We are pleased to welcome you to the Alternative to Meds Center podcast. Today, we are interviewing Angela Peacock, whom viewers may know from Medicating Normal as well as Angela Peacock Consulting.
Angela came to the world of medication tapering and activism, like many others - after the negative impacts of harmful prescription medications. She initially attempted a “cold-turkey” session as advised by her doctors, a horrifying experience that was documented in the 2020 documentary film Medicating Normal, an expose regarding profit-driven medicine. After an eventual safe taper - and hundreds of conversations with people who have had similar experiences - Angela was inspired to help others. She determined that the best way to do that was to work one-on-one with people who want to safely taper away from the medications that are endangering them.
Angela describes how many of these individuals are sick solely because of their medication load. Unfortunately, they become sicker when they can no longer tolerate the associated side effects and decide they want to stop using them. Thus, the vicious cycle begins.
Angela has a heart for people at any stage of ceasing medication use, as well as their caregivers and children. People in these situations need and deserve love and healing, especially after being harmed by the very medical systems that were put into place to treat them. She firmly believes that programs like Alternative to Meds Center, along with healing coaches like herself, can truly make a difference in the lives of those hurt by prescription medication toxicity.
Both Debbie and Angela want to reiterate that there is hope, even in the depths of mental health symptoms or medication injury. In fact, Angela witnesses breakthroughs and success stories every single day as people find themselves once again. By addressing the whole person, including diet and activity levels, as well as all the reasons they want or need to stop taking their medications, it is possible to help them become advocates for their own needs. Then, she helps them implement coping mechanisms, establishing an open dialogue to help them explore their fears and showing them love, understanding, and compassion. These simple things can help people feel empowered in their own tapering process so they can live a life outside of the medical system and the medications it pushes.
If you’re interested in whether addressing your medication intake is for you, Angela encourages you to read the warning label on all your medications, avoid dangerous “cold-turkey” detoxes at all costs, research safe tapering strategies, and ensure your lifestyle (diet, activity levels, coping skills, and community) are well in place to begin a lengthy tapering and healing process. Then, ask your provider what they know about withdrawal and tapering for the medications you are taking - and go elsewhere if they suggest going it “cold-turkey.” Finally, she advises preparing yourself to continue the healing process for the rest of your life - a journey that is manageable by taking it one day or one chunk at a time.
Angela is grateful for places like ATMC that help patients taper on their own terms and allow them to make decisions regarding their medication load. Debbie applauds her work to help people from all walks of life leave their harmful medications in the past. For more information about tapering, contact Alternative to Meds Center at (888) 984-9667.
