Thank you for acknowledging the existence of trees. So many lawn care channels seem to assume that everyone's yard gets 16 hours of sun every day. I generally start overseeding as soon as I think we've had the last snow. The seed will lay dormant until temps rise high enough to germinate, and it can get the most light possible until the trees start to fill in.

The biggest challenge for me is that I have a large 60k sq ft lawn. I can't overseed all at once like I tried one year because it was almost a total disaster. Got in over my head, wasn't using the right equipment but luckily I was able to return most of the seed I purchased. So I have to overseed 8-10k sq ft at a time per year for good sprinkler coverage and so it doesn't run my well dry, although that has never been an issue. I did 16k sq ft one year and that was pushing it. Plus I nearly lost my sanity. To do it right for a lawn that big would require some bigger toys and more help. And I dont like asking for help especially when it comes to a lawn. Like to keep it on a budget with small inexpensive lawn toys and maybe some innovation.

If your lawn was mine, for annual maintenance and especially for overseeding (apply right over the seed) I would use our "Optimize"(Soil Optimizer). We live in arid Montana, hot in summer on rocky soil. My husband loves a green lawn - about an acre of it on a gently rolling hillside. He waters everyday for 20 minutes per section beginning at 3 in the morning until 8 a.m. It's greener in low-lying shady areas, but much of it looks dead. He also has a guy come 4 X a summer who fertilizes and sprays for weeds. Would love your thoughts on: 1. Will the grass suffer if we water less? 2. Is the fertilizing helping or hurting? 3. Would mulching our leaves in the fall and spreading a light layer over the grass begin to feed the soil and help the grass thrive?
@JohnandBobs
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl, Determining the water needs of turf from afar is difficult because of the variabilities in soil, climate and turf type. My guess is your husband is watering that amount because he has monitored the situation over the years and determined the lawn is not viable if watered less. Turf is a high water user, especially with the soil you're describing the lawn is unable to root deeply so it needs very frequent water. Chemical fertilizer is good for lawn but it doesn't improve the soil at all. I prefer soil building fertilizer that feeds the soil and the grass at the same time, which addresses the soil's ability to sustain the lawn without constant feeding and watering. Your mulching idea is a good one. Thank you for your interest! John&Bob's

What are your thoughts on dethatching or aerating the lawn before overseeding?
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
That is precisely the proper timing for aerating/dethatching. Interestingly, if you adopt a lawn care regimen as I outlined in the video of building lively soil and avoiding chemical inputs, no dethatching or aeration will be needed in the future because the beneficial soil microbes will break down and consume dead and decaying turf matter, which normally forms thatch.
@hwy6163

I always do it annually. Along with regular feeding every 6 weeks. I also never bag up my grass when I mow. Most people don’t know the grass clippings are good for your lawn. I have neighbors that just water heavily thinking grass only needs water to look good. My grass is very healthy and green. They hate me. I just smile.
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, leaving the grass clippings is great for your lawn if you have a "mulching" mower. Most current rotary mowers have the mulching capability. The only time it isn't a good idea to leave the clippings is if you fertilize heavily with synthetic fertilizer and lots of clippings are produced. Leaving the clippings after heavy growth can cause burning and fungal issues. You appear to have a good formula for success.

What is the best way to get rid of white clover? Also I live in the northeast and my yard gets no shade. What is the best way to keep a green yard? Also should we dethatch prior to overseeding?
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
Clover usually thrives in lawn that is nutrient deficient. Feed the lawn and your soil generously with our Nourish-Biosol at about 12-15lbs per 1,000 and see if you can get your lawn to outperform the clover. If you can accept the look, clover in lawn is not a terrible thing. After trying to boost your lawn to overwhelm the clover, if you just can't stand the clover, search online "SpeedZone Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf". You can spot spray the clover with SpeedZone in Spring or fall. Be judicious with it, it's not good for your soil.

