Members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and the Historic Burke Foundation, Inc., reenacted the crossing of the Catawba River at Greenlee Ford in Morganton, NC, in 1780. The crossing commemorated the 235th anniversary of the crossing made by some 1,400 Overmountain Men who forded the river on horseback and foot Oct. 1, 1780, to pursue British Major Patrick Ferguson. The Overmountain Men marched on to defeat Ferguson at Kings Mountain. The victory was a turning point in the American Revolution leading to the ultimate victory for American Independence.
