We started out with very little experience, trying to learn as we go. The goal is to sail around the world, but we don't have enough skill at this point. We are just trying to make sure that we learn enough to the next place we drop anchor. If we keep doing that we will gain the skills we need :-)

We LOVED the Sea of Cortez. We cruised as a couple, tens of thousands of miles on our 46’ mono. This area of the world is a great one, among our favorites. A couple of tips. One, I know that you just bought that OB motor. But to others and next time for you. Get a 2 stroke! For this application they are soooooo superior. MUCH lighter, simpler, more dependable, easier to work on. The only negative is that they do burn more fuel. A very popular brand world wide is Enduro, the international / commercial model of Yamaha. Those 4 strokes are just too heave for dingy use. They should be readily available in Mexico. A minor point you might already know. When you ease out a line on a winch, to keep better control and avoid wraps put one hand around the line on the winch, sort of like the brake drum on a car, and keep just enough pressure to control the line going out, but do keep ahold of it with the other too. ( sorry, Im a US Sailing cruising instructor, many of my students now out cruising the world). And do NOT toss out a Bonita. Great eating fish if you do it right. They are very bloody and so can have a strong flavor. The trick is right after you catch the fish. Tie a line on the base of his tail, then cut off his head and hang him over the side to drain. Just above the water. ( but not so close something might grab a free meal). Let it drain till it seems pretty much drained. Then filet and when ready to cook, cut into bite size ( 1/2-1” pieces. Now sauté in butter, garlic and spices to taste. Wow. Yummy. Try it. Happy cruising. I will subscribe. Capt . Fred

We will look into a 2 stroke for when this motor dies, we do hope it lasts a bit though haha, its about 125lbs so i can't lift it, but Darcy seems to be able to, And he built the davits to take a lot of pounds. Thanks for the tip on the winch, We are hopping to get the chance to practice a bunch in the spot we are in now. Its got good wind and really flat water, so any other tips would be great! We were told that Bonita tasted really fishy, if we start running low on fish we will give it a shot, or if we are with other sailors who like to eat them. Thanks for all the help Captain Fred! :-)

A safety rope does 2 things - Allows you to secure the engine to the dingy & it gives you an additional rope to help lower it onto the transom. Also - you might consider splicing a "net" to go over the engine to allow you to use a halyard to help move the engine....

Love the videos. The trick I use with raising the main sail is that only to boom has to point into the wind, not the whole boat. So you can go on a close reach and even a bit further and release the main sheet far enough. You can then raise, lower and reef the main easily, just make sure the main sail is flapping.

Your enthusiasm and give it a go attitude is what makes this channel so watchable for me. I like that you vlogs are up to date and we're not waiting 3 months to see it. I do worry about your boat though. All thru hulls below the waterline should have a seacock and a vented loop to prevent flooding. it would be better if your bilge pumps discharged above the waterline which would avoid the syphoning you're experiencing
@sailing.supernova

Thanks heaps for the kind words, being 100% in real time can have its down sides but like you we wouldn't have it any other way. We are about to address the thru hall, There will be a temp fix until we pull the boat out of the water and move the thru hull. I thought we had some 1 1/8" vented loops on board but i can't find them... I guess we just have to do a big week of boat jobs and they will turn up. We also have a back up pump in place just in case. Hope this will take away your worry :-)