I applied Maximize and Blend to my St. Augustine summer ‘23. I’m trying this because my lawn service diagnosed a fungus. I lost my previous yard. It’s worked very well. I’m not sure what I should now follow with and when to apply it. My dormant St. Augustine in places I didn’t overseed looks sick. Puzzling. Was there anything applied to the lawn within 3 months of your renovation effort? What did you use for top dressing and how thick was it applied. What kind of fertilizer did you use and did you use anything other than fertilizer and top dress over or under the seed. Is the seed setting on any soil at all or just on roots and debris? Is white clover good to mix with seed for long term natural nitrogen?
@JohnandBobs

Clover is good for a lawn in terms of nitrogen fixing. If you are trying to grow a lawn with the goal of ultimately being self sustaining requiring a minimum of supplemental inputs, clover is a good inclusion. The problem is many hate the way it looks and are constantly asking me how to get rid of it. It can look a little weedy. If you like or don't mind it's appearance, then it's great. If you don't like the way it looks (important reason for a lawn)- not so good.

Over the seed apply our Blend at 20-25lbs per 1,000sq ft and then 1/16 to 1/8" thick Amend or equal over everything. Then keep the top moist when the sun is out - should work great. My favorite approach is not to remove them, but rather to mow the lawn very low and then seed right over their dead carcasses at the right time seasonally when you will get fast germination. Also, with crabgrass, killing it isn't even necessary. Wait for it to go dormant in the Winter, then between December 15 and Jan 15 in the Western U.S., apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as granular Dimension, causing the crabgrass to essentially be dead and not re-sprout in the Spring/Summer. No removal necessary at all.

It depends on how thick you apply it. You'll need about 1cubic yd or 27cubic ft to cover 3,000sqft at 3/16" thick, which is about right. Depending on the product you buy each bale or bag is usually expressed in cubic ft. Some are 1 cubic foot in size, which would mean you'd need about 27 bales. Or you could buy a bulk wood based compost or humus from a landscape supplier and have them deliver 1cu yd to you in a bulk pile.

Hi perfect timing. Last summer I laid a new gas line and a new waterline. Two different areas of lawn. I stirred up some kind of animals, moles or voles. I haven't seen them but they have dug mounds and raised mud trails about 4 feet on either side of trenches dug for lines. I reseeded, grass grew for about 4 weeks and ever since the critters have been digging. Their entrances are about 2 to 3 inches round. Perfect size to have heel of shoe go in and break a leg. I fill with gravel, couple days later new hole. If they are what I've caught glimpses of they look like a mouse. Not a mouse. They are now starting to move around, eating roots of grass. Any tips? Should I just grow creeping charlie? They leave that alone. Thank you.

Best solutions are to do corrective thinning pruning to maximize light to the area or remove plantings, if appropriate. Aerify the soil by removing the moss, then ripping or tilling the area to improve the exchange of air and water. Then use our John&Bob's Blend and Penetrate Liquid Biotiller to infuse the soil with beneficial soil life. Then plant preferred turf and continue ongoing applications of our products to continually build soil life and avoid stagnation that resulted in the moss domination.

@JohnandBobs
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're considering overseeding with Bermuda or with a cool season grass? Probably not the proper timing for either. If you want a Bermuda lawn and it has a serious weed issue, consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide like Dimension right now. The Bermuda will be re-greening soon. Frequent and low mowing, plus the pre-emergent and a boost from our Nourish Biosol will provide a great Bermuda lawn. Overseeding of any kind won't be advisable for ,at least, 2 months from date of the pre-emergent application. Overseeding with Bermuda isn't advisable until after April 1 because it isn't warm enough for proper germination. If you had a cool season grass like fescue, then overseeding now or soon would make more sense.

