This video was a feast for me. I guess it is an irrefutable proof of true passion for a hobby as well as self-knowledge (both very useful traits) when you not only know what you like, but also what else came close to it without quite working out the way you expected .... how incidental one’s joys can be. What fun you can have discovering and savouring them .... I think I could say I understand my hobby better now, and the disappointments are at par for the course after all ☺️

Thank you! I'm glad I've discovered this community of fountain pen users on KZitem. It's nice to have access to people who enjoy discussing the intricate details of pen and ink.

This is a really useful video. I’ve thought about getting several of the pens on this list and it’s so helpful to hear your explanations of why you *don’t* use them, and what you do use instead. It’s especially useful for the grail pens and good to know the drawbacks you’ve noticed after getting over the initial honeymoon! Thank you.

Pilot Elite 95S is my favourite fountain pen. I own Montblanc 149, Visconti Homo Sapiens, Sailor King Pro Gear, Waterman Edson, Nakaya and other pens many people consider their grail pens. Pilot Elite is better, more practical pen than any of these. It’s very light but sturdy, no need to baby it.

The Prera is my daily user. Love that pen. always in my Hobonichi Techo and with me everyday. Great little pen and works for me. And like you said I don't feel a need to buy another pen lol

The only reason I have bought any pens since the Prera is that I've been lured by their beauty. 🤩 The Prera fine nib writes as good as (or better than) any pen in my collection.

I love Preras, I have one with medium nib and one with a 1.0 stub nib and they are very smooth and pleasant to write with, but the one that I bought with a fine nib came with misaligned tynes that I didn't manage to fix .... so now it sits in a drawer. ... :-(

I just discovered your videos. I like your voice and your perspective on pens and inks. I especially liked your expression “grail pen” ! I know what you mean!

Nice video Cathy ! It's a pity that these pens didn't make it to the final list but I guess this happens to all of us, we change habits and likes. I love my TWSBIs and Preras too but just like you I reach for other pens nowadays.

The E95S has always been a pen I have loved the look, but I can’t stand fine nibs. So when I order Japanese pens I order broad. The E95S only comes in fine and medium, but I love the look of that pen.

I have two of these the twsbi mini and the pilot prera- in EF and F, respectively and I love them both! Interesting note about the e95s getting ink on your fingers if you touch that section. That pen has caught my eye before but that info would actually dissuade me. I have a really low grip. It would probably be a disaster for me! Nice video! Thanks!

How does the TWSBI EF compare to the Prera F? I debated between the F and EF TWSBI. And regarding the E95S, it's a wonderful pen but the grip section is something to consider.

@@gadgetstop321 I find that they are actually very comparable. The TWSBI EF is not as fine as I have experienced with Pilot EFs. Also, I have found that TWSBI EFs can be kind of inconsistent (I have two Ecos in EF and they are both different from each other and from the mini haha), so it's hard to say. I do love both of them, though!

Thank you Kathy. I also had an issue with Sailor 1911 S Clear Demonstrator 14K Nib and two Pro Gear Slim (F 14K Nib) that tended to pick up paper slivers and needed to be constantly flushed especially with cheaper paper and Rhodia pads.

I was wondering if it was just my particular pen, but I guess it's a characteristic of Sailor fine nibs.

Most ink names give a good clue to their colour. I didn't know what to expect with "Sherlock Holmes"! Maybe they will bring out a "Dr Watson" to accompany the greatest of detectives (apart from Columbo, of course).

DeAtramentis also made an Arthur Conan Doyle ink (Oriental red) that I was tempted to get. I wonder what color Watson's ink would be?

I think that pilot e95s is just beautiful. Forgive me if I misunderstood but you mentioned that pen as a Grill Pen. What does that mean? Thanks.

Good question! I should have been more clear. I referred to some of the pens as "Grail" pens, meaning that I dreamed of getting those particular pens for a while before I was able to get them.

I am SO glad this video came across my feed! You answered several questions I had and even a few I had not thought of. I’m just barely starting a collection myself and am wondering what is next. Curiously I’ve been a fountain pen user all my life ever since finding an old Pilot in my grandfather’s stuff, but I never thought to collect them. Now, I’m realizing that the world of fountain pens is alive and thriving and it’s such a thrill to learn all about them. Thanks again for all the useful info! I just retired from 30 years of teaching. I hope you enjoy the career as much as I have.

Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your insight. It is funny that your list of "don't go to" pens is almost the same as my "go to" pens. Interesting.
