place). This place is not my style, doesnt feel like home or a place I could stay in for very long so its been hard to get settled into it. Whereas when we moved into the old place (as imperfect as it was it was great for the budget we had at the time and reminded me of the cabins/lodges at the camps I've worked at), I had everything unpacked and settled in within a week or two - and the second week was mostly looking for and buying pieces we didnt have and realized we needed - like another set of curtain rods for the bedroom. I know this place might feel more like home with the boxes gone, I just cant see it enough to do it.