You can’t overseed St Augustine... The seeds are sterile... St Augustine spreads via Stolons, so plugs are used...
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
@@morgankaufman2679 You are correct. Same applies to some varieties of Bermuda. If the St Augustine (or Bermuda) is very thin and you want to do a quick garden spruce up, you can overseed St Augustine with perennial rye seed. However, with St Augustine you would not prepare the site by mowing the lawn low because that will damage the St Augustine.
@morgankaufman2679
3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnandBobs seeding St Aug with perennial rye grass is very bad advice... St Augustine is an alpha grass that would completely take over any amount of Rye that would even germinate... I think it’s best to give people proper advice and not have them waste time and money on seed that won’t benefit their grass type at all... Plugs or Sod are the only options for St Augustine... I also live in Minnesota, maintain a cool season lawn, am not a professional and even I know this... Fertilize (when you’re not in a blackout period), water properly, and mow twice a week will do wonders for Diana’s lawn vs overseeding rye into St Aug...
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
@@morgankaufman2679 You are right, what we want is for the St Augustine to take over the perennial rye. In many cases, particularly with St Augustine and Bermuda the perennial rye is meant to be temporary. You are also correct that perennial rye won't germinate in a dense healthy St Augustine lawn. The situation I was describing is if it's thin and maybe close to being dormant and you're looking for a quick, lush green up, then perennial rye will work. We have quickly greened up several St Augustine lawns with that approach. The proper patient, long term approach is as you describe, although the two approaches aren't mutually exclusive ---- both could work simultaneously if you're starting with a weak St Augustine lawn you can overseed and then plug St Augustine over time while feeding your soil and your plugs. Eventually the result will be a strong, dense St Augustine turf that it doesn't make sense to overseed as you properly described.

Why overseed in spring when every expert says that fall is the time. Pre-emergent is supposed to go down in the spring to combat weeds and crabgrass.
@JohnandBobs
3 жыл бұрын
Fall is a good time to overseed in many parts of the country, but Spring is also excellent. Hopefully, your turf condition and care is such that a pre-emergent is not needed (it's better for your soil). If it is needed, I find that the timing of pre-emergent is critical and in my experience Spring is too late. If the timing is after some warming has occurred, the weeds have already reached a point in their germination beyond which the pre-emergent can be most effective. I like to apply pre-emergent very early, actually in the Winter. However, you do have a point to consider. If the pre-emergent is used in early Spring, then Spring seeding will not work because the pre-emergent will keep the lawn seed from germinating properly. If no pre-emergent was used or if it was used in the Winter (I apply about Dec 10), then Spring overseeding will work great and provide quite a boon to your lawn's Summer appearance.

Most powerful deterrent to weeds is to make your lawn as healthy and strong as possible with proper nutrition, mowing, watering and possible overseeding. A vibrant lawn with regular mowing (most weeds can't tolerate frequent mowing) will out compete weeds. When lawn is weakened for any reason, weeds infiltrate quickly and aggressively. Skunks take care of my grubs and rabbits leave great high nitrogen fertilizer pellets around, they eat my weeds too. The rabbit droppings also have clover seeds that help poor soil. Poor soil is the cause of weeds so clover helps. I throw my grass seed in the late autumn so the frost buries them in the resulting cracks for spring. Pull weeds by hand, don't dig or you'll cause many more than you'll dig. This is a natural lawn. I only use a watering can on trouble spots, no sprinklers. We prefer to build complex life in your soil so that your soil has a self sustaining mechanism to prevent and defeat grubs. We don't recommend products like Grubx which damage soil life, because soil life is our best prospect for permanent long term control. Beneficial nematodes will eat grubs before they become a problem and beneficial nematodes occur naturally in soil that has been fortified with products like our Optimize, Maximize and Nourish-Biosol and/or also with inputs like kelp, earth worm castings and good quality compost. You can also purchase beneficial nematodes online from Arbico Organics. The best way to treat your soil for grubs in a way that doesn't damage soil life is with an organic beneficial bacteria called Bt, which is short for Bacillus thuringiensis. You can buy it online also from Arbico and places like that. There is more than one Bt available - Bt galleriae is specifically for grubs.
