I think many 700elo would have the skills to be higher rated, but probably play too fast in most games, blundering and finishing with most of their time untouched. But then because Eric is playing slow, they get into a mindset of playing slower as well, and end up playing way above their rating thanks to that.

@RK-qi4tv

Zwischenzug/intermezzo is different than zugzwang. The former means ''in between move'', while the latter is something like ''out of moves'', suggesting a position in which passing the turn would be preferable because playing any move would disrupt the defence and result in a significant disadvantage. It frequently occurs in endgames, especially those involving only king/pawns and triangulation.

Next game was with a 762 player (an accident to play someone so high... settings weren't correct). Voila! It wasn't close to being as clean as your play (quite messy, actually), but I won with checkmate. I instantly went up to 457. Just luck? Not totally. My experience is they see that a piece can be taken and they take it. It wasn't until I reached like 1100+ they started considering other moves. They are also very queen focused and will hang checkmates to save their queen or they'll hang checkmate to capture my queen lol. Though who knows. Maybe those few actually did some research. Maybe they understand that taking isn't always the best, they studied some principles, but they don't have the gameplay experience yet so they fall to other things. I was weak to end games so my rank stayed low until I worked on that.

On the question of how to pronounce Zwischenzug in German: It would be more like the English pronunciation of "tsvishentsoog" (tsvish - en - tsoog). You were already quite close, the main differences are that in German, the "z" consonant is pronounced "ts" (or like the tz you sometimes have at the end of US surnames). And a more subtle point: German W is not voiced like the English variant, but unvoiced, more like English V. But I should also add that, since you're using the word in an English context, the English pronunciation you chose is actually completely fine :)
